About Inked Elegant Residential Apartment
Inked Elegant is a residential apartment interior design covering 96 square meters. The color scheme is based on the dark wood tones preferred by the owner and is composed of black, gray and white. Board and stretched leather fabric are combined with local wood texture to create an elegant atmosphere. The layout was rearranged to connect the living room, dining room and kitchen. The television wall extends across structural beams and columns to enlarge the sense of space. Box lights, wall lights and indirect light allow the mood to be adjusted.
Yu Xuan Lai's Inked Elegant Residential Apartment demonstrates sophisticated spatial intelligence within the trajectory of contemporary residential design that privileges material restraint and geometric clarity as expressive instruments rather than decorative excess, positioning this interior within broader conversations around minimalism, East Asian spatial philosophy, and the ongoing refinement of domestic environments as sanctuaries from visual overstimulation. The architectural intervention reveals notable compositional accomplishment in its orchestration of asymmetrical balance anchored by the commanding horizontal window treatment, a rhythmic linear screen that functions simultaneously as privacy mediator, light modulator, and sculptural focal element, its systematic repetition of slender horizontal slats creating visual texture and shadow play that animates the space throughout diurnal cycles while suggesting both computational parametric design methodologies and traditional shoji screen heritage reinterpreted through contemporary materials and precision fabrication. Chromatic sophistication emerges through the disciplined achromatic palette spanning luminous whites through graduated grays to profound charcoals, a high-contrast tonal architecture that privileges spatial legibility and material honesty while strategic warm accents in walnut wood tones and matte bronze metallic finishes prevent sterile coldness and introduce essential organic warmth, the palette evoking both Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetic restraint and Scandinavian hygge domesticity where reduction serves psychological comfort rather than austere formalism. Technical facility appears evident in the precision joinery visible in architectural elements, the seamless integration of concealed lighting systems within ceiling coffers creating even ambient illumination without visible fixtures disrupting visual calm, the careful alignment of vertical drapery panels framing the horizontal screen creating geometric counterpoint, and the sophisticated layering of spatial zones from foreground sculptural coffee table through middle-ground window seat to background study niche and passages suggesting deeper domestic realms, each zone maintaining visual coherence while serving distinct functional purposes. The window treatment itself represents a passage of particular accomplishment, transforming what could function merely as utilitarian light control into an architectural feature that becomes the spatial protagonist, its parametric rhythm creating visual interest without figurative representation and its mediation between interior sanctuary and exterior urban context embodying contemporary spatial challenges around privacy, connection, and environmental interface. Material diversity within overall restraint demonstrates curatorial intelligence: the sculptural coffee table combining cool stone, warm wood, and metallic elements establishes a microcosm of the larger material vocabulary, while soft upholstery textures invite tactile engagement and the textured area rug grounds the seating arrangement, formal choices serving the expressive end of creating domestic environment that supports contemplative living and mental clarity through visual reduction. The composition appears to explore questions around essential domesticity, investigating how much can be removed before a space loses warmth and human connection, celebrating negative space as active compositional element following East Asian spatial traditions where emptiness carries semantic weight, and inviting consideration of residential design as frame for daily rituals rather than stage for decorative display. One might observe how the careful calibration between geometric discipline and organic softness, between cool restraint and warm invitation, between architectural assertiveness and domestic comfort creates an environment that acknowledges both contemporary minimalist design discourse and enduring human needs for sensory variety and material warmth, suggesting that residential refinement emerges through careful balancing of opposing forces rather than dogmatic adherence to stylistic purity, and inviting viewers to contemplate what constitutes essential domesticity in contemporary life where visual complexity pervades exterior environments and interior sanctuary offers respite through deliberate calm.

- Production Technology
- By symmetry and extension to enlarge the sense of space, which integrates classical aesthetic consciousness, and with black, gray, white main color rendering crisp modern temperament. The TV wall breaks through the structural beams and columns and visually extends to the whole wall, presenting simplicity and rationality in black and stone. The master bedroom and bathroom also continue this design concept, presenting spatial integrity. The lighting uses box lights, wall lights and indirect light, which can be freely switched with the atmosphere, and the appearance and color can be integrated into the integrity of the space.
- Design Challenge
- There are many large structural columns and beams in this old house. For example, the living room has structural columns in the porch and TV wall. The former combines mirror shoe cabinet to achieve effective storage and amplification, while the latter breaks through visual limitations by the extension of stone and black door panel. In addition, the ceiling has a beam that runs through the whole room, which is used as the boundary between rooms in the private field, and the block of dining room and living room is cleverly cut out in the public field, and the ceiling of the dining room is selected to be flush with the girder, so as to contain the circuit and air conditioning pipeline of the whole room.
- Project Duration
- The project started in April 2022 and finished in February 2023 in Taiwan.
- Operation Flow
- The entrance porch removes unsuitable compartments, and the shoe cabinet is planned under and on both sides of sleeping bed to facilitate the use of access line. The moving lines in living room, dining room and kitchen are connected, and the kitchen is also shielded from the lampblack through the glass sliding door. The family can enjoy the communication together in public block. The private area is separated from the storage room and connected to the public toilet line for access to cleaning supplies. The owner expects that the master bedroom can enjoy the comfort of hotel, therefore, taking the activity line as consideration, the spare parts cabinet is set up, a low TV wall cabinet is planned to connect the simple makeup table, the wardrobe is set on the side of the main bed, and the black glass door is used to give the sense of privacy. In addition to the wardrobe, the children's room needs to have sufficient space for books and desks.
- Research
- The design scheme focuses on the optimization of pattern and the balance of adjusting the proportion of each space, so that the dynamic line and function are then restructured to create a more in line with the use of habits, which is more spacious and perspective of the home environment. For example, the dining area is changed to a smaller dining table according to the house, thus giving more space to the living room vision, and removing the porch compartment to increase the transparency of public area.
- Inspiration
- The old layout allowed the dining room to be hidden in the walkway, the public blocks could not be easily connected by moving lines, and the air conditioning and ventilation were hindered, as well as the uneven distribution of space in each room. By rearranging the pattern, leveling the wall, breaking through the restrictions of beams and columns, enlarging the sense of space, and boldly integrating the dark color of the owner's preference, to create a stable and personal style of home space.
