About Village Hall Public Multifunctional Building
The building intentionally avoids the vernacular architectural style, and applies modern materials and structure. A big floating roof unifies the formal and informal spaces in a simple way, like a giant open umbrella. In order to achieve the floating and light feeling, the big steel roof not only needs to overcome the large cantilevers and spans, but also needs to keep member as slender as possible. With several structural innovations, a hybrid structure mimics umbrella cantilevers are formed.
Youpei Hu's Village Hall Public Multifunctional Building emerges as a compelling meditation on the intersection of vernacular memory and contemporary structural innovation, positioning itself within a tradition of regionalist architecture that seeks to honor local building customs while embracing advanced engineering possibilities. The expansive pyramidal canopy, rendered in an intricate lattice of steel members, suggests both the protective umbrella of traditional agricultural structures and the sophisticated tensile geometries explored by twentieth-century masters of structural expressionism. The architect demonstrates exceptional sensitivity to material palette, juxtaposing the warm, living surface of Corten steel—which develops its distinctive rust patina through natural weathering processes—against the cool precision of the galvanized steel framework and the elemental solidity of exposed concrete structural supports. This material choreography speaks to themes of time, transformation, and rootedness, as the building literally absorbs and reflects its environmental conditions. The composition achieves remarkable balance between monumentality and approachability, with the sweeping roof gesture creating a sense of shelter and gathering while the open lattice structure maintains visual permeability and connection to the surrounding landscape. Particularly noteworthy is the integration of the stone retaining wall in the foreground, which employs traditional dry-stack or mortared river cobble construction methods, establishing a dialogue between ancestral building techniques and contemporary architectural expression. The twilight atmosphere captured in this representation heightens the building's presence as a landmark and beacon within its rural context, the warm internal glow suggested through the lattice openings hinting at the communal activities sheltered within. This work invites contemplation of architecture's capacity to embody collective identity while embracing the expressive possibilities of structural craft—how might buildings serve as bridges between inherited wisdom and emerging possibilities?

A hybrid structure mimics umbrella cantilevers - Design Challenge
- In order to realise the sense of floating of the big black roof, the building is structurally innovative. The roof, as an overall stress system, not only has to overcome the difficulties of large overhangs and spans, but also has to make each rod as slim as possible to maximise the sense of lightness and composition of the rod structure.
- Project Duration
- The project started in 2021 in China and finished in 2023 in China, and the project address is Xiangtang Village, Pukou District, Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province
- Operation Flow
- This is a public event centre building, capable of meeting the daily needs of meetings, exhibitions, receptions and other
meeting, exhibition, reception and other daily needs. - Research
- Based on the Grasshopper plugin extension tool on the Rhino platform, Karamba3D force analysis and form finding technology were used to explore the tools and paths suitable for architects to carry out structural form design in the scheme stage, and successfully completed the structural form design of asymmetric complex roof shapes.
- Inspiration
- In traditional Chinese housing, the main hall called ‘Ting Tang’ is the most important family space for public activities. It usually has a formal architectural gesture, with tall, dark and semi open space.
Inspired by this, the village center is considered as the ‘main hall’ for the whole village. Besides a multifunction hall for formal public activities, the building also provides lots of open spaces to encourage social interaction between villagers and tourists.
