About Snail Bay City Exhibition Hall

Snail Bay is a city exhibition hall in Kunming, China, created through the reconstruction and reuse of old buildings. The hall covers 6800 square metres and presents the future development of the Snail Bay area. The external walls were removed while the original structure and spatial pattern were preserved. A large glass curtain wall faces the natural landscape and opens the interior view. Lake water is drawn into the building, where a regular pool overlaps visually with the lake surface. A corridor connects indoor and outdoor space.

Kris Lin's Snail Bay City Exhibition Hall represents a distinguished contribution to contemporary civic architecture, embodying principles of refined minimalism and thoughtful environmental integration that position this work within broader conversations about cultural building design in the twenty-first century. The architect appears to engage deeply with traditions of modernist pavilion architecture while introducing a distinctly regional sensibility through material selection and landscape dialogue, creating an ensemble that suggests both international sophistication and contextual rootedness. The compositional strategy demonstrates remarkable spatial intelligence, with discrete volumes articulated through varying heights and setbacks that create a dynamic silhouette against the evening sky while maintaining visual coherence through consistent material language and proportional systems. Particularly accomplished passages include the vertical timber screening elements that transform the primary facade into a luminous lantern during evening hours, the processional colonnade that establishes ceremonial approach while providing sheltered transition between exterior and interior realms, and the integration of water features that extend the architectural presence into the landscape through reflection and material dialogue. The chromatic orchestration achieved through blue hour photography reveals how architectural lighting transforms the structure into an object of contemplation, with warm amber tones creating welcoming human presence within the cool atmospheric envelope of twilight. Thematically, this work appears to explore questions of institutional identity, civic gathering, and the relationship between built form and natural context, inviting consideration of how architecture might simultaneously command presence and defer to its environmental setting. The viewer might contemplate how the interplay of solid and void, light and shadow, geometric precision and organic landscape creates spaces that honor both individual contemplation and collective gathering.

Production Technology
Space is the essence of architecture. The designers’ strategy is to remove the external wall, dig its internal spatial memory and value, and endow it with proper temperament, while preserving its structure and spatial pattern. Under the requisite of maintaining the architecture function, a large area glass curtain wall is used on the side facing the natural landscape, which makes the indoor space vision completely open.

Reuse of old buildings
This case is the reconstruction and reuse of old buildings in Snail Bay. The Snail Bay Center is a government led urban renewal project that was upgraded on the original site of Old Snail Bay. The city exhibition hall is designed to show the future development of Snail Bay area.
Project Duration
The project started in October 2018 in Kunming,China and finished in March 2019 in Kunming,China, and was exhibited in Kunming,China in March 2019.
Operation Flow
The lake water is introduced into the building, and the regular pool and the natural lake surface form the visual effect of overlapping. The corridor connects the indoor and outdoor space, and at the same time breaks the monotonous water surface space, which enriches the landscape level of the pool. The openness and naturalness of the space create a flow between indoor and outdoor.
Research
The project is located in Kunming, it is also known as Flower City and Spring City. It is one of the most habitable cities in China. This case is the reconstruction and reuse of old buildings in Snail Bay. The Snail Bay Center is a government-led urban renewal project that was upgraded on the original site of Old Snail Bay.
Inspiration
Integration of indoor and outdoor
The project base is adjacent to Central Lake Park and has excellent natural landscape resources. Designers carried out a four dimensional integrated design from architecture, landscape, interior to soft decoration.
