About Pineapple Pins Stationary Packaging

Pineapple Pins is a packaging design for push pins. The form is inspired by the pineapple fruit, whose rhythmic outer scales suggest the arrangement of the pins. The package measures 80 by 80 by 80 millimetres, so it fits in a hand, a pocket or a bag. It is made from recyclable and biodegradable ground cardboard and printed by flexography, which replaces the common plastic case. When opened, the package presents an array of pins on each inner face and can be turned inside out for easier use. Used pins can be dropped back into the package.

Sarthak Tavate's Pineapple Pins Stationary Packaging represents a compelling intersection of sustainable design thinking and playful visual communication that transforms the humble push pin from overlooked office commodity into an object of delight and considered presentation. The packaging system demonstrates remarkable ingenuity in its dual-function approach, where the protective container transcends its primary purpose to become an interactive display solution, the perforated cardboard surfaces inviting users to insert their colorful pins in personal arrangements that evolve with use. This transformation from packaging to permanent desktop accessory reflects contemporary design values that emphasize longevity, reduced waste, and emotional connection between user and object. The material choice of unbleached kraft cardboard communicates environmental consciousness while providing warm visual contrast against the synthetic brightness of the plastic pin heads, a dialogue between natural and manufactured that feels resolved rather than contradictory. The graphic identity system, featuring a stylized pineapple icon and clean sans-serif typography rendered in white against the cardboard ground, establishes brand recognition while maintaining the approachable, unpretentious character appropriate to the product category. The instructional diagrams visible on the lower sleeve demonstrate thoughtful consideration of user experience, guiding assembly and transformation through clear visual communication that transcends language barriers. The chromatic strategy of the pins themselves, spanning warm reds and oranges through cool blues and greens with intermediary yellows and pinks, suggests abundance and variety while creating inherent visual appeal regardless of how users arrange their individual collections. One might observe how this design elevates quotidian office supplies into objects worthy of display, inviting contemplation of how thoughtful packaging design can transform our relationship with everyday functional items.

Production Technology
The package is produced from recyclable and bio-degradable grinded cardboard. Using eco-friendly materials replacing the use of plastic cases was the obligation. The print is achieved with flexographic printing process. The push pins are stamped onto using existing manufacturing methods of planar punching with the pins attached to a plate, punched and released. The unit is easily mass manufacturable.
Design Challenge
Ideation and structuring for versatility were the most challenging parts of the project, following the basics to develop an optimum solution.
Project Duration
The project started in December 2019 and completed in July 2020 in Mumbai, India.
Operation Flow
The package offers a sense of perceptively attentive yet subtle. The push pins package upgrade implies the product image through a set of visual elements. A visual guide to the use of the package adheres to the overall product image. When opened, the package turns into an array of pins on each inner face and can further be flipped inside out for an easier constructive unit. The pins after use can be placed back or simply dropped into the package. The sheer versatility and ease of use is the essence.
Research
The research objective was to develop a distinct and precise level of requirements for the package to keep the product use cycle simple at the same time making it practical and versatile. Functionality was a major aspect of the design distinguishing it from the existing packages. The obligatory mandate was to replace the plastic packaging with eco-friendly materials. The user's standpoint as empathy was a major inspiration to innovate. Minimalism followed in ideation was also critical in getting a resourceful outcome. Ergonomically the dimensions were tested and validated for a better user experience.
Inspiration
Pineapple Pins is inspired by the structure and subsistence of the Pineapple fruit, the rhythmic arrangement of sharp scales on the outer walls of the fruit form the essence of the product packaging. A hypothetical brand that features a packaging solution for a persisting problem of picking, using and storing of push pins.
