About The Nude Flat Residential House

The Nude Flat is a residential interior design in Hong Kong. The interior covers 1,468 square meters and is inspired by Cycladic architecture of the Greek islands. Curved forms are used for walls, furniture and details, so straight lines are rare. The entrance features a curved wall and a wooden floor with an organic lotus pattern. Seamless artificial Ottostone shapes the curved wall, while pink marble is used in the powder room and Calacatta marble in the bathroom. The three original bedrooms were reconfigured into a main suite with a walk-in wardrobe and a bathroom with a jacuzzi.

Working within the distinguished tradition of organic modernism that traces its lineage from the flowing spaces of twentieth-century masters through to contemporary explorations of biophilic design, The Nude Flat Residential House by Maggie Mo Jay Leung demonstrates a masterful synthesis of curvilinear architecture and tactile materiality that transforms residential space into an experience of continuous envelopment and sensory calm. The work's most striking formal achievement lies in its rejection of orthogonal convention in favor of sweeping curved walls rendered in subtly variegated venetian plaster, a surface treatment whose clouded, almost watercolor-like tonality in warm oyster and cream hues suggests the interior of a shell or the softness of morning light on natural stone. This curving envelope operates in sophisticated dialogue with the extraordinary pentagonal parquet flooring beneath, where irregular geometric tiles in warm walnut and lighter oak create a tessellated field that grounds the ethereal walls with organic materiality while echoing their rejection of rigid standardization. The seating arrangement, centered on a deeply channeled curved sofa whose form mirrors the architectural curves surrounding it, exemplifies the designer's commitment to furniture as spatial participant rather than mere object. Particularly noteworthy is the integration of functional elements into the continuous surface treatment, most evidently in the flush-mounted doors whose minimal reveals preserve the wall's sculptural integrity, and in the horizontal fireplace aperture that punctuates the plaster with warming flame without disrupting its material continuity. The dropped ceiling element traces an organic shape that defines the primary living zone while maintaining visual connection to adjacent spaces, its soft edge creating a sense of canopy and shelter within the larger volume. Viewers might contemplate how this interior proposes an alternative to the hard edges and sharp divisions that characterize much contemporary residential design, suggesting instead that domestic space might operate as a continuous embrace, a place where the distinction between structure and surface, between containing and comforting, dissolves into an experience of unified sanctuary.

Unique Properties
Stepping into the foyer, you will be greeted by a curvaceous wall incorporating an organic lotus-patterned wooden floor reflecting a sense of fluidity from the natural surroundings of the space.

The chandelier handmade by a Portuguese craftsman contrasts directly with the detailed brass marble dinner table. The contours of the furnishings are soft and curved creating contrasting lines and textures to the neat lines of the fireplace while natural daylight is spread strategically all over the home. The off-white shade perfectly matches to exude a warm glow even with the beige monotone.
Dimensions & Packaging

Production Technology
Inspired by pin-up pink sand beaches in Crete Greece, Pink hue marble was used in the powder. For the streamlined effect on the curved wall, the designers sourced seamless artificial Ottostone.

Calcutta marble and white were added to the bathroom, and the veining in the stone brings visual interest, spacious and bright to the space.
Design Challenge
Custom making the round-edge furniture was one thing; the walls quite another. There is a particularly challenging replaced the offending sharp corner to be a curved door leading into the couple's bedroom, continuing with the same design language.
Project Duration
The project started in July 2021 and finished in July 2022 in Hong Kong.
Operation Flow
The original three bedrooms were more than the client needed, so the space was reconfigured to provide a generous main suite with an extravagant walk-in wardrobe and a wellness-inspired bathroom with a jacuzzi.
Research
The design is used seductive simplicity, and a neutral palette to design a serene and sensual living area by embracing the curve.
Be it a wall, a piece of furniture, or even a detail such as a door handle, there is barely a straight line to be seen. For the wall finishes, a group of artists was assembled to hand-paint stucco patterns in different variations.
Inspiration
This project is inspired by the Cycladic culture, best known for its schematic flat female idols carved out of the islands' pure white marble. It is important for the design to follow the core values of traditional Cycladic architecture found on the Greek islands by discovering its curvaceous shapes in all kinds of forms.
