About Fusionista Interior Design
Fusionista is a cinema interior design created through the renovation of an existing cinema in Hong Kong. The project covers 4375 square metres arranged over four floors. The two lower floors hold the ticketing and public areas, while the two upper floors hold the screening halls. The circulation route leads visitors past the light food counters on the way to the halls, which supports sales. Marble, aluminium, fabric, carpet and glass distinguish each area by colour and texture. Durable materials were selected to reduce later maintenance costs.
Oft Interiors Ltd.'s Fusionista Interior Design presents an exemplary achievement within contemporary entertainment architecture, where the transformation of a transitional circulation space into a destination experience demonstrates the studio's command of theatrical spatial composition. The work engages with traditions of cinematic palace design while translating historical opulence into a contemporary material vocabulary that privileges sculptural gesture over decorative accumulation. The ceiling installation functions as the compositional cornerstone, its flowing copper-clad ribbons suggesting the unfurling of film stock or the fluid motion of projected light, perhaps referencing the very medium the space serves while creating an abstract interpretation of movement and narrative flow. Technical accomplishment manifests in the seamless integration of functional illumination within sculptural form, where LED strips embedded along the curved elements perform the dual role of wayfinding guidance and atmospheric mood creation. The material palette demonstrates sophisticated restraint: the warm copper tones provide focal warmth within an otherwise cool graphite environment, establishing emotional temperature gradients that progress from intimate warmth at human scale to cooler expansiveness at ceiling height. The reflective ceiling panels introduce spatial multiplication, effectively doubling the visual presence of the installation while creating subtle disorientation that heightens the transitional nature of the space. Green-tinted vertical elements at the corridor's depth suggest threshold and passage, their color providing chromatic relief while maintaining the sophisticated muted palette. The floor treatment, with its rhythmic alternation of warm and cool grey tiles following curvilinear patterns, extends the ceiling language into the horizontal plane, creating visual continuity across the volume's full extent. One might observe how the design achieves the paradox of creating a space that simultaneously encourages movement and invites pause, where visitors become participants in an ongoing spatial performance. What might it mean to transform the act of waiting into an aesthetic experience unto itself?

- Unique Properties
- This is a renovation project whose original site is also a cinema. However, with the change of consumption structure and business model, the original cinema was not suitable for the needs of young consumers. A new high-end cinema with new function orientation and unique "experiential consumption scene" was hoped to be created.

- Production Technology
- First of all, the profitability of the cinema is the sale of light food, therefore the line reflecting the traces of space users needs to guide consumers to different sales areas. The lower two floors are mainly for the ticketing area and the outside area, while the upper two floors are for the movie halls. In this way, the area of selling light food becomes the only way which must be passed to the cinema, which provides a favorable condition for the occurrence of consumption. The two upper floors are mainly providing a purer viewing environment for the cinema.
- Design Challenge
- What is different from the ordinary cinema is that, due to the limitation of the building itself, the entire cinema is distributed in four different floors and the functional areas are cut into pieces.
- Project Duration
- The project started in 2018 in HK and finished in 2019 in the same place.
- Operation Flow
- In addition to the arrangement of lines of moving, when it comes to the design style, the designer also presents distinctive functional space according to different materials of various colors, textures and tactile sensation, such as leather, copper, marble brick, steel bar and so on. At the same time, material properties need to be considered in the selection of materials, due to needs of the commercial space environment to be continuously maintained and the necessity to further reduce the maintenance cost in the later period.
- Research
- How to plan all the functional areas reasonably while the area and size of each floor are different? This is the key point of this pondering over the design.
- Inspiration
- We emphasize the importance of "experiential consumption scene" to the current business environment in design, the thinking over design is not only reflected in the visual tension, but also in the control of materials, the arrangement of lines of moving, and the countless logic behind.
