About 2022 Phantasm Wool Scarf Collection

Gender-neutral pure wool scarves with unique digitally-printed contemporary patterns produced using a bespoke software programmed called Mov.i.see that uses body movement to transform digital data and reveal organic details not possible solely by computer programming. Mov.i.see enables the designer to create asymmetrical and non-repeat patterns, resulting in multifaceted and playful scarves that can be worn in different ways according to the mood or occasion, and are unlike any other products in the textiles or fashion accessories market.

The 2022 Phantasm Wool Scarf Collection by Yen Ting Cho Studio exemplifies a contemporary approach to textile accessory design that synthesizes geometric abstraction with traditional craft sensibilities, positioning itself within a lineage of pattern-making that draws upon early twentieth-century avant-garde movements while maintaining relevance to current fashion aesthetics. The work demonstrates remarkable chromatic sophistication through its employment of a carefully calibrated warm palette wherein bands of vermillion, orange, sienna, and cream create rhythmic progressions that interrupt and intersect with bold black-and-red checkerboard passages, suggesting both the systematic rigor of Constructivist composition and the organic irregularity of handcraft traditions. Technical accomplishment reveals itself in the seamless integration of multiple pattern systems within a single textile surface, the striped linear elements transitioning into geometric blocks with mathematical precision while maintaining visual coherence across the accessory's considerable length. The presentation methodology, employing a minimalist sage-toned ensemble as contextual backdrop, invites appreciation of the scarf as both functional garment and autonomous design object, its draped configuration revealing how pattern behavior transforms across three-dimensional folds. Thematic resonance emerges through the interplay of order and dynamism, the structured geometric vocabulary activated by the casual asymmetry of its arrangement suggesting contemporary approaches to wearing that honor individual expression within designed parameters. One might observe how the work participates in ongoing conversations regarding the elevation of functional accessories to collectible design status, the considered pattern development suggesting studio practice devoted to exploring optical phenomena through traditional textile media. How might the relationship between systematic pattern and spontaneous draping inform our understanding of designed objects that achieve completion only through human interaction and personal interpretation?

Unique Properties
The patterns are unique because they are created with the studio's digital software, mov.i.see, which uses body movement to reconstruct digital data and reveal organic details not possible solely by programming. This enables he design team to create asymmetrical, non-repeat patterns that are very different from those made using traditional methods eg. mirroring or repetition. Finished by hand, the patterns are digitally-printed onto natural fabric which enables the design team to reproduce the fine detail of the designs.
Dimensions & Packaging
Each scarf: pure wool fibre, 100cm wide x 200cm long, 0.4 kg weight. Pattern digitally-printed with ink free of heavy metals.

Production Technology
The design team uses a bespoke interactive software, mov.i.see, to create digital patterns. Mov.i.see uses body movement to reconstruct digital data and reveal organic details not possible solely by programming. For this Collection, the team used, for the first time, layered design to bridge the gap between the figurative and the abstract to represent the complexity of the COVID-19 virus. Digital printing techniques reproduce the fine detail of the original designs whilst retaining the special colour-pattern combinations. Pure fine-combed wool holds the ink and reveals the detail of the pattern.
Design Challenge
The challenge was to create patterns inspired by the difficult circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic that were colourful, optimistic and playful. The team researched thematic concepts and colour-ways, and experimented with mov.i.see to create the new patterns. The designers used, for the first time, layered design to integrate distinctive abstract patterns with figurative symbols (eg. houndstooth). The patterns were modified whilst they were being created, rather than allow the software to wholly dictate the design; consequently, the patterns reveal the authorship of the designer.
Project Duration
This Collection was inspired by the peculiar circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. The design team started designing the patterns in September 2020 and completed the project in February 2022 when the patterns were launched in New York City.
Operation Flow
A pure wool scarf with a digitally-printed pattern which can be worn as a gender-neutral fashion accessory. The studio produces unique and dynamic patterns that can be applied to playful, aesthetically-pleasing and desirable products. With asymmetrical and unique colour combinations, the scarf can be worn in different ways and to reflect individual expression, and fit changing fashion needs and occasions. Patterns are printed through the wool, so each pattern is double-sided. The wool is specially treated so that it is very comfortable and non-abrasive to the touch.
Research
The design team creates unique patterns using a bespoke digital software programme (mov.i.see), which uses body movement to reconstruct digital data and reveal organic details not possible solely by programming. Inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic, the team aimed to apply the designs to a saleable commodity - pure wool scarves - that are colourful, optimistic and playful. Through trial and error, the team found digital printing techniques that reproduce the fine detail of the original digital designs whilst retaining the special colour combinations. The scarves are retailed and exhibited internationally.
Inspiration
The 2022 patterns represent a personal creative response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Physically stranded between studios in two countries during national lockdowns, the design team looked inwards for inspiration. Longing to escape to a utopian paradise, the team envisaged a journey to a fantastical world. The response was fantastical, ethereal and playful patterns based on the imagined journey, incorporating radically new pattern structures and colour combinations.
