About Pottery Art Gallery Mixed Use Architecture
The Pottery Art Gallery located in Daegu, Alpha City, is designed to maximize versatility for various purposes, incorporating a layout that overcomes the topographical features. The exterior features two distinct masses stacked on top of each other. The lower level consists of public spaces accessible to visitors, while the upper level comprises private research spaces. The design of the courtyard is inspired by the sinuous shape of pottery, opening up towards the outside and enclosing the inner space. This maintains the internal aspect of the courtyard space while adapting to the urban axis.
Young Jae You's Pottery Art Gallery Mixed Use Architecture emerges as a distinguished contribution to contemporary architectural practice, demonstrating sophisticated engagement with both traditional craft sensibilities and advanced computational design methodologies. The work positions itself within broader conversations surrounding cultural facility design, where the challenge of housing artistic programs within commercially viable mixed-use frameworks demands exceptional sensitivity to material expression and urban presence. The façade system presents particular technical achievement through its three-dimensional precast concrete modules, each pyramidal element precisely calibrated to create dynamic shadow patterns that animate the building's skin throughout diurnal cycles, suggesting the artist's hand evident in ceramic surface treatments while employing contemporary fabrication technologies. The sweeping curtain wall at the podium level demonstrates accomplished integration of transparency and reflection, its teal-tinted glazing simultaneously revealing interior activities and mirroring the surrounding urban fabric, thereby establishing dialogue between public and private realms. Compositionally, the work achieves elegant resolution of the perennial architectural challenge of mediating between tower and base, employing material and geometric differentiation to articulate distinct programmatic zones while maintaining formal coherence through chromatic restraint and proportional relationships. The warm earth tones at street level, suggestive of fired clay or weathered copper, ground the composition in materiality evocative of ceramic traditions referenced in the gallery's cultural mission. Rooftop plantings and integrated landscaping elements soften the geometric precision, introducing biophilic qualities that enhance occupant wellbeing and urban ecology. Viewers might contemplate how contemporary architecture continues finding inspiration in traditional craft practices, transforming artisanal sensibilities through technological innovation while honoring heritage through thoughtful material expression and programmatic dedication.

- Unique Properties
- The exterior features two distinct masses stacked on top of each other. The lower level consists of public spaces accessible to visitors, while the upper level comprises private research spaces. The facade materials were carefully chosen to show its symbolic nature derived from the culture of pottery. The curvature design of the courtyard is inspired by the sinuous shape of pottery, opening towards the outside and gradually enclosing the inner space at the same time. Idea of the design came from the process of pottery making, the term, that is used as a way to describe contraction between the ceramic and the glaze causing the specks on Ceramic.

- Production Technology
- The design of the building clearly embodies the symbolic nature of the ceramic culture through the main facade with the unique ceramic pattern of Bing-ryeul. The fadade is not just a simple form but also gives the impression of illumination of white porcelain by using a three-dimensional pattern of anodized aluminum panels.
- Design Challenge
- Despite its geographical conditions and suburban site location, in terms of its programs that had two distinctive characteristics, the challenge was to create a space that embodies both public and private programs within the building using its topographical aspect to the design. As a result, we were able to minimize the exhaust of surrounding natural elements providing multidimensional and welcoming view to users of the building.

- Research
- The Pottery Art Gallery consists of commercial, office, and cultural spaces, the challenge was to maintain privacy and activity for each program by utilizing the internal courtyard and floors. Additionally, exterior volumes are vertically divided to allow independent use by each program, while the layered external landscape spaces are visually connected through the courtyard. Therefore, the overlapping form of external spaces creates a new, multidimensional view of the public.
