About Haiyan Smart Home Competition Brand Identity
Haiyan Smart Home Competition is a brand identity created for a cultural and creative design event held in Haiyan County. The main visual uses a rotating and twisted three-dimensional house form. The shifting shape expresses change and reconstruction in home life brought by smart technology. Technology-inspired colours support the theme. The graphics are built as vector artwork, so they remain clear at any size and twist in different directions across media. Applications include space installations, posters, brooches and cups.
Ying Gao's Brand Identity for the smart home competition emerges from contemporary design discourse where experiential branding and environmental communication converge to create immersive platforms for industry dialogue and creative celebration, positioning itself within the expanding field of event identity systems that extend beyond traditional print and digital applications into spatial and temporal dimensions, the work demonstrating sophisticated understanding of how brand presence operates at architectural scale within live audience contexts, drawing upon lineages of corporate presentation design refined through decades of technology sector launches and industry conferences while incorporating more recent developments in seamless digital-physical integration and atmospheric brand communication, the compositional achievement evident in the masterful orchestration of multiple screen surfaces into a unified visual statement that maintains coherent identity while avoiding monotonous repetition, the central organizing principle of flowing translucent ribbons that appear to move across and between screen segments creating both literal and metaphoric continuity, suggesting the flow of ideas, the interconnection of spaces within smart homes, and the fluid nature of contemporary domestic technology, these organic forms providing essential visual warmth and approachability that counterbalance the rational precision of the typographic information layers, preventing the system from feeling overly corporate or impersonal, the chromatic sophistication particularly noteworthy in how the palette negotiates between the cool technological associations of blues and the warmer human-centered associations of coral and peach tones, creating a visual language that honors both the technical innovation and the domestic human context of smart home applications, the scale relationships carefully calibrated to create appropriate grandeur befitting a significant industry competition while the flowing organic elements maintain accessibility and avoid intimidating audiences, the typographic treatment demonstrating refined hierarchy where large date numerals provide immediate temporal orientation, the repeated "CHANGE" messaging establishes thematic resonance suggesting transformation and innovation, and the smaller supporting text layers provide necessary specificity without cluttering the overall composition, the dimensional quality of the ribbon forms adding material richness that distinguishes this identity from purely flat graphic systems, suggesting tangible presence even within digital presentation contexts, these forms appearing to catch light naturalistically and possess subtle internal depth that rewards sustained viewing, the systematic deployment across multiple screens creating rhythmic visual cadence where repetition establishes brand recognition while subtle variations between screens maintain viewer engagement and suggest dynamic rather than static identity expression, the integration with the physical architecture of the venue demonstrating sophisticated environmental design thinking where the identity does not simply occupy space but actively shapes spatial experience and audience perception, the darkness of the surrounding auditorium and exposed infrastructure providing essential contrast that makes the illuminated brand content appear luminous and almost levitating, creating memorable visual impact while the silhouetted audience in foreground emphasizes the collective nature of the event and the shared experience of engaging with design excellence, the work participating in broader conversations about how brands communicate in experiential contexts, how information design and emotional design integrate within single systems, and how contemporary competitions position themselves as platforms for industry advancement rather than mere judgment venues, the identity suggesting that the competition values innovation, interconnection, transformation, and forward movement while maintaining clarity and professional authority, the overall achievement residing in the synthesis of multiple design challenges including information hierarchy, aesthetic appeal, brand differentiation, spatial integration, technical execution across large-scale digital displays, and the creation of memorable experiential moments that extend brand recognition beyond the immediate event context, inviting viewers to consider how visual identity systems might expand beyond traditional applications to shape environments, orchestrate collective experiences, and communicate complex values through the integration of form, color, typography, motion suggestion, scale, and atmospheric presence.
Press Kit
- Unique Properties
- The design stands apart from others by focusing on how smart homes are reshaping lifestyles. Unlike conventional works that emphasize regional traditional culture, this design skillfully integrates elements of technology and home in its visual language. Utilizing a rotating, twisted 3D house form, it not only intuitively conveys the concepts of change and reconstruction but also creates a unique visual impact and sense of fashion through innovative graphic language and tech-inspired color schemes.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- Use vector graphics to ensure clarity at various resolutions; ensure unified color management and adopt specific technological color combinations; animations and interactive elements must be compatible with mainstream display devices to ensure smooth transitions between key frames and clearly convey the theme of "transformation".

- Production Technology
- The design and production process relies on digital tools and 3D modeling technology to achieve the expression of "changing home". In the design implementation, physical objects such as space installations, promotional posters, brooches, water cups, etc. are all made of high-quality materials and precise printing technology to ensure that the visual performance and physical texture meet expectations and achieve seamless integration of digital and physical elements.
- Design Challenge
- The greatest challeng is making the design both forward-looking and relatable to the public. External challenges primarily involve ensuring the design concept can be realized through practical production processes, such as material selection, printing, and digital display technologies.
To overcome these challenges, the team do lots of things to ultimately achieving seamless integration between the design concept and its practical application. - Project Duration
- The project started its design phase in February 2023 in Hangzhou, was completed in August 2023, and the official event was held in September 2023.
- Operation Flow
- The design primarily focuses on visual identity. For instance, in various media, the graphics twist and extend in different directions to form new shapes. To achieve optimal results, it is crucial to maintain the clarity and adaptability of the graphics across various mediums, as well as their alignment with the overarching theme of "intelligence." This can be reinforced through the thoughtful selection of materials and color schemes to enhance the expression of the theme.
- Research
- The "Haiyan Smart Home" competition successfully attracted the attention of many people. The event received significant media coverage and widespread dissemination across various sectors. The competition facilitated the signing of cooperation agreements between winning works and local enterprises. It contributed to industrial growth by increasing societal focus on Haiyan and explored new design languages.
- Inspiration
- Invited by the Haiyan County Government for a project: designing the main visual for the upcoming "Cultural and Creative Competition of Smart Homes" in Haiyan County. The design inspiration stems from observing the continuous innovation in smart home technology and the transformation of home life. The concept of homes in transformation emerges, focusing on how intelligence is reshaping the home experience from within. The competition aims to inspire more people to take part in this competition.
