About Szhk Science and Technology Project High Rise Office

Szhk Science and Technology Project is a high-rise office development in Shenzhen, China. The 250 metre main building recalls the extending form of the Chinese parasol tree, while the retail podium is shaped like trees and its facade echoes parasol leaves. The design forms a 24-hour circle of living, leisure and working spaces, with a community health centre, a treehouse bookshop, a game centre and an art centre. Natural ventilation, perforated aluminium facade panels, a green podium roof and rooftop solar water heating reduce energy use.

The Szhk Science and Technology Project High Rise Office by Aedas exemplifies the sophisticated formal language of contemporary high-rise architecture, demonstrating how sculptural expression and functional efficiency may coexist within the demanding parameters of commercial development. This work participates in an ongoing architectural conversation concerning the activation of tower facades through three-dimensional articulation, moving beyond the minimalist glass curtain wall tradition toward a more expressive tectonic vocabulary that engages with light, shadow, and temporal change. The primary tower's distinctive vertical incisions create what might be understood as a contemporary interpretation of the deeply modeled facades found in mid-century brutalist architecture, yet executed through the refined material palette of contemporary construction technology. The warm bronze glass panels appear to reference the earth tones traditional to regional architectural expression while the white vertical elements suggest aspirational lightness and technological advancement. The compositional relationship between the sculptural primary tower and its more restrained companion speaks to thoughtful urban planning strategies that balance landmark architectural gestures with contextually respectful background buildings. The curvilinear podium structure introduces organic formal language that mediates between the vertical towers and the horizontal urban datum, perhaps suggesting connections to emerging biomorphic design trends in contemporary practice. The atmospheric rendering captures that liminal moment when natural and artificial illumination begin to merge, investing the composition with contemplative qualities that transcend mere documentation of built form. Viewers may find themselves drawn to consider how architecture participates in the construction of collective identity and aspiration within rapidly developing urban contexts.

Unique Properties
This development is an important R&D exchange area, and the gateway between Shenzhen and Hongkong. This project is committed to creating a central hub in the Science and Technology Innovation Zone with international exchanges and regional integration. This project is intend to create a 24-hour living circle includes living, leisure and working spaces, combined with some special activity nodes, like community health center, treehouse bookshop, game center and art center.
Dimensions & Packaging
The design is tend to maximize the use of natural ventilation system to minimize use of air conditioning and also enhance outdoor and indoor space comfort, the perforated aluminum board use on the tower’s façade helps the reduction of co2 emission. And use roofing materials with high SRT values to reflect solar radiation to minimize urban heat island effect. The green podium’s roof improves the performance of roof insulation, effectively reduce the heat gain through the roof for the top floor. The energy saving effect is particularly significant in cold climate.
Additionally, in the podium façade, use daylight through glazed façade and skylight to minimize use of artificial lighting, and vertical fins effectively reduce solar heat gain through the façade to reduce cooling load and energy use. In the building roof, the rooftop solar hot water system is installed for apartments to generate hot water for bathroom to reduce electricity or gas use.
Project Duration
The project will be built around May 2025, in Shenzhen, China.
Inspiration
The 250m main building recalls the form and extending gesture of the Chinese parasol tree whilst also responding to the urban texture. The metaphor reflects on the concept of hospitality embracing talents around the world, and signaling shared prosperity between this two cities. The retail podium is shaped like trees to create a lively atmosphere, additionally, the façade of the podium is also echoing the leaves of the parasol trees.
