About Atlas Multifunctional Bed

Atlas is a multifunctional bed designed for babies, children and teenagers. The bed is wide enough for a parent to sleep beside a child when needed. Atlas can be used with a bedside cradle during the newborn period, and later with attachable safety barriers that support both safety and independence. The bed is made entirely of oak wood and finished with a water based varnish that contains no lead. Edges and lines are rounded, and the slats are closely spaced. Rounded feet and a panel under the bed distribute weight evenly for long term use.

Within the tradition of child-centered design that emerged from progressive educational philosophies emphasizing autonomy and accessibility, Harun Ayaydın's Atlas Multifunctional Bed represents a thoughtful meditation on the transition from infancy to independent childhood. The work demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how furniture might serve not merely functional requirements but developmental aspirations, positioning the sleeping surface at a height that invites rather than restricts young occupants while protective railings offer security without visual imprisonment. The designer appears to engage with Scandinavian modernist principles that privilege honest material expression, allowing the natural beauty of oak to speak through refined but unadorned profiles, while the white lacquered elements provide a neutral canvas that harmonizes with diverse interior schemes. Compositionally, the piece achieves balance between horizontal repose appropriate to its sleeping function and vertical articulation that animates the form with visual interest. The slatted barrier system, with its carefully radiused spindles and curved corner transitions, reveals attentiveness to both safety standards and tactile experience, each element inviting small hands to grasp without risk of entrapment. The spherical feet introduce a note of geometric play that lifts the design from mere utility toward considered aesthetic statement. The surrounding environment, with its educational mural depicting global geography and natural wonders alongside a cosmic rug suggesting planetary systems, contextualizes the bed within a nursery conceived as a space of discovery and imagination. One might observe how the warm material palette creates psychological comfort while the clean geometries instill early appreciation for ordered form. The work invites consideration of how design for children might honor their emerging independence while providing the security essential to restful sleep and confident exploration.

Unique Properties
As a design form, it has a structure that includes people and gives confidence. It is large enough for families to sleep next to their children when necessary. It can also be used safely by mothers who use a bedside cradle during the newborn period. It can then be used with extra attachable safety barriers to help provide safety and comfort while supporting baby's independence. It can also be easily used in a teenager's room in the future.

Production Technology
The bed is made entirely of oak wood and the varnish on it is water-based. Since water-based polishes do not contain lead, they are suitable for baby/child use. We prefer hard and age-defying oak wood in our timeless design. There are no sharp, pointed edges or splinters. No more than 2 3/8 inches (about the width of a soda can) between crib slats so a baby's body cannot fit through the slats; no missing or cracked slats. No cutouts in the headboard or foot board so a baby's head cannot get trapped. Safe and long-term use is ensured as the weight is distributed evenly even when used by parents, thanks to the knobby feet placed with special dimensions and the mdf under the bed.
Design Challenge
The challenge at the beginning of the design was that the subject was a baby product and that the materials to be used would not harm the baby. The lead component found in furniture polish and adhesives was one of the factors that challenged us in the design. We solved this problem with water-based adhesive and polish products. We chose oak as raw material.
Project Duration
The project started in Istanbul in April-February 2023 and was completed in Istanbul in July 2024.
Operation Flow
It allows the newborn baby to sleep more comfortably with its mother and allows the child up to 15 squints to sleep physiologically comfortably. Its design is in soft colors and is compatible with all areas. It minimizes injuries to children with its rounded lines.
Research
Before starting the design, the design was started by doing research on the problem of babies having to stay with their mothers for a while after birth and then not sleeping in their own beds. The focus is on the mother and baby being able to use the bed from the first day, the places where the necessary equipment can be connected, and the child being able to use his own bed in the future. The design was considered to be child-friendly and ergonomic.
Inspiration
It is designed for our precious childs to have a long, quality and safe sleep with a single product. The bed design, whose ergonomics and proportions are considered so that the parent can sleep together, is formally arranged for the baby's comfortable and safe sleep.
