About Jianyang Culture and Art Center Art Center

Jianyang Culture and Art Center is a cultural and art complex in Chengdu covering 48200 square meters. The overall concept is based on green, sports and culture, and a vitality ring connects the separate buildings of the different plots. The grand theater stands at the end of the vitality ring. The theater interior takes dancing ribbons as its design language, creating a smooth and dynamic atmosphere that echoes the flowing architectural form. Warm bamboo and wood veneer and marble with natural texture balance the space in a simple way.

Within the evolving discourse of contemporary cultural architecture, Jianyang Culture and Art Center by Jian Wang emerges as a compelling meditation on the dialogue between organic naturalism and geometric precision, suggesting affinities with the fluid formal vocabularies pioneered by visionary architects who sought to dissolve the boundaries between building and landscape, structure and sculpture. The work appears to engage with longstanding architectural questions concerning the relationship between human bodies and built space, proposing an environment where curvilinear surfaces seem to embrace inhabitants rather than merely contain them. The designer demonstrates remarkable technical facility in orchestrating the complex intersection of multiple formal systems: the biomorphic wooden volumes with their striated surfaces evoke natural phenomena—perhaps terraced hillsides, flowing water, or geological strata—while the crystalline white ceiling plane and geometric lattice screens ground these organic gestures within traditions of rational construction. This productive tension between nature and geometry, between warm craft traditions and cool technological precision, generates much of the work's visual and conceptual richness. The chromatic strategy reveals sophisticated understanding of spatial perception, employing warm wood tones to advance the curved volumes into psychological proximity while cool whites and grays establish atmospheric depth and luminous expansion. Particularly noteworthy is the treatment of the ceiling as both functional illumination system and decorative pattern field, where the constellation of circular apertures creates rhythm and texture while dissolving the boundary between natural and artificial light sources. The monumental scale serves civic aspirations, proposing architecture as collective gathering space where individual bodies find orientation through dramatic spatial events—the sweeping stair, the soaring window, the enveloping curve. The work invites contemplation of how contemporary cultural institutions might embody values of openness, accessibility, and aesthetic generosity, creating environments that elevate everyday experience through formal invention. Viewers might consider how this interior proposes relationships between movement and rest, intimacy and grandeur, tradition and innovation.

Production Technology
On the material, the large surface adopts the natural bamboo and wood veneer with warm color, and the marble with natural texture. On the material processing, the volume relationship of the space is balanced properly with a concise technique, reflecting the design concept of green environmental protection.
Design Challenge
Light and shadow is the soul of space. During the day, designers introduce more natural relations, so that sunlight can form light and shadow changes in the space. Night combination of smooth shape hidden light source, diffuse light and shadow more easily create a soft and romantic artistic atmosphere.
Project Duration
The project started in July 2018 in Chengdu and finished in June 2019 in Chengdu.
Operation Flow
The library adopts neutral tone wood grain aluminum board, terrazzo wall and PVC floor material on the large surface of materials, and uses a concise technique to properly balance the interlacing and overlapping relationship of space on the material treatment, reflecting the design concept of green nature.
Research
Tranquility is the soul of the space. The whole space seems to be located in the nature's mountains and forests. The tree ceiling of "sweet dew", the linear light and shadow of "flowing streams", and the material texture of "slight perception" provide a perfect space for the interpretation of "nature". To construct a more tranquil inner space environment in the ocean of knowledge.
Inspiration
The interior design of the grand theater starts from the architectural form and takes "dancing ribbons" as the design language of the space, highlighting the smooth, dynamic and dynamic space atmosphere and also echoing the flowing architectural shape.
