About Zeit–los Spatial Light Installation

The Installation Zeit–los is a visual presence of the theme: locating time in space. Responsive Spaces created a generative light installation that fulfills several tasks in the client's workshop rooms: Recording time, background display at events, using the installation as a tool (timer, countdown or interactive hourglass) as well as individual color adjustment and an abstract display of real-time weather data for daily planning. The light installation can easily be controlled and adjusted by everybody with their mobile phone.

Zeit–los Spatial Light Installation by Responsive Spaces engages the venerable artistic lineage of light as sculptural medium, positioning itself within dialogues established by mid-twentieth-century investigations into perceptual phenomena and environmental luminosity while extending these inquiries through contemporary interactive and experiential frameworks. The installation demonstrates compositional rigor through its deployment of twelve linear fluorescent elements arranged in precise cruciform configurations across a gridded architectural field, the orthogonal geometry recalling both the reductive vocabularies of minimalist sculpture and the systematic spatial investigations of constructivist and De Stijl traditions where geometric purity served as vehicle for universal visual language. The work's technical accomplishment resides in its calibrated restraint, activating only the central fixture within the twelve-element matrix to create dramatic focal intensity against a field of dormant potential, this selective illumination establishing pronounced atmospheric gradation as brilliant cool-white radiance diffuses outward through the saturated blue environment, the light falloff creating concentric zones of luminous presence that soften the architectural enclosure into ethereal spatial ambiguity. The textured rear surface, rendered in deep cobalt to Prussian blue tonalities, provides both optical absorption and subtle reflectance, its granular physicality grounding the dematerializing effects of light while reinforcing the installation's investigation of perception, presence, and temporal experience. The compositional decision to orient each tubular element at precise forty-five degree angles generates dynamic visual tension, the diagonal vectors suggesting movement and energy while the perfect symmetry maintains meditative equilibrium, this duality between kinetic implication and static order inviting extended contemplation of how geometry and illumination collaborate to construct experiential space. The work appears to explore threshold states between visibility and invisibility, activation and dormancy, presence and absence, each unlit fixture existing as latent possibility within the architectural field, suggesting that the installation may transform over time through programmed sequences or responsive behaviors that alter which elements achieve luminous presence. One might observe how the singular activated crossing at composition center functions as both focal anchor and symbolic gesture, the X-form carrying rich associative resonances from crossroads to multiplication to the marking of significant location, while the surrounding dormant crossings establish rhythmic pattern and scalar context that amplifies the central element's intensity through relational contrast. The installation invites consideration of how contemporary spatial design practice integrates technological systems, architectural intervention, and phenomenological experience to create environments that transcend functional illumination, instead proposing light itself as primary medium for shaping perception, atmosphere, and the quality of human presence within constructed space, while the precise industrial materials and execution reflect design traditions valuing clarity, honesty of means, and the expressive potential of restrained formal vocabularies deployed with exacting attention to proportion, interval, and experiential consequence.

Unique Properties
Zeit-los is placed at a location where people meet, exchange ideas, work together, discuss and create new things: the client’s workshop rooms.. The installation picks up on this spirit and supports it with visualizations.

The Installation Zeit–los transforms the theme of time into visualizations. The visual approaches focuses on the aesthetics of time, the current time, working time and real time. These categories can be selected and color-adjusted using a remote control.n the working time category, the installation serves as an abstract workshop clock.

Production Technology
18 LED light tubes, indivudually developed mouting kit using steel cables
Design Challenge
This defined the arrangement of the lights and laid the foundation for the four modes of installation that were created (time, sign, stop and plan).
Project Duration
The first publication was on 25th of june 2024.
Operation Flow
Mobile application allows the users to operate the installation in real time. The app can be used to select the four visual modes, which in turn enable individual settings such as color settings or timings.
Research
Dealing with an unusual pixel arrangement or resolution enables abstract visualization approaches.
Inspiration
Emotional engagement with the topic of time. How can I use my time? How much is my time worth? Can time be planned? And how do I brand time in the colors of my company? All these big questions are answered in a simple and unmistakable way with this digital media installation. Unobtrusive and maximally usable.

Tic Tac - the pattern is created by the arrangement of the tubes and visually picks up on existing elements in the customer's premises.
