About Chuji Retail
Although this store is located in the international city of Tokyo, it was planned in a quiet location a little ways back. There are many flashy stores with a Chinese atmosphere in the surrounding area, but this store has a modern Japanese atmosphere Zen. By using materials that are readily available, costs were kept down, while the cutting method and details were ingeniously designed to make it original and special. Also, with sustainability in mind, used tea leaves were dried and mixed into the plastering material for reuse. It is an expression that is rich in both appearance and aroma.
This intimate retail environment demonstrates sophisticated material choreography and spatial refinement characteristic of contemporary design approaches that position retail experience as cultural meditation rather than transactional exchange. The architectural vocabulary draws upon minimalist design traditions that emerged in the latter twentieth century, particularly those emphasizing honest material expression, geometric clarity, and spatial restraint, while the prominent display of ceramic vessels and tea culture objects suggests engagement with traditional craft lineages and the ritual dimensions of domestic material culture. The compositional achievement resides in the measured tension between rectilinear architectural framework and organic biomorphic elements, the live-edge counter providing sculptural counterpoint to the geometric rigor of the brass shelving system and black window grid, this dialogue between geometric order and natural irregularity creating visual dynamism while maintaining overall spatial harmony. The chromatic sophistication emerges through careful temperature orchestration: the pervasive warmth of honey-toned timber, natural wood furniture, and brass metallic accents establishes an enveloping earth-palette sanctuary, punctuated by the cool twilight blues visible through the fenestration, this warm-cool contrast creating atmospheric depth and temporal awareness while the textured gold backdrop functions as luminous transitional tone harmonizing warm and cool registers. Technical facility appears in the precise integration of concealed LED lighting beneath each shelf, transforming functional illumination into compositional element that emphasizes horizontal rhythm and enhances object presentation through upward wash and subtle shadow gradation, the lighting design demonstrating understanding of how illumination shapes spatial perception and object legibility. The careful curation of displayed objects ranging from substantial cylindrical vessels with calligraphic markings to delicate white teaware suggests thematic coherence around tea culture and ceramic craft traditions, the objects functioning simultaneously as retail inventory and cultural artifacts, their arrangement on open shelving inviting close observation and contemplation. The selection of bentwood chairs references design history through their iconic mid-century modern silhouette, introducing human scale and intimate social suggestion while their natural materials and organic curves harmonize with the broader material palette and formal vocabulary. The fenestration strategy establishes crucial dialogue between interior sanctuary and exterior temporal flow, the floor-to-ceiling windows framed in slender black mullions creating visual permeability while the dusk atmosphere visible beyond suggests the retail environment as threshold space occupied during transitional hours, perhaps early evening when artificial lighting begins to dominate and interior warmth becomes more pronounced against darkening exterior. The textured metallic backdrop functions as neutral luminous ground that enhances object legibility without competing for attention, its subtle granular surface catching and diffusing ambient light to create atmospheric depth, suggesting possible application of aggregate materials or specialized metallic finishes. One might observe how this environment proposes retail experience as aesthetic practice, inviting visitors to slow their pace and engage objects through contemplative observation rather than hurried consumption, the spatial composition and material refinement suggesting that acquisition of craft objects represents participation in cultural continuity and aesthetic lineage rather than mere commercial transaction.

- Unique Properties
- Cost control is important, especially when designing a small-scale store. By using readily available materials rather than special materials, we were able to keep costs down, while also creating an original and special space by devising cutting methods and details.
In addition, used tea leaves were dried, crushed, and mixed into the plastering materials. Even after being mixed in, the fragrance and slight color were extracted, and the texture was also evident, resulting in a unique finish. - Dimensions & Packaging
- Area 66 Square meter , Ceiling height 2450mm , Seating capacity 10 people

- chinese, tea, sweets, teahouse, factory
- Production Technology
- Another existing store discards about 600 kg of used tea leaves per year.It cannot be served to customers again, but it still has enough aroma and consciousness left in it.Of course, we will not be able to reuse or upcycle all of these materials in this project. Not only will this project appeal to the senses of touch and smell, but it will also raise awareness of sustainability at the same time.
- Design Challenge
- There are no straight sections in the seating area of this store. It is difficult to arrange tables efficiently. So we arranged a large table that follows the curve. However, a large table is inevitably heavy. To make it look lighter, we gave it a single leg and hung the end from the ceiling. This created a mysterious space where something heavy appears to be floating in the air.
- Project Duration
- The project started in April 2023 and finished in Aril 2024 in Tokyo
- Operation Flow
- Customers can choose and purchase products from the display cases and shelves, and those who make a reservation can enjoy a course set that includes carefully selected Chinese tea and sweets.
- Inspiration
- The store is located in the multinational city of Tokyo.
Although there are many fancy Chinese restaurants in the neighborhood, we have created a gentle space that appeals to the senses of sight, touch, and smell, aiming for a modern Tokyo-style Chinese store. - Image Credits
