About Coastline Table
Coastline is a table inspired by the rising sea levels caused by global warming. The tabletop is made of acrylic, also known as PMMA, and is shaped by high-temperature heating to suggest clear seawater. The supporting structure is made of michelia compressa and pine, and the wood represents the height of mountains. Hard wood was selected so that the structure would not deform during heating. The uneven edge recalls a coastline eroded by the sea, and the material combination allows light to pass through in layers. The table measures 350 mm in width, 650 mm in depth and 500 mm in height.

- Production Technology
- The table top is mainly made of PMMA, and the table is mainly made of michelia compressa and Pine.
- Design Challenge
- Liquid acrylic material is selected as the table top. Liquid acrylic shaping requires high-temperature heating. Therefore, hard wood is selected so that it will not deform during heating.
Considering the above, in the end, the desktop wood is chosen to use the hard texture Michelia compressa wood.
Liquid acrylic color grading is also one of the big challenges. It takes a lot of time for each test to get the best color and transmittance. - Project Duration
- The project started in January 2017 in Taiwan. And finished in June 2017 in Taiwan. And was exhibited in Songshan Cultural and Creative Park in June 2017. For the second time in Taipei Pavilion of fashion in November 2019.
- Operation Flow
- This is a table with good light transmission and beauty.
- Inspiration
- Taking the rising sea level caused by global warming as the starting point, the coastline was eroded by the seawater and showed an uneven appearance, making the table more layered.

Design Interview about Coastline Table
Inspiration comes from me as a country living on all sides surrounded by the sea, paying special attention to the issue of global warming sea level.
I hope that through the work, more people will pay more attention to the issue of sea level rise.
I am very grateful for the affirmation given by the competition, and hope to make more excellent works in the future.
It took about half a year from design to physical production.
This piece is to participate in a furniture exhibition, inspired by my own ideas
Because I like to use acrylic to try to make different works
Thanks to the school teachers for some design instructions to make the work better.
People who are willing to spend money to collect art.
Most designs do not choose to use liquid acrylic to make the desktop, and I used him, liquid acrylic is the biggest feature of the product.
Sea level rise first hit the coastline, so he was named.
Reche,Carpentry,Liquid acrylic
Use liquid acrylic as a desktop to give the product a good light transmittance and color.
When making the entity, there are professional technical personnel to assist in the production.
Assist in making liquid acrylic table tops, including placing in the oven and polishing.
The process of making a liquid acrylic tabletop needs to be put into the oven for heating, so the wood embedded in the acrylic must be very hard, otherwise the wood will be deformed during the heating process.
Thank you teacher for suggesting me to participate in this competition.
There will be a certain gap between the drawings that are often drawn and the actual production. Only through communication with the technical staff and changes in the design can the works get better and better.
