About The University Square Lawn

The University Square is a landscape design for a university campus in Hong Kong. An underused area was transformed into a pedestrian friendly lawn and open space of 2,200 square meters, measuring about 60 by 36 meters. The lawn forms a central meeting point and improves circulation between campus blocks. Two existing mature trees are kept as focal points and framed by custom timber deck seating that was hand crafted on site. The two tier decks support informal gathering, rest and large campus events.

Campus Development Office's Lawn exemplifies contemporary landscape architecture's capacity to orchestrate outdoor spaces where natural elements and built forms achieve harmonious integration serving both functional and symbolic purposes within institutional settings. This designed landscape demonstrates sophisticated understanding of spatial hierarchy, material contrast, and chromatic composition, the expansive lawn plane functioning simultaneously as visual foreground that establishes human-scaled accessibility, circulation corridor enabling pedestrian movement across the campus precinct, and symbolic common ground embodying ideals of shared space and collective experience within educational environments. The compositional achievement centers on the skillful balance between horizontal repose and vertical aspiration, the verdant carpet extending generous welcome while the architectural ensemble, particularly the distinctive cylindrical tower with its rhythmic banding of reflective glazing and solid cladding, provides vertical punctuation and visual terminus that organizes the spatial experience and creates legible wayfinding through memorable form. The chromatic sophistication evident in the analogous blue-green palette punctuated by warm earth tones suggests intentional design coordination between landscape and architectural elements, the lawn's vivid viridian establishing vital life presence while the cerulean and azure glazing creates visual continuity with the sky vault overhead, these cool tones grounded by the terra cotta and burnt sienna masonry that anchors the composition in material substance and historical building traditions. Technical execution demonstrates high maintenance standards in the turfgrass management, the uniform texture and consistent saturation indicating optimal growing conditions, appropriate species selection for the climate and use patterns, and regular care regimens that sustain aesthetic quality while accommodating the pedestrian traffic inevitable in such settings, the lawn's pristine condition functioning as visible manifestation of institutional stewardship and investment in environmental quality. The spatial organization reveals sophisticated landscape architectural thinking about transitions between building and landscape, the lawn extending outward from the building threshold creating generous approach zones that mediate between intimate human scale and monumental architectural scale, while the strategically positioned deciduous trees provide vertical elements at intermediate scale that facilitate perceptual transition, offer seasonal variation through foliage changes, and create microclimate amelioration through shade casting. The symmetrical tree placement flanking the central tower suggests formal design intent related to axiality and emphasis, the bilateral arrangement reinforcing the compositional center while maintaining openness that preserves sightlines and visual access, the design potentially evoking landscape traditions wherein allées, formal plantings, and geometric layouts express institutional order and intellectual clarity. The atmospheric conditions captured, with brilliant sunlight, dynamic cloud formations, and clear air quality, contribute to the sense of vitality and optimism the space projects, the weather suggesting those ideal conditions when outdoor spaces most effectively fulfill their promise as venues for gathering, recreation, contemplation, and the casual encounters that characterize vibrant institutional life. One might consider how this landscape architecture negotiates the complex demands placed upon contemporary campus open spaces, balancing aesthetic aspiration with practical durability, formal dignity with informal accessibility, and symbolic representation with everyday functionality, inviting reflection on the role designed landscapes play in shaping institutional identity and facilitating the human experiences that constitute educational community.

Production Technology
The usual preference for large empty space in campus setting, leans toward constructing academic or research related facilities, but through reimagining the existing plaza and surrounding space, the design creates a 2,200 s.m. pedestrian-friendly lawn and open area that enhances circulation around Block M and the Library Area. This redefined the value of open space in academic environment, as the space will not only provide a serene retreat for relaxation and reconnection with nature but also to accommodate large-scale events for the PolyU community and visitors, such as Flag raising ceremonies, Graduation ceremonies, Information Day, academic fairs to cultural celebrations. These events serve as a welcoming and dynamic showcase for campus life, and strengthens PolyU's reputation as a forward-thinking and inclusive institution.
Design Challenge
To minimize disturbance to the daily operation of the campus, the bulk of the construction is compressed into the summer holiday period. This limited window of time is further squeezed as Hong Kong faced some of the heaviest rainfall in the past 50 years during 2023 summer. The design and construction team had implemented a phased approach, with more flexible working schedules to ensure the PolyU Community can continue to their operations smoothly and the pedestrian flow around the site is seamless.
Project Duration
The project started in March 2023 and completed for Grand Opening in October 2023.
Operation Flow
The lawn celebrated highlight the two existing veteran trees, integrating them into the design with new timber sitting decks to create popular gathering spots. The custom made deck seating with its irregular shaped decks, is hand-crafted and constructed on site. This approach not only preserved the trees as focal points that encourage the community to sit and interact, but also its warm timber tones add a touch of artistry to the space, making it visually striking. The two tier deck also allow for flexibility in terms of use, and allow users to interact and form different types of engagement. This thoughtful integration of heritage and modernity sets a new paradigm in campus design, enhancing the sense of community and fostering a deeper connection between people and place.
Research
The design team conducted a thorough observation of the younger generation's behavior and identified a key trend: they enjoy being seen and engaging in social interactions within public spaces. To cater to this preference, the team reimagined the existing plaza, transforming it into a vibrant, open space that fosters connection and visibility. The new design features expansive, tree-lined deck seating areas that are both inviting and functional, encouraging people to gather, relax, and interact. The open layout ensures that the space feels inclusive and accessible, while the strategically placed seating under the trees provides a blend of shade and comfort. This thoughtful redesign not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the plaza but also aligns with the younger generation's desire for spaces where they can socialize, be seen, and feel a sense of community. The result is a dynamic, welcoming environment that bridges functionality with modern social trends.
Inspiration
The design concept is to balance the site's natural heritage and introduce the PolyU community of a new social interaction mode, to see and to be seen. This bold design solution represents a new paradigm in campus design, enhancing the sense of community, and strengthen connection between nature.
