About Berkley Furniture
Berkley is a furniture collection that includes an end table, a coffee table, a corner table and a television stand. The collection is made of chipboard and steel tubing. Parts are joined by two-way screws and plastic screws at the top, so assembly is done by hand without tools. Fabric baskets can be folded for storage and placed in different positions. The flat pack format reduces shipping volume and cost. Shared components across the collection help keep production costs low. Clean lines give the pieces a minimalist appearance.
Modular shelving systems have emerged within contemporary furniture design as sophisticated responses to evolving residential needs, where spatial flexibility, material authenticity, and visual refinement converge to serve both practical storage requirements and aesthetic aspirations, and this particular configuration demonstrates notable accomplishment in balancing functional utility with compositional elegance through its deployment of contrasting materials and geometric repetition. The designer appears to have drawn upon established traditions of minimalist furniture design, particularly the legacy of mid-century practitioners who championed honest material expression and modular thinking, while adapting these principles to contemporary production methods and lifestyle patterns characterized by smaller living spaces, frequent relocation, and desire for personalization within standardized systems. The technical execution reveals considerable attention to proportional relationships, where shelf depths, heights between tiers, and the slenderness ratio of vertical supports achieve harmonious integration, avoiding both the heaviness that would dominate a domestic environment and the fragility that might compromise structural integrity or user confidence. The chromatic strategy proves equally considered, restricting the palette to warm walnut tones and cool charcoal grays that provide sufficient contrast for visual clarity while maintaining overall tonal unity, a restraint that allows the system to integrate into diverse interior contexts without asserting excessive presence. The incorporation of textile-fronted compartments alongside open display surfaces suggests thoughtful consideration of the dual human needs for both exhibition and concealment, recognizing that domestic life requires spaces of revelation and discretion, surfaces that invite arrangement of cherished objects and volumes that discreetly contain quotidian necessities. The modular nature of the system, evident in the varied configurations visible across the composition, speaks to contemporary values of adaptability and user agency, where furniture becomes not a fixed statement but a flexible vocabulary that inhabitants can reconfigure according to changing needs, seasonal preferences, or evolving aesthetic sensibilities. Light interaction has clearly informed the design development, as the interplay between solid wood surfaces that warmly reflect illumination, metal elements that crisply delineate structure, and textile panels that softly absorb light creates dynamic visual interest across different times of day and lighting conditions. One might observe how such furniture mediates between architectural scale and human scale, between the fixed dimensions of rooms and the intimate dimensions of personal objects, creating intermediate territories that domesticate space while maintaining openness and visual connection, and consider how these functional objects subtly shape daily rhythms, movement patterns, and the rituals through which domestic life unfolds.

- Production Technology
- The Berkley range of furniture is made entirely from chipboard and steel tubing, which ensures product quality while keeping production costs under control. To reduce the size of the package, the fabric baskets can also be folded for storage. The components of the entire range are connected by two-way screws and plastic screws at the top, making it easy to assemble by hand without tools.
- Design Challenge
- Ensuring stability and production costs while enabling tool-free assembly was the main challenge for this concept. As a solution, we used tougher steel tubes and chipboard to address stability issues. In addition, sharing components throughout the range was also a solution to reduce costs.
- Project Duration
- The project started in January 2024 and was completed in July 2024 in Shenzhen, China.
- Operation Flow
- The Berkley range of furniture is designed for quick assembly and disassembly. The whole structure can be easily assembled with a simple twist of the hand, ensuring stability without the need for complicated tools. Fitted with fabric baskets that can be placed in different positions depending on the use.
- Research
- Many companies prioritise low-cost products, which often means limited development budgets and cost-cutting at every stage. It is therefore a challenge to incorporate a tool-free installation concept into budget furniture. The aim of this concept is to demonstrate that tool-free installation concepts and financial gains can indeed coexist if the focus is on optimising design and production, even if the user's assembly experience is optimised and production costs are not increased.
- Inspiration
- The Berkley furniture series aims to simplify assembly by eliminating the need for tools. Recognizing that online furniture buyers often struggle with time-consuming and error-prone assembly processes, the design prioritizes ease and efficiency. Through hand-twisting to connect plates and steel tubes, the furniture achieves stability, durability, and enhanced storage capacity.
