About Explorer Multifunctional Study Desk

Explorer is a multifunctional study desk designed for children. The height can be adjusted from 52 to 79 centimeters to suit the height of the child. The desktop can be tilted at any angle between 0 and 50 degrees. A ruler made for the inclined desktop attaches magnetically to the upper and lower parts of the surface to assist drawing, reading and writing. The divided desktop area keeps pens and books from falling and supports a healthy sitting posture. Two drawers hold books, stationery and an integrated charging hub. The bookshelf carries a motion sensor light.

The Explorer Multifunctional Study Desk by Two square meters exemplifies a thoughtful approach to children's furniture design that honors the Scandinavian tradition of marrying functional intelligence with aesthetic warmth. This work emerges from a contemporary design philosophy that recognizes the study environment as fundamentally formative, understanding that the spaces children inhabit during their developmental years shape not only their immediate comfort but their lasting relationship with learning itself. The designer demonstrates sophisticated understanding of ergonomic principles through the incorporation of height-adjustable mechanisms, acknowledging that children's bodies exist in constant states of growth and transformation. The material palette speaks to values of authenticity and sensory richness—natural timber surfaces invite tactile exploration while providing warmth that plastic alternatives cannot replicate. The perforated metal backboard represents an ingenious multifunctional solution, simultaneously serving as visual boundary, organizational surface for pinned materials, and ventilation element. One observes careful attention to the Z-shaped base structure, which provides robust stability while maintaining visual lightness and allowing unobstructed leg movement beneath the work surface. The integrated storage solutions—from the hutch shelving to the subtle front drawer finished in calming sage green—suggest understanding that organizational capacity reduces cognitive load and supports focused attention. The presence of natural elements in the staging, including small potted succulents and cacti, perhaps evokes biophilic design principles that recognize the psychological benefits of bringing nature into interior environments. The desk invites consideration of how thoughtfully designed objects participate in the rituals of daily life, transforming the potentially mundane activity of homework into an experience worthy of aesthetic investment. How might such careful attention to a child's immediate environment cultivate lasting appreciation for the designed world?

Production Technology
Nowadays, it is common to study and work from home. As an ergonomic desk suitable for different groups of people, the Explorer provides an efficient solution for users. The triangular design of its legs and bookshelves reduces the use of materials while ensuring aesthetics and structural stability, contributing to environmental protection.
Design Challenge
The unique desktop division prevents pens, books and other items from falling to the ground when the desktop is tilted. The front board provides space for the user's arms, helping to keep healthy sitting posture, improving the comfort of use and the efficiency of learning and working.
Project Duration
The project started in July 2021 in Hang Zhou and finished in July 2022 in Hang Zhou.
Operation Flow
The height can be adjusted to suit users of different heights. The desktop can be adjusted at different angles to let users choose the most comfortable seating position for activities like writing, reading or drawing. There are two drawers underneath the desktop, the front one for books and stationaries, the back one for integrated chargehub. It helps users to keep desktops tidy, while facilitating the use of electronic devices and improving work and study efficiency.
Research
The exploration of the home study desk took 1.5 years from project initiation to design delivery. We conducted market research in 12 cities and visited 100 households to record user experiences. We iteratively designed the product multiple times during the process. Additionally, we searched for suitable materials, processes, equipment, and factories with high cost-effectiveness from various original material sources, investing over 3 million yuan. Finally, we successfully completed this product.
Inspiration
The bookshelf is equipped with motion sensor light, and the lighting area could be adjusted by rotation. It brings more sensory experience and comfort to users.
The design of the table leg structure is unique. Compared with the conventional study table, it is stable without the rear beam between legs. Therefore, the product uses less material, and at the same time, the child can stretch the legs comfortably.
