About Envisioning Beyond Legacy Exhibition

Envisioning Beyond Legacy is a multimedia exhibition to showcase the planning and infrastructure achievements of Hong Kong over the last 25 years, as well as the future development directions. Interactive installations and games are largely adopted to drive self-exploration of information by the public on their own initiative and provide an immersive visiting experience. Also, the inclusive design creates a barrier-free environment for everyone in the community.

Oval Design Limited's Envisioning Beyond Legacy Exhibition represents a distinguished achievement within contemporary exhibition design practice, demonstrating how digital media technologies may be orchestrated to create genuinely immersive environments that transcend conventional display paradigms and invite active visitor engagement with complex informational content. The installation appears to draw upon traditions of total environmental design pioneered by immersive art movements while integrating sophisticated data visualization techniques that transform abstract territorial and developmental information into sensory experience accessible through embodied presence rather than passive observation alone. The technical accomplishment manifests particularly in the seamless integration of multiple media layers—the towering vertical LED walls, the responsive floor projection system, and the suspended sculptural archipelago of angular forms bearing fragmented imagery—creating a unified spatial narrative that surrounds visitors within chromatic fields of remarkable intensity and variation. The compositional intelligence reveals itself in the careful calibration of scale relationships, positioning human figures as both viewers and viewed, their silhouettes becoming compositional elements that mediate between intimate bodily experience and technological monumentality. Color functions here not merely decoratively but informationally and atmospherically, with the tetradic palette of magentas, cyans, ambers, and violets creating zones of visual emphasis that guide attention while generating optical energy through complementary vibration. The suspended ceiling elements introduce welcome dimensional complexity, their angular trajectories breaking the dominant screen geometry and creating visual dialogue between two-dimensional display and three-dimensional sculptural presence. One might observe how the exhibition design transforms what could remain purely informational presentation into theatrical experience, inviting visitors to move through and discover rather than simply receive content. The work suggests productive synthesis between architectural thinking, media design, and curatorial practice. What might such immersive approaches reveal about the future relationship between visitors and cultural content?

Production Technology
Proactive design approach was adopted to stimulating visitors to explore and participate during their visitation. When visitors walk around on a giant HK map on LED floor with motion tracking sensors, a compass guided them to the nearest spot and triggered a popup info box on the LED wall, providing a clearer geographic blueprint to comprehend the linkage and synergy of all projects. Another co creating game backed up by big data analytics was set up for real time showing visitors their town planning options that served as public consultation exercise.
Design Challenge
Telling the story of a city development spanned almost 50 years in such a small area was the topmost to tackle. Also, the Hong Kong major planning and infrastructure initiatives involved plenty of information across various departments. Hence, massive communication works had been a time consuming task. As request, an inclusive exhibition was designed for public of different ages, ethnicities and disabilities. The team made effort to source amenities and materials such as audio guide, braille, stair lifts for any disabilities and optimise the visiting experience for everyone.
Project Duration
The exhibition started in 6 July 2022 in City Gallery in Hong Kong and ended in 30 November 2022.
Operation Flow
Proactive design approach was adopted to make all projects informative, engaging and alluring. When visitors walk around on a giant HK map on LED floor with motion tracking sensors, a compass guided them to the nearest spot and triggered a popup info box on the LED wall, providing a clearer geographic blueprint to comprehend the linkage and synergy of all projects. In a co creating game, visitor played the role of urban planner envisioning the making of future infrastructure. A large digital panel real time showed visitors their town planning options that served as public consultation exercise.
Research
Most notably the motion detection in sync with LED presentation for showcasing ten future projects of HKSAR, and the big data driven town planning panel for the Lantau Tomorrow Vision. Almost all core components of were digitalised for the ease of content update and reduce of any wastage. Recyclable PalmEco boards were widely used in fabrication. Equipment like LED monitors, digital panels, electronic devices were all rent based and worked out to be re used. Even more, the digital game Building the Islands of the Future is also an educational tool to deliver values of building a sustainable community for the future.
Inspiration
Envisioning Beyond Legacy was staged to ignite elation by impressing upon visitors how the HKSAR has planned to go from strength to strength after marking its 25th anniversary. It is about a journey for people of different generations and collectively witness the progression of Hong Kong. Instead of conventional exhibition where visitors look at descriptions passively, the team worked to maximise the interaction between exhibits and visitors for a deeper engagement.
