About Jo Chu Sake Bottle
Naorai created a new form of sake by distilling it without heat, allowing the flavor of the sake to remain intact. To represent the depth and tranquility of Japanese culture, "shide" (paper streamers) are used to help connote a sacred area. To express the beauty of the sake, Nosigner traced the shape of a water-filled balloon created by surface tension and connoted the moment when purified water droplets drop.
Positioned within the rich continuum of vessel design that spans millennia of human craft tradition, Eisuke Tachikawa's Jo Chu Sake Bottle emerges as a refined meditation on the essential relationship between container and contained, form and function, tradition and contemporary sensibility. The work demonstrates remarkable compositional achievement through its teardrop profile, a shape that appears to have been drawn from nature itself, perhaps evoking a single drop of water frozen at the moment of perfect fullness before release. This organic silhouette achieves visual harmony through proportional relationships that suggest familiarity with classical design principles while remaining distinctly modern in execution. The technical accomplishment evidenced in the glass work reveals sophisticated understanding of material behavior, the uniform wall thickness and flawless transparency speaking to exacting standards of manufacture that honor artisanal values within contemporary production contexts. The decorative intervention of the diagonal band with its sequence of interlocking diamond shapes introduces geometric rhythm without overwhelming the vessel's essential purity, suggesting possible references to traditional textile patterns or architectural lattice work translated into graphic form. Chromatically, the work achieves its effects through studied restraint, allowing the natural optical properties of glass itself to provide visual interest through refraction, reflection, and the subtle accumulation of color where material thickness increases. The natural cork stopper introduces organic warmth and textural contrast that grounds the otherwise crystalline perfection of the glass body, creating material dialogue that enriches the sensory experience of the object. The silver-gray graphics maintain harmony with the transparent vessel while providing sufficient visual weight to establish brand identity without disrupting the meditative quality of the overall design. This work invites contemplation of how contemporary design might honor traditional forms while speaking in distinctly present-day visual language, and how the simplest vessel might elevate the ritual of sharing and celebration that beverage service embodies across cultures.

- Unique Properties
- Sake has been connected to the faith of Japanese people since ancient times and is treated as an entity connecting people and the Gods. It is an essential and crucial aspect when discussing the culture of our country.
Therefore, we incorporated the "shīde" (paper streamers), a motif representing the essence of Shinto prayers, onto the bottle shape that recreates the natural form produced by the surface tension of the liquid, capturing the moment when a drop of purified alcohol falls. - Dimensions & Packaging
- 11cm x 11cm x 25.5cm/Outer dimensions of box
- Design Challenge
- We aimed to design a bottle with a clear concept, reflecting the shape of water, so there were very few difficulties in the design process. However, because the bottle is organic and asymmetrical, there were various challenges for the manufacturing company.
