About Pillzzle Children's Medicine Packaging
Pillzzle is a medicine packaging design for children. Each board holds four pills, and every pill is linked to one puzzle piece. When the four pieces from the same board are joined, they form a complete animal shape. Parents can tear off a single puzzle-shaped section along the marked lines, separate the top layer, open the aluminum foil and give the pill together with the puzzle piece as a reward. The package is made of plastic, aluminum foil and TPU. The collection system is intended to make children more willing to follow a course of treatment.
Yichi Chen's Pillzzle Children's Medicine Packaging represents a thoughtful intervention within the specialized domain of pediatric pharmaceutical product design, where the designer addresses the persistent challenge of medication administration to young children through an innovative integration of packaging, dispensing mechanism, and post-consumption play value that extends the product's utility beyond its primary pharmaceutical function. The design demonstrates sophisticated understanding of child psychology and developmental needs, recognizing that anxiety and resistance surrounding medication can be substantially reduced when the administration ritual incorporates elements of play, discovery, and agency, allowing the young patient to participate actively in their own care through the engaging process of assembling the puzzle-based dispensing system. Formally, the packaging achieves notable clarity through its geometric precision and restrained chromatic palette, with the warm golden yellow providing both practical visibility in medical contexts and psychological associations with sunshine, happiness, and positive energy that help establish an optimistic rather than clinical emotional framework around the medication experience. The structural engineering reveals considerable technical sophistication in the flat-pack design that balances economic efficiency, shipping logistics, and environmental sustainability while maintaining sufficient structural integrity to protect pharmaceutical contents and support the mechanical requirements of the puzzle-dispensing system, suggesting thoughtful consideration of the complete product lifecycle from manufacturing through distribution to end-use and eventual disposal or component reuse. The animal forms serve multiple simultaneous functions within the design system, operating as immediately recognizable and appealing figures that capture children's attention and imagination, as structural components of the dosing mechanism that ensure proper measurement and administration through their assembly requirements, and as enduring play objects that continue to provide value long after the medication has been consumed, thereby reducing waste and extending the positive associations formed during the treatment period. The typography and iconographic system demonstrate clear adherence to accessible design principles, ensuring that caregivers can quickly comprehend usage instructions while the visual language remains sufficiently playful and inviting to engage the intended pediatric audience. Within the broader context of contemporary healthcare design, this work participates in important conversations around patient experience, particularly for vulnerable populations who may lack agency in medical contexts, demonstrating how thoughtful design intervention can transform necessary but potentially distressing experiences into opportunities for positive engagement, learning, and empowerment. The integration of Scandinavian minimalist design vocabularies with practical pharmaceutical requirements suggests the designer's awareness of international design traditions that prioritize user welfare, functional transparency, and material honesty, while the puzzle mechanism itself draws upon long-established educational toy traditions that use play as a vehicle for developing fine motor skills, spatial reasoning, and sequential thinking. How might this approach to transforming pharmaceutical packaging into engaging educational objects inform broader design strategies for making healthcare more accessible, less frightening, and more empowering for pediatric populations?

- Unique Properties
- This is a medicine package design based on the characteristics of puzzles games. A board have four pills, each pills corresponds to a piece of puzzle, all the puzzles on the same board put together can create a complete cute animal. Parents can make a deal with their kids: for every pill they take, they get a piece of the puzzle. This reward system helps to enhance children's medication experience, make child more willing to cooperate with the treatment and relieve family stress.

- Design Challenge
- 1. In the design process, the most difficult thing for us is to conceive the small animal shape on the pills board. For personal design style, we hope that when the puzzles from the pills board are put together, they can create a small animal full of geometric sense, but also meet the aesthetic experience of children, without losing cuteness and color. In addition, when the puzzle is scattered on the pills board, we also hope that it can roughly form a harmonious and regular rectangle to achieve a coordinated aesthetic feeling. Based on this, we conducted a lot of research and sketch deduction. We first investigated and summarized many animals and their characteristics. Second, we kept sketching on paper to try to divide their shape into four parts and geometrize them, and to arrange them into a rectangle with as few gaps as possible. In this way, after the selection of some animals was excluded, we selected three animal puzzle styles with the best visual effect with each other based on how the puzzle looks when they‘re put together. 2. The packaging design of the pills board is also a difficult point. Because our design is the main entry point clever, so we do not want to use ordinary packaging mode. After many investigations, we chose the present effect, which can make it easier for people to open and close and integrate the instructions into the package.
- Project Duration
- The project started in August 2024 in Zhengzhou and finished in September 2024 in Beijing.
- Operation Flow
- 1. The child gets sick and needs to take medicine for a period of time according to the treatment course. 2. According to the tear marks on the medicine board, parents tear off a piece of puzzle-shaped medicine board with a single pill. 3. Separate the top puzzle layer of the board, tear the aluminum foil, and take out the pill. 4. Give child the pill and reward him with a puzzle to collect. 5. Kid put all the puzzles from the same pill board together to get a cute animal puzzle. (The specific reward agreement can be flexible by parents)
- Research
- Our main research program is the pills board design for kids, the goal is to improve the medical experience in children's treatment course through emotional design, so that kids are less resistant to taking medicine. In design process, we conducted interviews and surveys, and decided to start from the perspective of "collection and reward mechanism". After a large number of desktop and second-hand research, we got the prototype of the current project, and further analyzed many cases for further improvement. We also used hard cardboard with high gram weight for prototype testing, and made the designed jigsaw to verify the feasibility. This study can effectively improve children's medical experience, relieve parents' pressure, promote doctor-patient relationship, and create a more caring social medical environment for kids.
- Inspiration
- We observed that most of kids had the experience of not taking medicine well with the treatment course. Moreover, we also found that kids are often attracted to specific color and shapes, fun interactions and progressive reward mechanisms. Based on these phenomenon, we redesigned the package of the medicine, breaking away from the traditional cold and impersonal package, and incorporated puzzle games and cute animal shape that kids enjoy, trying to use an innovative way to reduce kids' fear of medicine, shifting their attitude, making them less resistant to taking medication.
