About Art of The A9 Cover Design

The Art of A9 speaker cover invites exploration of nature's rhythm, Istanbul's fluidity, and the interplay of sound's undulating waves. Drawing inspiration from the ceaseless motion of the sea and unseen sound waves, modern geometric forms and a serene color palette capture this dynamic flow. More than a sound source, the speaker is elevated to a work of art, unifying auditory and visual experiences.

Deniz Erciyas's Art of The A9 Cover Design engages with enduring traditions of geometric abstraction and biomorphic form exploration that have animated visual culture since the early twentieth century, when artists and designers began liberating shape and color from representational obligation to investigate pure formal relationships and chromatic interactions as vehicles for aesthetic experience and emotional resonance. This circular composition demonstrates sophisticated command of the geometric abstract vocabulary, deploying irregular organic shapes, fluid curves, and rectilinear passages in a carefully orchestrated arrangement that achieves dynamic equilibrium without resorting to symmetry or predictable patterning. The chromatic palette reveals particular accomplishment in its modulation of temperature relationships and saturation levels: warm cadmium orange and red-orange passages provide energetic focal points and chromatic excitement, while cooler periwinkle, aqua, and sage green passages offer atmospheric breathing space and visual rest, all suspended within generous fields of pale neutral tones that function as activating negative space rather than mere background. The color relationships suggest understanding of Josef Albers's investigations into simultaneous contrast and chromatic interaction, where adjacent hues modify perception through optical mixing and perceptual relativity, while the soft-edged transitions in certain passages evoke the atmospheric color field explorations of mid-century abstraction. Edge treatment demonstrates strategic variation, with crisp boundaries asserting shape clarity where compositional emphasis demands it, and softer dissolved edges creating spatial ambiguity and perceptual intrigue elsewhere, this alteration of definition inviting the eye to move through the composition discovering relationships rather than consuming the image instantaneously. The circular format itself carries historical resonance, from Renaissance tondo paintings to Constructivist circular compositions to contemporary design's renewed engagement with the circle as both formal device and symbolic container, the round boundary creating centripetal visual force that draws attention inward while simultaneously establishing the composition as a bounded universe, complete and self-sufficient. The presentation format elevates the work beyond conventional graphic design display, mounting the circular composition upon three elegant tapered legs that position it sculpturally within space, engaging the viewer not merely optically but bodily and architecturally, creating presence and commanding spatial attention in ways that wall-mounted graphics cannot achieve. This dimensional strategy suggests dialogue with furniture design traditions, particularly mid-century modern's interest in refined supports and elegant structural solutions, while the smooth circular form echoes decorative art objects and ceremonial drums or shields, creating cultural associations that extend the work's resonance beyond pure abstraction into anthropological and ritualistic territories. The outdoor waterfront installation documented here establishes productive tension between the geometric precision of the design and the irregular organic forms of natural landscape, the work's controlled chromatic relationships and crisp shapes contrasting with atmospheric haziness and irregular shoreline, while the color palette's blues and greens find echoes in water and foliage, creating visual harmony between designed object and environmental context. Thematically, the composition invites contemplation of balance, flow, and relationship—the way disparate elements can coexist within bounded space achieving harmony through thoughtful arrangement rather than forced uniformity, how chromatic temperature and tonal value create spatial suggestion and emotional atmosphere within purely abstract formal language, and how simple geometric vocabularies can generate visual complexity and sustained interest through subtle variation and sophisticated orchestration. The work seems to celebrate playfulness within rigor, intuition within structure, organic irregularity within geometric order, suggesting that abstraction serves not as escape from meaning but as liberation into multiple meanings, where viewers bring their own associations and emotional responses to activate the formal relationships the designer has carefully composed. One might observe how the flowing curved forms suggest natural phenomena—water currents, wind patterns, organic growth—while maintaining clearly designed rather than naturally occurring character, this productive ambiguity between natural inspiration and deliberate construction inviting reflection on design's mediating position between human intention and natural order, between controlled making and organic becoming.

Production Technology
Pen and paper take priority in the creative process, which led to starting the Art of A9 cover with hand-drawn sketches. An experimental approach was taken by cutting out shapes and positioning them on the surface of the speaker. Afterward, the design was converted to vector format and redrawn using Illustrator. Given the circular surface of the speaker, precise adjustments were required to ensure proper alignment. Following the provided guidelines, the design was finalized digitally and shared with the B&O team.
Design Challenge
In this special project, it was a challenge to create a beautiful, stylish, and sculptural design while incorporating various light and color tones across different architectural styles—each more elegant than the last, appealing to diverse tastes. The goal was to design something that people could gaze at repeatedly without feeling boredom, bringing them joy. I began the project with great excitement and focus, and all the difficulties I encountered were soon forgotten once the design was completed.
Project Duration
The project commenced in September 2022 on a global scale, with its completion in December of the same year. The covers were then exhibited and made available for sale in June 2024.
Operation Flow
An image is created that transcends the walls, transporting us into nature. As the world evolves and we increasingly spend time in cities and homes, the idea was to bring us back to that natural world through both the unique sounds of music and the visual impact of art. The intention was to capture the essence of the wave, the sun, the green, and the natural flow of life within geometric forms. Given that the audience possesses a 'designer spirit,' is inspired by design, and has a heightened awareness of the environment and nature, it is aimed to convey the sounds, colors, and scents of nature through this work.
Research
Music transports me to another world, where endless dreams are created, allowing me to feel free, independent, and truly original. Drawing and designing evoke the same emotions, nourishing my creativity. The two practices reinforce and support each other, giving me the sensation of being lost in the abstract, surrounded by colors in another dimension—an incredibly fulfilling experience.
Inspiration
The aim is to create something distinctive in a world where similarity often prevails, enabling individuals to discover their unique colors and originality while reminding them of their inherent uniqueness. Designs with a soul are intended—simple yet vibrant and joyful creations, personalized rather than narrated. The ultimate purpose is to touch people's hearts, souls, and consciousness.

Grand Interview about Art of The A9 Cover Design

In the A9 cover design, my approach to balancing functionality with artistic expression was to treat natural rhythms and geometric forms as complementary elements. While the technical structure of the speaker introduces certain constraints, I viewed those limitations as a framework that guides creativity rather than restricts it.I intentionally combined soft, organic lines that represent natural flow with sharper geometric shapes that convey structure and modernity. This allowed me to create a surface design that is visually striking, gives the product its own identity, and still harmonizes with the speaker’s physical integrity and acoustic performance. To achieve this balance, every detail—from the color palette to the relationship between forms—was thoughtfully crafted to support both the user experience and the visual narrative.

The A9 cover design draws heavily from the fluidity of Istanbul and the rhythmic movement of sound waves, both of which had a profound influence on my creative process. Istanbul’s constant flow—its shifting lights, layered histories, and movement between continents—inspired the organic, flowing forms in the design. At the same time, the visual language of sound waves guided the dynamic curves and the sense of motion embedded in the composition. To capture these elements in the final design, I combined soft, continuous lines with structured geometric shapes, creating a balance between natural movement and modern precision. I also relied on a carefully curated color palette to evoke the city’s atmosphere—from its calm tones to its vibrant energy. Layering, rhythm, and contrast were key techniques, helping me translate both the emotional and physical essence of Istanbul and sound into a cohesive visual expression.

In developing the A9 cover design, the transition from hand-drawn sketches to digital vectors played a crucial role in refining the visual language of the artwork. My initial sketches were intentionally loose and organic; they allowed me to explore fluid forms without constraints and to capture the spontaneous rhythm I wanted the design to convey. When I moved into the digital phase, the challenge was to preserve that organic quality while enhancing precision. I used vector tools not to rigidify the forms but to clarify them—maintaining the natural curves, subtle imperfections, and movement from the original sketches. This process allowed the design to evolve while still retaining the authenticity and softness of the hand-drawn lines.Ultimately, this combination of freehand exploration and digital refinement shaped a final piece that feels both modern and human, balancing expressive spontaneity with clean, contemporary geometry.

Celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Bang & Olufsen A9 significantly shaped my approach to the design. This milestone called for a visual narrative that honored the heritage of the A9 while also reflecting its forward-looking spirit. I wanted the artwork to acknowledge a decade of iconic craftsmanship, timeless form, and emotional connection—elements that have made the A9 more than just a speaker. At the same time, I aimed to infuse the design with a sense of renewal and evolution. By blending contemporary color harmonies, fluid forms, and modern geometric structures, I created a piece that pays tribute to the A9’s legacy while signaling its ongoing innovation. The balance between familiarity and freshness became the guiding principle, resulting in a design that feels both celebratory and future-oriented.

In the A9 Cover Art design, my goal was to create a visual bridge between modern geometric aesthetics and the calming presence of nature. Achieving this balance required a series of intentional design decisions. I began by incorporating organic, flowing shapes inspired by natural forms—waves, wind movements, and fluid contours—then pairing them with clean geometric structures to maintain a contemporary visual language.I carefully controlled the rhythm between these two worlds: the organic elements introduce softness and motion, while the geometric components provide clarity, stability, and a modern edge. The color palette also played a crucial role; I selected tones that evoke natural environments but kept them refined and minimal to preserve the modern feel.Together, these choices allowed the final design to feel both grounding and sophisticated—immersing the viewer in a sense of nature while remaining true to a sleek, contemporary aesthetic.

In designing the A9 Cover Art, I aimed to create a piece that could complement diverse architectural styles while staying engaging over time. To achieve this, I combined clean geometric structures—ideal for modern and minimal interiors—with subtle organic movements that add depth and keep the viewer’s attention. I also chose a balanced, neutral color palette so the design can integrate seamlessly into different spaces without losing its character. This approach allowed the artwork to feel both adaptable and visually intriguing.

The color palette was chosen to visually express both sound and movement. I selected tones that convey rhythm—soft gradients for fluidity and deeper accents for dynamic impact. Each color was intended to echo the feeling of sound waves: shifting, expanding, and interacting with their surroundings. By keeping the palette balanced and harmonious, the colors support the overall concept of blending natural motion with a modern aesthetic, creating a design that feels both lively and refined.

My experience with music played a significant role in shaping the visual language of the A9 Cover Art. Because I have a personal connection to rhythm, flow, and the emotional dynamics of sound, I naturally approached the design with a musical mindset. I tried to translate the way music moves—its crescendos, pauses, and subtle transitions—into visual forms. The flowing lines, layered structures, and rhythmic patterns in the artwork mirror the sensations I associate with listening to music. Instead of depicting sound literally, I aimed to express its energy and emotion visually. This personal relationship with music guided the balance between structure and movement, helping the final design feel both harmonious and alive.

The A9 cover design resonates strongly with the A’ Design Award jury thanks to its refined balance of geometric clarity and modern abstraction. Its harmonious color palette and the way the composition flows naturally across the circular surface showcase a thoughtful integration of form and function. The design maintains a strong visual presence in different environments, demonstrating contextual versatility. By blending organic curves with architectural geometry, it creates an engaging narrative quality that feels both contemporary and timeless—an aspect highly valued by the design community and the jury alike.

From my perspective, the A9 cover design demonstrates how visual art can meaningfully merge with sound, setting a direction for future loudspeaker aesthetics. As sensory elements continue to blend, I believe future developments will move toward designs that not only complement acoustics but actively enhance the listening experience through form, color, and spatial rhythm. This integration will likely push designers to create covers that communicate the character of the sound—whether through abstract patterns, material textures, or dynamic visual structures. Ultimately, I expect speaker covers to evolve into expressive interfaces where visual identity and acoustic performance are inseparable, offering users a richer and more immersive sensory interaction.
