About Branching Lounge Chair
Branching is a lounge chair inspired by the growth of tree branches. The frame is made of aluminum alloy and shaped by CNC machining. The seat and backrest are made of elm wood, formed by CNC machining and handwork. Bolt connections join the parts, so the chair can be taken apart and packed flat for transport. Finite element analysis was used to refine the thickness and balance of the metal supports. Seat height, seat depth and backrest angle follow ergonomic data. Branching suits homes, galleries and office waiting areas.
Wei Jingye / 魏靖野's Branching Lounge Chair emerges from contemporary furniture design's ongoing meditation on the productive tensions between natural morphology and human craft, between structural necessity and sculptural expression, situating itself within a lineage of designers who have sought to translate organic principles into functional domestic objects that transcend mere utility to achieve aesthetic and conceptual resonance. The work appears to engage with mid-twentieth-century Scandinavian furniture design's foundational principles, particularly the Nordic emphasis on natural material celebration, ergonomic sensitivity, and the integration of craft tradition with modernist formal reduction, while simultaneously demonstrating awareness of more recent computational design methodologies that enable complex curvilinear forms and structural optimization previously unachievable through traditional hand-craft alone. The compositional architecture of the chair reveals sophisticated formal intelligence, with the branching support system functioning simultaneously as structural necessity, visual metaphor, and sculptural gesture, the Y-shaped bifurcation suggesting tree morphology while efficiently distributing load forces from seat through two ground contact points, this dual functionality exemplifying the designer's integration of engineering logic with poetic formal expression. The chromatic accomplishment resides in the designer's evident selection of wood stock for its exceptional grain beauty and warm golden tonality, the natural figuring creating subtle visual movement across surfaces while the warm amber palette establishes immediate sensory associations with natural materials, daylight, and organic warmth, qualities that contribute to the chair's approachable rather than austere presence despite its bold sculptural character. Technical facility manifests throughout the execution, from the seamless joinery where structural members converge and diverge to the refined surface finishing that balances tactile smoothness in contact areas with preservation of natural wood character, from the precise carved contours of the backrest shell that suggest careful consideration of human anatomical requirements to the confident sculptural gesture of the branching legs that demonstrate both structural understanding and formal courage. The work seems to explore enduring questions within furniture design regarding the balance between object presence and use value, between furniture as sculptural statement and furniture as supportive infrastructure for daily life, the Branching Lounge Chair appearing to propose that these need not be opposed categories through its integration of ergonomic functionality within a form that commands attention as aesthetic object even when unoccupied. Thematically, the design invites contemplation of humanity's relationship with natural forms and materials, the branching structure functioning as clear reference to tree morphology while the crafted wooden surfaces speak to human transformation of natural material through skill and intention, this dialogue between natural origin and cultural refinement resonating with broader contemporary discourse around sustainable material practices and biophilic design principles. The chair may reference historical furniture traditions where natural forms inspired design vocabulary, from Thonet's bentwood explorations to Carlo Mollino's surrealist organic furniture to contemporary digital fabrication's enabling of complex curvilinear geometries, positioning itself within ongoing conversation about how technology and craft intersect in contemporary making. One might observe how the chair's branching morphology creates visual rhythm through repetition of diverging forms at different scales, while the contrast between the fluid organic contours and the geometric regularity of the surrounding architectural context establishes productive formal tension, and consider how furniture functioning simultaneously as functional support and sculptural presence enriches domestic spatial experience, transforming utilitarian seating into opportunity for daily aesthetic encounter and material appreciation.
Press Kit
- Unique Properties
- The Degenerate Lounge Chair explores the tension and balance between natural organic forms and modern industrial logic. The core design element lies in the abstract extraction of the logic of tree growth, simplifying the complex natural branching into a powerful metal frame that supports the warm, solid wood seat. The piece blends the warm texture of solid wood with the cool, dynamic metal, presenting an upward-growing modern industrial aesthetic that interprets modern craftsmanship's tribute to and reconstruction of natural vitality.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- 520 mm × 600 mm × 760 mm. Finite element analysis was used during the design process to optimize the thickness and center of gravity distribution of the metal support, ensuring a lightweight visual effect while maintaining extremely high stability. The product features a detachable structure design, significantly reducing carbon emissions during transportation and reflecting a sustainable design philosophy.

- Production Technology
- The main frame is made of aluminum alloy and manufactured using CNC machining technology. The seat and backrest are made of high-quality elm wood, shaped through CNC machining and handcrafting. Bolt connections are used at the joints, ensuring the chair's smooth curves while also accommodating mass production and convenient flat packaging.
- Design Challenge
- The biggest challenge was maintaining the visual appeal of the slender branches while ensuring their load-bearing safety as a seat. By repeatedly refining the structural nodes and connection details, the stress relationship and connection logic between the metal frame and the solid wood panels were clarified, making the overall structure both lightweight and safe.
- Project Duration
- It will begin in Shenyang in January 2025, and the prototype will be completed and produced in June 2025, and then exhibited at the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts Museum in Shenyang.
- Operation Flow
- The cascading lounge chair is suitable for modern home spaces, galleries, or upscale office waiting areas. Its design strictly adheres to ergonomic data, with precise control over seat height, seat depth, backrest angle, and support curves to conform to the contours of the back and hips, providing stable and comfortable support and enhancing comfort during extended use. The warm texture of the natural wood contrasts sharply with the precision craftsmanship of the metal structure, achieving a balance between natural aesthetics and rational construction.
- Research
- This study focuses on how to use parametric tools to simplify and refine traditional biomimetic furniture. By analyzing the relationship between the branching angle of tree branches and gravity support, it seeks the optimal solution between artistic expression and industrial manufacturing. This research successfully transforms complex organic forms into detachable structures, solving the bottleneck problems of logistics and mass production in biomimetic furniture.
- Inspiration
- The design draws inspiration from the phototropic growth of tree branches in a forest. It captures the dynamic moment of branches stretching and supporting each other, transforming this into a structurally sound language. Through digital refinement, the originally random natural forms are transformed into a geometric language that aligns with modern aesthetics and industrial production. The chair's form, based on minimalism, incorporates biomimetic lines, aiming to inject a flowing life energy into the otherwise cold interior space.
