About Micro and Macro Residential Apartment

Micro and Macro is a residential apartment interior of 88.5 square meters, planned for a family of four. All six surfaces of the space are treated as one composition, so each wall reads smoothly on its own and the whole remains in harmony. Ceiling beams and columns divide the areas naturally, and their edges are rounded with arcs to soften the view. Circular forms, brown and white tones and warm yellow lighting create a calm atmosphere. Storage is integrated into the entrance cabinet, the sofa wall and the dining cabinet.

Woo Ta Chuan's Micro and Macro Residential Apartment demonstrates sophisticated spatial orchestration within contemporary interior design practice, where the integration of functional requirements and aesthetic aspirations achieves notable synthesis through carefully calibrated material relationships and proportional systems. The work positions itself within ongoing conversations around residential spatial efficiency, the integration of media technology within domestic environments, and the pursuit of serene material palettes that resist stylistic ephemerality in favor of enduring visual satisfaction, engaging traditions of modernist spatial clarity while inflecting them with softer material textures and warmer chromatic choices that acknowledge the psychological needs of residential occupation beyond purely formal concerns. The compositional achievement rests significantly in the successful navigation of horizontal emphasis without monotony, accomplished through subtle variations in panel width, the strategic insertion of vertical elements including the fluted column and open shelving that provide rhythmic counterpoint, and the layered depth created by projecting and receding planes that prevent the dominant wall from reading as flat despite its predominantly two-dimensional treatment, while the neutral palette demonstrates chromatic sophistication through its careful gradation of warm tones that create gentle transitions rather than stark contrasts, each material selection contributing to an integrated whole where wood warmth, mineral coolness, textile softness, and reflective blackness establish dialogue rather than compete for attention. The technical facility evident in the execution, from the precise reveals between wall panels suggesting skilled joinery or installation, to the seamless integration of lighting within architectural elements, to the apparent custom dimensioning that allows the media aperture to align harmoniously with surrounding cabinetry, speaks to accomplished collaboration between design vision and craft realization, each detail resolved with attention that serves the larger experiential goal of spatial serenity and functional clarity. Thematically, the work appears to explore the contemporary domestic interior as a space of retreat and restoration, where visual calm supports psychological ease, where storage solutions become architecturally integrated rather than applied afterthoughts, and where the omnipresent screen—that portal to digital connection—finds physical framing that domesticates its presence, neither celebrated as technological spectacle nor apologetically concealed, but rather incorporated as one element within a larger composition of daily living, the open shelving beside it offering space for personal objects and meaningful artifacts that individualize the otherwise restrained aesthetic framework. The spatial organization invites consideration of how contemporary residential design negotiates between openness and definition, the floor plan suggesting continuous flow between zones while architectural elements including the white column and differentiated ceiling planes provide subtle thresholds that articulate distinct territories within unified space, supporting varied domestic activities from media viewing to conversation to circulation without requiring physical barriers, this permeability reflecting evolving domestic patterns while the material restraint and neutral palette provide visual cohesion across functional zones. One might observe how the composition rewards both immediate apprehension—the instant sense of calm order and material quality—and sustained attention, as longer looking reveals layered relationships between elements, the thoughtful sizing and spacing decisions, the interplay of concealment and display in the storage solutions, and the subtle variations within seemingly uniform surfaces, inviting viewers to consider how residential environments might balance the desire for visual serenity with the requirements of daily life, storage, technology integration, and personal expression, achieving spaces that feel both designed and inhabitable, both visually resolved and open to the improvisations of lived experience.

Unique Properties
Starting from the facade, the designer presents all six sides of the space in a comprehensive manner, and the sight converges naturally at the junction of each wall. When viewed individually, all sides flow smoothly, and when viewed as a whole, they are in harmony with each other. Using the beams and columns of the ceiling to naturally divide the space field, and decorates the edges and angles of the beams and columns through the arc to resolve the geomantic problem again, making the vision more soft.

Design Challenge
Before the design of dining area, considering the young age of the owner's children, the need to place cameras to look after the young children, and the owner has the habit of collecting vintage wines, the designer will integrate the line outlet and food preparation storage into the dining cabinet, which is not only convenient to use, but also can keep the table clean, and reserve the glass display space next to provide the owner to display and store wines. Besides, the outer frame of the original cabinet is packed to integrate the overall sense of space. At the same time, the woodworking method is used to make the end of edge more secure. The whole is like the textured mini bar, supplemented by tea mirror and white wooden grille, so that the space line can spread to the kitchen and connect the kitchen space.

The inside is put into a shoe cabinet, and the outside is used as a vestibule cabinet to strengthen the multiple functions of vestibule. Furthermore, the wooden grille and stone grain of TV wall, as well as the stone brick of the inked landscape painting with sofa back wall of the leather cloth, with the sofa cabinet and drawer of half waist are not only artistic but also have the function of storage, while broadening the vision of sofa back wall, and make the living room look more tidy.
Research
The original house had four rooms, but to accommodate the owner's desire for a larger master bedroom and a dressing room for his wife and two young daughters, the designer reconfigured the layout. The bedroom door was repositioned, and a sliding door was added between the dressing room and the master bedroom, creating a more organized and functional flow. This design ensures an easy transition from dressing room to bedroom while enhancing the mood for sleep. For Feng Shui considerations, the bed was placed against a wall with extended fabric accents and a grey wall panel with silver trim, adding softness to the space.
