About Claude's Kitchen All Day Dining Restaurant

The space is designed to offer a dynamic, open dining experience with a welcoming atmosphere. It features a bar, three dining zones, and two private rooms. The design embodies a smart casual aesthetic, with calming navy ceilings that unify the space, complemented by low materials and abundant greenery. Three skylights allow natural light to flood the venue, enhancing the openness and highlighting the feature ceiling in each area, creating a sophisticated yet comfortable environment for guests.

Mika Kanayama's Claude's Kitchen All Day Dining Restaurant demonstrates accomplished spatial choreography within contemporary hospitality design traditions that prioritize material authenticity, biophilic enrichment, and atmospheric layering to create environments supporting extended habitation and social exchange. The composition reveals particular sophistication in its orchestration of light as primary spatial definer, deploying a carefully calibrated multi-source lighting strategy that combines the warm intimate glow of industrial-inspired pendant fixtures with the diffuse atmospheric presence of suspended spherical luminaires, creating varied luminous zones that suggest temporal flexibility appropriate to all-day programming while maintaining consistent warmth and invitation. The material palette demonstrates confident restraint, anchoring the environment in earth-toned brick veneer whose modular tessellation provides rhythm and texture without overwhelming, balanced against the rich organic warmth of substantial wood furnishings and supple leather upholstery whose cognac and chocolate tones extend the analogous warm harmony while introducing tactile luxury. The integration of substantial greenery specimens positioned at strategic intervals introduces essential biophilic connection, softening geometric order with organic asymmetry and providing visual relief through chromatic contrast between warm earth tones and cool vital greens. The spatial organization suggests thoughtful consideration of circulation, sightlines, and social dynamics, creating intimate dining zones within the larger volume while maintaining visual connectivity across layered spatial planes that invite the eye to wander through atmospheric gradations from foreground clarity to background dissolution. One observes how the suspended spherical luminaires function as sculptural elements in their own right, their varied heights creating dynamic three-dimensional rhythm overhead that activates the upper spatial register while their opalescent glow provides gentle ambient fill softening shadows cast by more directional sources below. The marriage of industrial material honesty in exposed fixtures and structural expression with the cultivated comfort of upholstered seating and warm wood surfaces suggests a design philosophy valuing transparency and authenticity while refusing austerity, creating environments that feel both refined and genuinely welcoming. Viewers might contemplate how such spatial strategies shape contemporary dining experiences, transforming functional necessity into opportunities for sustained pleasure, social connection, and the simple but profound satisfaction of inhabiting thoughtfully composed environments where material, light, and form collaborate to honor human presence and everyday ritual.

Production Technology
The production technology for this project utilises a thoughtful combination of traditional and modern materials. The walls incorporate both old and new bricks, skillfully blending the textures to maintain heritage while introducing contemporary design. Three skylights are strategically placed to optimize natural light, reducing reliance on artificial lighting and enhancing the space’s energy efficiency. Bespoke metal panels and shelving with reeded glass are custom-designed, combining precision craftsmanship with modern manufacturing techniques.
Design Challenge
Through case studies and design analysis, this research explores how the arrangement of spaces influences occupant movement and the overall atmosphere. The findings provide insights into creating seamless, well-connected environments in hospitality settings. Additionally, the study addresses the challenge of selecting materials and wood treatments that comply with fire safety regulations without compromising the aesthetic integrity of the design, balancing safety and style effectively.
Project Duration
6 Months, Leicester Square, London UK
Operation Flow
Upon entry, guests are greeted by the bar, with rustic turquoise tiles and opal globe pendant lights casting a soft glow over the curved counter. The tunnel dining area, illuminated by pendant lights and reeded glass-boxed metal frames, offers intimacy. Under a large skylight, the main dining area is filled with natural light by day and glowing feature lights by night. Central banquette seating, surrounded by greenery, enhances privacy, complemented by brick walls and glass cylinder lights.
Research
The strategic use of space and layout in architectural design focusing on how different areas within a multi zone environment are organized to optimize flow and functionality. Specifically the research examines the integration of two distinct premises joined together investigating how their combined layout can enhance spatial coherence and user experience. By analysing the interaction between various zones such as bars, dining areas, and private spaces this study identifies key design principles that facilitate smooth transitions and maintain a sense of openness and connection.
Inspiration
The restaurant is located in the heart of the West End, in Leicester Square, London. The design is inspired by the creation of a calm space that evokes the feeling of being in an outdoor courtyard, offering an oasis amidst the surrounding hustle and bustle of one of London’s most vibrant tourist areas.
