About Serpentinata Pen

Serpentinata is a writing pen made by 3D printing. The design responds to the waste created by mass production, where more goods are made than are needed. Digital fabrication allows each pen to be produced only when it is required, so surplus stock is avoided. The twisting form recalls figura serpentinata, a Renaissance technique that adds a spiral movement to the human figure to create a graceful and dynamic effect. The shape is intended to give visible form to intelligence and to ideas born from inspiration.

KAIRI EGUCHI's Serpentinata Pen emerges from a contemporary design tradition that seeks to elevate everyday functional objects into sculptural statements, transforming the humble writing instrument into an exploration of form, materiality, and tactile experience. The design draws upon the Renaissance concept of figura serpentinata, that spiraling contrapposto movement celebrated by Michelangelo and Mannerist sculptors, translating this dynamic classical principle into the vocabulary of modern industrial design. The helical twist occurring at the center of each barrel creates a visual and ergonomic focal point that interrupts the expected cylindrical continuity of traditional pen forms, introducing complexity and movement while potentially offering enhanced grip comfort during extended writing sessions. The presentation of three chromatic variations demonstrates thoughtful exploration of material expression, from the absorptive matte darkness of the charcoal version through the intermediate gray to the revelatory transparency that exposes internal components as elements of visual interest rather than concealed machinery. This material transparency invites meditation on the relationship between surface and structure, between the aesthetic shell and functional mechanism. The granular, almost geological texture of the opaque versions suggests hand-friendly surfaces that would warm to touch and develop patina through use, while the translucent version offers an alternative sensory and visual experience emphasizing lightness and visibility. Such considered variation within a unified formal language speaks to sophisticated understanding of how material choice transforms object character while maintaining design coherence. The viewer might contemplate how this reimagining of the pen, that ancient tool of human expression and communication, honors its heritage while proposing new possibilities for the relationship between hand, instrument, and the act of inscription.

Unique Properties
In the rapidly changing society, the problem of wastes during mass production is an unsolved problem for decades, at the expense of the environment.
The idea of using new production technologies to create products that are only just needed is our concept.
Serpentinata, the 3D printed pen, is our first product, and it is aimed at and designed to reduce the impact on the environment by producing only what we need.
Production Technology
Figura Serpentinata is the Italian word for serpentine. It is the name of the Renaissance technique that was created to give a more graceful and dynamic feeling by adding a twisting movement to the motif of the human body.
It has the meaning of the ideas that we can create from nothing only based on inspiration. We designed while thinking that if the intelligence was visualized in a shape, it would look like this.
And this is where Serpentinata is named.
Inspiration
In recent years, the concept of digital fabrication has emerged worldwide to bring one answer to the waste problem of mass production. The idea is to use new production technologies, such as 3D printers, to create new products that suit one only, which one can not have with mass production. We decided to think about products that can be produced by digital fabrication with this aim, and this pen is our first product.
