About Serenity Residential
Serenity is a residential interior design for a family apartment of 118 square meters. The entrance is centered on natural marble veining, which forms a discreet and elegant focal point. Solid wood, water-stained oak, engineered quartz and natural stucco shape a warm interior, and the stucco helps control humidity for energy efficiency. Low-formaldehyde and low-VOC materials were selected. A versatile hub serves both work and play, while a separate quiet room offers privacy. Open paths and abundant natural light support shared family life.
Pohui Lin's Serenity Residential demonstrates the spatial and atmospheric aspirations of contemporary residential design at the intersection of international minimalism and materiality-focused modernism, reflecting a design philosophy that prioritizes experiential serenity through architectural restraint, luminous openness, and carefully curated material palettes that speak through texture and tone rather than ornamental elaboration. The integration of cooking, dining, and living functions within a flowing open-plan configuration represents a now-established paradigm in urban residential design, wherein spatial generosity and visual continuity take precedence over compartmentalized room divisions, fostering domestic flexibility and social connection while maintaining functional zoning through subtle architectural gestures—here achieved through the multi-level ceiling soffit that hovers above and defines distinct activity areas without imposing visual barriers at eye level, and through the strategic positioning of the substantial stone-clad media wall that anchors the living zone while preserving sightlines through to the window wall beyond. The compositional achievement of the work resides in its successful negotiation of competing formal demands: the need for spatial openness balanced against the intimacy required for dwelling; the desire for material presence balanced against visual lightness; the accommodation of diverse domestic functions balanced against compositional coherence and aesthetic unity. The chromatic restraint demonstrates sophisticated color orchestration, wherein the analogous palette of warm neutrals—ranging from cooler gray-beiges through warmer honey-toned wood and cream—creates gentle thermal gradients that enliven surfaces without chromatic distraction, while the selective deployment of darker accents in matte black window frames, charcoal chair frames, and the deep gray countertop provides tonal anchoring and contrast that sharpens spatial definition. The technical facility evident in the meticulous detailing—seamless cabinetry integration, precise joinery, the elegant curved ceiling element that introduces organic movement into orthogonal geometry, the layered lighting strategy combining recessed ambient illumination with vertical accent lighting and abundant natural daylight—speaks to refined execution and design resolution. The fenestration strategy, centering the composition on floor-to-ceiling windows that dissolve the boundary between interior sanctuary and exterior urban environment, embodies a persistent modernist aspiration toward transparency, light, and connection with the world beyond while maintaining domestic enclosure and privacy through selective window treatments that modulate exposure. The material vocabulary—blonde wood flooring suggesting warmth and natural resonance, pale stone with sedimentary texture suggesting geological time and elemental substance, soft neutral textiles suggesting comfort and domesticity, matte black metallic accents suggesting precision and contemporary industrial refinement—achieves textural diversity within chromatic consistency, inviting haptic imagination and material contemplation. Thematically, the space explores contemporary ideals of dwelling characterized by simplicity, order, luminosity, and the integration of aesthetic refinement with functional pragmatism, suggesting that domestic well-being emerges through spatial clarity, material quality, abundant natural light, and environments that support both social gathering and solitary repose. How might such carefully orchestrated domestic environments shape daily rituals, influence states of mind, and cultivate particular relationships to light, material, time, and the elemental acts of cooking, eating, resting, and dwelling together?

- Design Challenge
- Creating this space was a deep challenge balancing the husband's love for warm, earthy tones and soft textures with the wife's taste for sleek sophistication and neutral shades. Their contrasting preferences pushed our creativity to its limits. We found harmony through a gentle palette of beige and white, using materials with varied sheen, textures, and grains to subtly bridge their visions. Cultural ideals called for a nurturing home, and spatial limits demanded openness. Thoughtful flow design ensured smooth transitions, encouraging extended family moments in a graceful, adaptable retreat.
- Project Duration
- The project started in July 2024 in Hsinchu, Taiwan and finished in Feburary 2025.
- Operation Flow
- This home feels like stepping into a quietly luxurious hotel, yet it embraces you with the warmth of a familiar home. Soft colors and textures—cozy for the dad, sleek for the mom—shift effortlessly as a toddler plays and a newborn grows. It moves naturally: a living area transforms into a dad’s workspace or kid’s play spot, with open paths inviting family chats and playful moments. The open layout brings everyone together, while a private room evolves with the newborn, offering calm. It shines by blending luxury and comfort, deepening family bonds, and staying inviting—outstanding for its heartfelt, adaptable charm.
- Research
- Our research explored family life through in-depth talks with the husband and wife. We aimed to balance his love for a warm, cozy home with her taste for sleek sophistication, designing for a toddler and newborn. We watched daily routines, sketched layouts, and used 3D software to test spaces. Close dialogue revealed their ideal haven. Results showed muted colors and layered finishes unified their styles, with a flexible area for work, play, and a future room for the newborn, ensuring privacy. Insights showed open layouts boost family bonds and well-being. This inspires sustainable, adaptable homes, enhancing society’s harmony and business innovation.
- Inspiration
- The design feels like a heartfelt journey, weaving the husbands dream of a cozy haven with the wifes taste for refined elegance, clashing over bold colors versus soft shades and warm textures versus sleek finishes. We found harmony in a gentle palette of muted tones and layered textures, shaping a home for a toddler and newborn due in six months. Inspired by family closeness, it offers a warm hub where the husband works and the toddler plays, beside a quiet room for the newborns future, ensuring peace.
