Production Technology
Aligning an emotional connection to art with the client presented a substantial commitment of time and energy through gallery, art fair, and exhibit visits. Through this process, a shift in the imagined relationship between art and space occurred from object to dialog, and indeed between the client and art as a relationship rather than possession.
Design Challenge
The journey of artistic discovery, exploration and understanding took the designer and client on a two-year tour of galleries, art exhibitions and fairs in NY, London, Paris, and Taiwan. Through dialog with the art in these spaces, the client gained a self-understanding and engaged with art on a new level. The final pieces curated for this collection guided the overall design of the space, while the space itself became an extension of the art.
Project Duration
This project is built in 2018 in Taipei.
Operation Flow
This residence was created for a family of five: a couple, two children, and one grandmother. The layout for the various floors is arranged with the first floor logically a public space, the second for the children and grandmother, and the third floor for the couple. The multimedia space in the basement is the family’s entertainment space. Together with the outdoor garden and swimming pool, it provides a comfortable family atmosphere.
Research
In understanding this space both as art and through art, the goal for this project was curating a home art collection in sync with the client. The chemistry between art and space transforms environments in the forefront of human consciousness. This interaction shifts thinking, and even behavior in envisioning a better world through the seasons of time and emotion.
Inspiration
One main space is centered around Green Aquamarine Necklace, a piece by the contemporary French artist, Jean-Michel Othoniel. Inspired by his 4-story installation commissioned by Chanel, NYC, the flow of the necklace and the interplay of the individually hand-blown glass beads resonates with the space and overall aesthetic of the property.

Grand Interview about Family With a Pearl Necklace Luxury Residential

The color and form of the art piece had a great influence on how I designed the project, since I had to consider the visual balance while incorporating it. The other aspect was how the owner saw the art piece. Understanding the artist’s intentions with his work and the client’s attitude towards owner the piece helped me realize the project.

During the journey, we had a deep look into the creative processes of multiple artists. We visited many exhibitions and art studios to gain an understanding of the motivations and intentions of the creators. I believe that if clients can feel the emotions behind the art pieces, it can lead to them having new outlooks on life.

Each floor belongs to a different generation. The private areas all have convenient features that fit the users’ needs, so they can have their own little worlds without needing to come downstairs to the common area. The common area, on the other hand, is designed for family activities. Fulfilling both the resident’s need for privacy and family bonding time is a key point in creating this home.

Human behaviors aren’t necessarily rational, they are heavily influenced by their family and culture, that’s why we need to look at them through the lens of psychology and sociology. We have to observe and predict people’s needs and societal trends with scientific means. That’s how I approach design and management.

The professional kitchen set allows the family to hire top tier private chefs. With a Steinway piano and a specialized room, opera teachers can teach private lessons in the house. In the residence, there is also a cellar that can store up to 3000 wine bottles. Most importantly, we spent 3 years searching for the perfect art pieces for this project. The high-end equipment, the choice of fabrics, and the artwork selection are what makes this abode functional and aesthetic.

During the project, we provided graphics such as floor plans and 3D renderings to give the client a proper idea of our vision. We also explained the reasons behind our choices, the client then gave us their feedback and budget so we could have the best outcome.

The landscape designer is also an artist, so we installed large floor-to-ceiling window to connect the landscaping and the interior.

In recent years, the concepts of combining art and spatial design pop up from time to time on social media. The distance between art and daily life is getting smaller because people get to know more about different artists online, so household items now can have artistic flairs. KOHLER did a collaboration with artist Daniel Arshem, and that is an example of how residential design will be influenced by the art world.

It is difficult for an interior designer to incorporate multi-media elements into a project, it takes a wide range of knowledge to be able to tie things together. We chose a video art piece by artist Julian Opie to link the art-oriented interior design and technology.

You got to have admirations for art, architecture, and family life. With admiration come passion and the yearning for knowledge, only with knowledge and passion you showcase your professional abilities when the time is right. There are an unbelievable number of details that need to be considered in an interior project, a small oversight could mean a huge loss, so it’s important to keep learning and gaining more experience.
