About Unico Multifunctional Wine Stopper

Unico is a multifunctional wine stopper redefining wine accessories with six integrated features. In addition to being a drip-free pourer, flow reducer, and instant wine aerator, it introduces three exclusive innovations: Easy Open for effortless use, Safety Stop to prevent spills, and an NFC enabled stand for access to ever-evolving wine-related content. Produced via SLS 3D printing, it allows rapid customization, even for small batches, ensuring unique designs with fast production times.

Within the evolving landscape of contemporary tableware and barware design, Mauro Di Girolamo & Tommaso Marzolini's Unico Multifunctional Wine Stopper represents a thoughtful contribution to the discourse surrounding functional objects that negotiate the intersection between utilitarian necessity and aesthetic consideration, positioning itself within traditions that honor material integrity and formal restraint while addressing the quotidian ritual of wine preservation with sensitivity to both practical requirements and sensory experience. The designers demonstrate considerable technical sophistication in their orchestration of proportional relationships, establishing a tripartite formal structure that evokes architectural precedents where base, shaft, and capital create visual and functional articulation, here translated into the conical insertion point, the threaded collar mechanism, and the handled upper body, each zone materially and texturally differentiated to communicate its specific role within the object's operational logic while maintaining overall formal coherence through shared geometric language and cylindrical vocabulary. The chromatic restraint evidenced in the near-monochromatic palette of cool neutral grays punctuated by the crisp white threading section suggests alignment with minimalist design philosophies that privilege clarity and legibility over decorative complexity, allowing the object's essential form and material character to communicate without rhetorical excess, a strategy that resonates with Scandinavian design traditions emphasizing democratic accessibility, honest material expression, and the beauty inherent in purposeful simplicity. Particularly noteworthy is the designers' attention to haptic qualities and tactile experience, evident in the ribbed grip band that introduces rhythmic surface variation inviting secure handling, the matte coating that suggests pleasant tactile engagement, and the strategic placement of horizontal slots that enhance grip security while introducing formal counterpoint to the dominant vertical axis, these details revealing sensitivity to the embodied dimension of object use and the importance of tactile satisfaction in everyday interactions with designed artifacts. The threaded collar mechanism, rendered in contrasting white that may suggest food-safe silicone or technical polymer, demonstrates precision engineering with clearly defined helical grooves that communicate both technical competence and functional reliability, the material and color differentiation serving to demarcate the insertion interface from the handling body, a design decision that enhances usability through visual clarity while creating formal interest through material juxtaposition. The object's modest scale and vertical emphasis suggest consideration for storage efficiency and visual discretion when inserted in bottle necks, avoiding the sculptural monumentality that might render the stopper visually dominant or spatially intrusive, instead proposing a design presence characterized by quiet confidence and understated elegance that complements rather than competes with the vessels it serves. One might observe how this design invites reflection upon the potential for everyday functional objects to embody aesthetic values and design intelligence without sacrificing practical efficacy, suggesting that careful attention to proportion, material selection, surface treatment, and ergonomic refinement can elevate utilitarian artifacts into modest ambassadors of design excellence that enrich daily experience through their presence and performance, and consider how such objects participate in broader cultural conversations about sustainability, longevity, and the value of investing in well-designed tools that serve their purposes with grace and reliability over extended lifespans.

Production Technology
Unico was developed through an iterative design process combining advanced engineering, digital fabrication, and user-centered research. Produced via SLS 3D printing, it integrates PA12 nylon, food-grade silicone, stainless steel, and neodymium magnets for durability and performance. 3D printing enables rapid customization, even for small batches, allowing unique designs tailored to specific needs. All this is complemented by NFC integration, enhancing interactivity and making Unico a wine stopper bridging tradition and innovation.
Design Challenge
The project was conceived with the ambition of integrating all the most sought-after functions in the industry into a single tool. Its functional complexity and intricate geometries were made possible through laser sintering 3D printing.
In addition to reducing production waste by over 40% compared to traditional manufacturing methods, this technology is the only one capable of creating the complex internal geometries that would otherwise be impossible to achieve.
Project Duration
Born in Florence in December 2023, the project was recognized among the best Italian design projects of 2024 by the ADI Design Index, earning a nomination for the Compasso d’Oro 2026. It was exhibited at the ADI Design Museum in Milan and Spazio WeGil in Rome between October and November 2024. Unico is also the winner of the 2025 Global Design Awards in Hong Kong. Developed through extensive research and innovation, it embodies a balance of functionality and aesthetics, setting a new standard in contemporary design and redefining the user experience.
Operation Flow
Once applied to the bottle, Unico opens and closes with a simple half-turn, allowing pouring without removal. The same motion resets it if the Safety Stop is activated. During pouring, it instantly aerates the wine. After use, a 180-degree turn allows full disassembly for deep cleaning, even in the dishwasher. Its interactive stand acts as both a support and a gateway to expertly curated, AI-enhanced wine content, simply by bringing your smartphone close.
Research
The research began with a market analysis to understand wine enthusiasts' needs and accessory limitations. The goal was to create a multifunctional stopper without compromising aesthetics or practicality. Using an iterative approach with tests and simulations, we optimized design and functionality. Surveys, sommelier interviews, and user testing validated comfort and efficiency. The integrated NFC enhances interactivity, impacting product innovation and functional design evolution.
Inspiration
Unico is not only an elegant synthesis of innovation but a tribute to the essence of wine itself. Inspired by its deep cultural heritage and the rituals of sharing, Unico enhances both the serving and tasting experience while fostering the exchange of knowledge and stories about wine. Every design choice reflects the fluidity and refinement of wine, blending tradition and technology into a seamless interaction that connects people through a shared passion.
