About Huajiang Science Lab Classroom Renovation
The specialized classroom serves as an experimental environment where children engage in fundamental scientific practices such as observation, inquiry, hypothesis generation, experimentation, and inference drawing within the natural realm. As education evolves, classrooms must adapt to contemporary needs. In addition to updating essential equipment, provisions for convenient access to and from the classroom are imperative. Spatial reconfigurations aim to facilitate increased interaction between teachers and students, fostering a relaxed and conducive learning atmosphere.
Daisuke Nagatomo and Minnie Jan's Huajiang Science Lab Classroom Renovation represents a thoughtful intervention within the evolving discourse of educational architecture, demonstrating how existing institutional structures might be transformed into environments that inspire curiosity and collaborative discovery, the designers appear to have approached this adaptive reuse project with sensitivity to both the building's structural heritage and the pedagogical aspirations of contemporary science education, the most striking formal decision involves the dramatic application of deep cerulean blue to the existing concrete ceiling structure, a bold chromatic gesture that transforms utilitarian structural elements into an enveloping atmospheric presence suggestive of sky or sea, this treatment exemplifies a philosophy of material honesty combined with chromatic transformation, preserving the authentic character of concrete while imbuing it with unexpected visual poetry, the curvilinear boundary where ceiling meets wall introduces biomorphic softness that counterbalances the orthogonal discipline of laboratory furniture and fenestration patterns, below this azure canopy the designers have deployed a carefully calibrated palette of natural materials dominated by pale maple veneer millwork and warm oak flooring that together establish a grounded earthiness against the ceiling's celestial aspiration, the furniture selection demonstrates awareness of Nordic design heritage through the inclusion of elegant three-legged stools whose bentwood construction and restrained proportions reference mid-century Scandinavian traditions while serving contemporary functional requirements, particularly noteworthy is the integration of storage elements featuring soft polychromatic accent colors that introduce playfulness appropriate to educational contexts while maintaining overall chromatic discipline, the generous natural lighting strategy and supplementary track systems ensure optimal illumination for scientific work while the sculptural pendant fixture adds an element of artistic contemplation, viewers might consider how the transformation of ceiling into colored expanse alters the phenomenological experience of learning within this space.

- Unique Properties
- The specialized classroom is an experimental space. In the realm of nature, children engage in crucial steps such as observation, questioning, hypothesis formation, experimentation, and drawing conclusions. A new type of classroom must adapt to the progress of the times. Apart from updating basic equipment, it should also provide areas where children can easily come and go after class.

- Design Challenge
- The creative challenge of this project is to create the connection between the main classroom and the small library space next to it. The semi-circle opening connects the two spaces as students going through the gate for their explorations. Therefore, the design challenges the controlling student's emotional states by choosing the color and material.
- Project Duration
- The project started in December 2022 in Taipei City and finished in August 2023.
- Operation Flow
- The classroom is designed for science experiment class where the teacher performs in front of students prior to the students conduct their experiments. Therefore, the U-shaped students desks are facing the teacher and large touch screen at the center of the classroom.
- Research
- This project is a part of renovating educational space for younger children, such as elementary, junior, and high school. The principal of design approach is to enhance student's exposure to the high aesthetic standard while learning at their school.
- Inspiration
- The space is divided into two main areas: the primary teaching area and the exploration area. The teacher's preparation desk is arranged in a place where students can easily be seen entering and exiting for management purposes. Additionally, a handwashing station is added to significantly reduce the time spent on washing equipment. The curved ceiling symbolizes centripetal force towards learning and represents the sky of the universe and curiosity about nature.
