About Mysterious Office Lounge
Mysterious is an office lounge designed for a real estate branch in Hsinchu, Taiwan. The 176 square metre office clearly separates work, negotiation, reception and leisure areas, which previously overlapped. A lounge bar at the rear serves leisure, activities and meetings, and includes a tea area with a shelf for cups. Curved walls, dark tones and soft lighting recall the calm of night. Artistic paint, Italian terrazzo counters, tiles and painted iron express layers of black, while a cream meeting room supports focused discussion. Seats with storage keep documents close at hand.
Yu Xuan Lai's Mysterious Office Lounge exemplifies the sophisticated synthesis of commercial functionality and residential warmth that characterizes the most compelling contemporary hospitality and workplace environments, demonstrating how rigorous spatial planning, material curation, and above all masterful lighting design can transform utilitarian program into evocative atmospheric experience. This interior composition engages the evolving design discourse surrounding work-life integration, the humanization of professional environments, and the hospitality-inspired workplace movement that has redefined office culture over the past two decades, drawing upon precedents in boutique hotel lounge design, craft cocktail bar aesthetics, and the material restraint of minimalist residential interiors while avoiding the clinical coldness sometimes associated with strictly modernist vocabularies. The compositional achievement of this space resides primarily in its sophisticated manipulation of light and shadow, establishing dramatic tonal contrast that recalls both baroque chiaroscuro painting traditions and the theatrical environmental lighting of contemporary restaurant and retail design, the careful orchestration of multiple illumination sources including recessed ceiling fixtures, linear pendant array, sculptural arc lamp, and concealed linear LED systems creating layered luminosity that models space, defines circulation, highlights functional zones, and establishes mood through warm color temperature and controlled intensity. The technical execution demonstrates refined understanding of how illumination defines spatial perception, the warm amber glow suggesting approximately 2700-3000 Kelvin color temperature creating inviting warmth that counterbalances the severity of the dark architectural envelope, the specific positioning of pendant luminaires above the bar counter providing task illumination for functional activities while simultaneously contributing to the overall ambient luminosity, the floating halo effect beneath the cantilevered counter achieved through concealed linear LED strips dematerializing mass and creating the illusion of levitation that adds subtle drama to an otherwise straightforward horizontal form. Material selection reveals sophisticated restraint characteristic of high-end contemporary design, the near-monochromatic palette dominated by deep charcoals and warm illuminated zones allowing material textures and subtle tonal variations to register with clarity, the natural wood flooring introducing organic warmth and tactile authenticity that grounds the composition in sensory accessibility, the probable leather or quality synthetic upholstery of the pneumatic bar stools suggesting comfort and durability appropriate to commercial hospitality applications, the vertical ribbing or fluting on the bar front adding textural interest and rhythmic detail that rewards closer inspection while maintaining overall compositional coherence. The spatial configuration demonstrates intelligent programming for social interaction and functional service, the three bar stools positioned at comfortable intervals suggesting intimate conversation scale rather than crowded communal gathering, the cantilevered counter depth appearing sufficient for dining or laptop work accommodating contemporary multi-use expectations, the background wall dissolving into darkness creating spatial mystery and suggesting continuation beyond the visible frame rather than claustrophobic enclosure, the overall proportions calibrated to human scale creating approachable intimacy rather than intimidating monumentality. This work invites consideration of how designed environments shape human behavior and emotional response, how the careful calibration of light and shadow can create sanctuary within potentially anonymous commercial contexts, and how material authenticity and atmospheric warmth might counterbalance the increasing virtuality and abstraction of contemporary work culture, encouraging viewers to contemplate their own relationships to place, comfort, social ritual, and the sensory dimensions of daily experience within built environments.

- Unique Properties
- The layout challenges the standard planning of Yungching Realty by introducing a distinct relaxation zone in the rear. This area features a lounge bar that functions as a multi-purpose space for leisure, activities, and VIP meetings. As the most unconventional element in the design, it reflects the owners' vision of a non-traditional office environment. Curved forms, dark tones, and lighting effects are used to create a dynamic atmosphere, bringing the energy of a night party into the workplace.

- Production Technology
- Artistic paint is used to create the dark atmosphere, and Italian terrazzo countertops, tiles, and painted iron pieces are also used to express the different levels of black, with the light to freely change the atmosphere, which create a sense of comfort and stability. The chair is extended against the curved wall, and the irregular sofa and bar chairs are added to relax the body and immerse in the sense of space. And the VIP meeting room requires a small area, thus the cream colors could create a space to focus on discussion.
- Design Challenge
- There were a number of designers to compete together for this case, and Ching I Shen stood out with a fresh concept, who found out the pain points of the real estate industry, and effectively solved. The standard space appearance of Yungching Realty has long affected all levels, through this case which demonstrates a model in the framework breakthrough, and the number of visitors, turnover, employment, and employee well-being, have all been improved. Because of the good space image, it also enhances the trust with the landlord, indicating the importance of a good space design for the overall business operation.
- Project Duration
- The project started in December 2023 and finished in April 2024 in Taiwan.
- Operation Flow
- The leisurely lounge area is equipped with sufficient seats to accommodate all partners, and also provides a space for communication between branches. Some seats are equipped with storage function to store the data given to customers, whose the moving line is easy to access in the store. The bar in the middle island is equipped with a tea area, and the background wall is equipped with a shelf to place cups, which is convenient for dining and tea.
- Research
- The most important goal of this design is to improve the working environment of real estate agents, provide a good space to eat, rest, and have meeting, and also provide a private space where customers can make offers. The lounge area is a bold leap away from the past image, taking the dark night as the design concept, and the lamps gently projecting like the dim moonlight, to help release pressure, so that the partners who stay in the company for a long time can have a temporary breathing space.
- Inspiration
- Yungching Realty Inc. is a Taiwanese real estate brand, and this Hsinchu branch is run by three young owners aiming to change its traditional image. The original space combined office, negotiation, reception, and leisure areas, which often overlapped, creating a sense of instability. The new design clearly divides the areas, separating their functions, and emphasizes the leisure space to offer a comfortable environment for the high-pressure work of the agents.
