About Renaissance Urban Regeneration

Renaissance seeks the rebirth of a forgotten suburb, deprived of memory, and marked by unhappy episodes. The design concept will restore to the city of Pescara two spaces, besides the restyling of the existing park, a new square will be brought to life by the void created by the demolition of three dilapidated buildings where the architecture of the 70s forms the setting. The circular fountain and the unarranged trees will characterize the design of the square. The design also includes innovative techniques and sustainable materials such as pervious concrete for the surfacing.

GIACINTO FABA's Renaissance Urban Regeneration emerges from landscape architectural traditions that privilege ecological infrastructure as the generative framework for urban public space, positioning this plaza design within contemporary discourse surrounding climate-adaptive urbanism, green infrastructure networks, and the therapeutic value of accessible canopy coverage in densely populated residential districts, the compositional achievement rests substantially in the elegant calibration of geometric order and organic vitality, where the systematic deployment of circular tree wells establishes legible spatial structure without imposing rigid formality, each raised planter functioning simultaneously as botanical habitat, seating edge, and visual punctuation within the broader paving field, the rhythmic repetition of these circular elements creating a grid-like organizational logic that guides pedestrian movement while preserving spatial porosity and visual permeability across the plaza expanse, the chromatic strategy demonstrates sophisticated restraint, limiting the hardscape palette to warm neutral tones that recede visually, allowing the diverse green registers of the plant material to command foreground attention, this hierarchical color deployment reinforces the design's evident priority, positioning living systems as primary rather than ornamental, while the encircling residential architecture provides essential spatial definition without competing for visual dominance, rendered in cool grays that establish contextual presence while maintaining tonal subordination to the central landscape, the central fountain element, though modest in scale, functions as compositional anchor and symbolic reference, evoking plaza traditions extending from Roman forum design through Renaissance civic squares and twentieth-century Scandinavian pedestrian precincts, yet the fountain's understated circular form and integration within the broader tree-planting pattern suggests contemporary reinterpretation rather than historicist quotation, the design seems to explore fundamental questions animating current landscape architectural practice: how might urban public space prioritize ecological function alongside social gathering, how can hardscape infrastructure support rather than dominate plant growth, what spatial configurations enable both programmatic flexibility and coherent aesthetic identity, and how does generous tree canopy provision alter the experiential quality and environmental performance of dense residential neighborhoods, the scattered human figures, rendered at scale suggesting approximately 1:50 or 1:75 representation, activate the space with implied social programming while their diminutive presence emphasizes the primacy of landscape structure over individual occupation, suggesting a democratic public realm designed to accommodate diverse uses and users without prescribing specific behavioral scripts, the elevated viewpoint selected for this visualization invites consideration of how design legibility operates across scales, revealing organizational clarity comprehensible from prospect while suggesting intimate human-scaled experiences would unfold at ground level beneath the tree canopies, viewers might contemplate how this regenerative urban strategy negotiates the perpetual tension between control and growth, geometric order and organic process, immediate construction and long-term ecological maturation, and how such designs propose hopeful visions for urban futures where built density and landscape vitality coexist in carefully choreographed balance.

Unique Properties
The dilapidation of the built space in the future square and the neglect of the natural space in the Speranza park reflect the current state of the intervention area. The aim is to redevelop the area, restoring dignity and value to the 60s and 70s Pescara housing, with the design of a square and the restyling of the existing park. At the centre of the square, in the shape of concentric circles, a fountain as a beating heart, surrounded by trees, including native species, that change with the seasons. While the restoration of the park aims to develop a green lung, making it a visiting card.

Production Technology
Innovative techniques and sustainable materials in the realization of the project. The pavement in the centre of the square as well as the path of the park are made of pervious concrete, to facilitate the discharge of rainwater and reduce the summer temperature. The pervious concrete is a mixture composed of cements, water, additives and sand free aggregates in the right proportions. While the remaining part of the square is in combed concrete. Elettronic Interface Led technology has been used to manage the remote control and dimming of the lighting system of the project for energy saving.
Design Challenge
Renaissance represents the rebirth of a forgotten suburb, devoid of memory and marked by various vicissitudes. The challenge has been to restore sociality, affection and value through this design. The urban planning variant thus allows a transformation from a residential area to a public space, a place of meetings and regeneration. The restyling of the area, the wise use of pervious concrete and the enhancement of the prior park, restore dignity and a future, transforming abandonment into a renewed promise of life.
Project Duration
The project started in June 2021 in Pescara and ended in November 2021 in Pescara
Operation Flow
The operation takes shape through the demolition of three dilapidated buildings. The transformation takes place by way of an urban renovation project that includes both the creation of a square and the restyling and restoration of an existing park. Interaction develops between residents and non residents, thanks also to the proximity of sports facilities. A good result is obtained both by improving human relationships and enhancing environmental beauty by planting new trees. The design implements a process that optimizes space and promotes sociality.
Research
Historical analysis and local testimonies have not revealed citations for the design of the square. Indeed, the project’s inspiration was the metaphor of the stone falling into the water. The metaphor gave rise to an idea that supports the business of the project and the sociality of the square as a meeting place and interactions between residents, becoming a point of aggregation for the community. In a different way, in the park the historical analysis brought to light traces of Gothic plots, highlighted in the design with alleyways transversal to the lengthways path.
Inspiration
The design idea of Renaissance, in the future square, a place devoid of memory, is inspired by the stone which, falling into the water, generates concentric waves. As the waves propagate, so circular areas with trees and shrubs develop in the square, giving life and dynamism to the environment. For the park, on the other hand, the inspiration originates from the Gothic plots of the ancient maps, represented in the project by small paths transversal to the lengthways path, which generate an effect of movement and connection.
