About Chen Yun Office
Chen Yun is an office interior located on the top floor of Tianmuli in Hangzhou. The design occupies about 100 square meters and serves a creative studio. Fair-faced concrete gives the rooms a raw texture, while planting and colored furniture add a natural mood. A glass curtain wall links the interior with daylight and the view outside. A movable wall rotates to open or close the entrance, so the layout can change through the day. The plan blends work, discussion and rest areas within a small floor space.
Chen Yun Office by Jacky Zhang exemplifies a distinguished approach to contemporary workplace design that harmoniously synthesizes Eastern contemplative spatial traditions with the functional requirements of modern professional environments, creating an interior experience that elevates the quotidian act of circulation into an opportunity for mindful transition and psychological restoration. The design demonstrates remarkable sophistication in its manipulation of the corridor typology, transforming what might conventionally serve as mere connective tissue into a phenomenologically rich sequence of spatial experiences that invite pause, reflection, and engagement with carefully curated material and botanical interventions. The technical achievement evident in the precise detailing of the vertical slatted screens, which establish measured rhythm against the more organic timber lattice elements deeper within the composition, speaks to a refined understanding of how repetitive architectural elements can create visual music while simultaneously serving practical functions of spatial modulation and privacy gradation. The integration of the interior rock garden installation, featuring naturalistic stone specimens and what appears to be raked gravel evoking traditional meditation garden traditions, introduces contemplative symbolism within the professional context, suggesting that workplace design might accommodate moments of psychological centering alongside productive activity. The biophilic strategy evident in the inclusion of living plant specimens—both the delicate deciduous trees within the garden installation and the vibrant yellow tulips in the foreground vignette—demonstrates understanding of how natural elements contribute to occupant wellbeing and environmental quality within interior spaces. The furniture selection, pairing the boldly sculptural contemporary seating form with the antique-style occasional table, creates a thoughtful dialogue between temporal registers that enriches the spatial narrative. What contemplative traditions might contemporary workplace design draw upon to create environments that nurture both productivity and human flourishing?
