About Tangent Pendant Light

Tangent is a pendant light designed for architectural spaces. The form is based on geometric patterns created from circles and their tangents. Each pattern can be adapted to the character of a space or shaped according to user preference, so the dimensions vary by project. The body is made from an extruded aluminium profile that is bent into the chosen pattern. An LED light is fitted inside the profile. The top cap and the diffuser are laser cut and attached to the body. The aim is a tailored lighting solution for each interior.

Within contemporary lighting design discourse, Seyed Shahriyar Shahriyari's Tangent Pendant Light emerges as a compelling meditation on the intersection of sculptural form and functional illumination, positioning itself within lineages of organic modernism and parametric design exploration that seek to dissolve conventional distinctions between utilitarian object and aesthetic statement, the work appears to engage with long-standing design questions about how lighting fixtures can transcend mere instrumental function to become spatial protagonists that define and articulate architectural environments through both physical presence and luminous projection. The formal achievement demonstrates sophisticated compositional intelligence, the elongated horizontal orientation establishing visual connection with contemporary preferences for linear lighting that extends across rather than descends into space, while the serpentine undulation introduces organic vitality that prevents the design from reading as purely geometric or mechanistic, the dual circular terminals function as both structural necessity and sculptural punctuation, their generous scale providing visual weight that anchors the horizontal extension while their perfect geometry offers counterpoint to the flowing curves of the connecting ribbon, this interplay between rectilinear extension and circular concentration suggests deep engagement with fundamental geometric vocabularies that have animated design exploration across cultures and centuries. The chromatic and material strategy reveals considerable technical facility and aesthetic discernment, the stark contrast between absorptive matte black upper surface and emissive warm cream underside creating dramatic tonal architecture that reads clearly from distance while rewarding closer examination, the blackened upper plane suggests powder-coated aluminum or similarly refined industrial finish, its uniformly matte quality denying specular reflection and thereby emphasizing form through silhouette and edge definition rather than surface incident, while the luminous underside clearly incorporates sophisticated LED technology with exceptional diffusion engineering, the absence of visible point sources or banding artifacts indicating careful attention to optical design through edge-lighting, rear-mounted arrays with precision-engineered diffuser panels, or similar technical solutions that achieve the coveted goal of sourceless glow, light appearing to emanate from the material itself rather than from discrete bulbs or diodes. Thematically, the work invites contemplation of how contemporary design navigates between competing imperatives of functional performance, formal beauty, material honesty, and spatial integration, the Tangent Pendant Light appears to propose that these concerns need not exist in tension but can achieve synthesis when design thinking operates holistically, integrating structural logic, electrical engineering, manufacturing feasibility, and aesthetic aspiration into coherent unified statements, the biomorphic curves suggest engagement with organic precedents while the geometric terminals and linear extension maintain connection to rationalist modernist traditions, this productive tension between natural inspiration and geometric order has animated decorative arts and design across epochs, from Art Nouveau's whiplash curves to mid-century organic modernism to contemporary parametric explorations. The fixture's horizontal orientation and wavelike modulation may evoke various cultural and natural references, the sinuous path suggesting possibilities as diverse as calligraphic brushstrokes in Eastern artistic traditions, the elegant curves of marine creatures moving through water, mathematical investigations of minimal surfaces and geodesic paths, or simply the universal human pleasure in following flowing lines through space, the suspension system's minimal visibility reinforces the sense of the fixture as floating sculptural presence rather than mechanically dependent object, an effect that imbues the work with almost magical quality as though the ribbon of light suspends through levitation rather than prosaic cables and ceiling mounts. How might this elegant synthesis of form and function, opacity and luminosity, geometric order and organic flow, invite viewers to reconsider their assumptions about what lighting fixtures can achieve beyond mere illumination, and what possibilities emerge when designers approach utilitarian objects as opportunities for sculptural poetry and spatial narrative?

Production Technology
After determining the desired pattern based on the functionality and spatial needs of each project or user preferences, the extruded body profile undergoes the bending process. The LED light is then installed inside the profile. Following this, the top cap and diffuser are laser-cut and attached to the body. This process ensures that each component fits precisely, providing a seamless and efficient lighting solution tailored to the specific requirements of the space.
Design Challenge
The challenges of this process include creating unique patterns that are both functional and visually striking. Additionally, transforming two-dimensional patterns into large-scale lighting products posed its own difficulties.
Finding the best solution for manufacturing these designs while maintaining their visual and functional integrity was a key challenge, ensuring that the final product would meet both aesthetic and technical requirements.
Project Duration
Conceived in July 2024, this innovative lighting concept was developed over six months in Vienna, Austria, by January 2025.
Operation Flow
This design interacts simultaneously with both the environment and the user. The pattern can either be directly designed by the user or created to suit a specific space. Additionally, this customization capability aligns with the functional needs of the space, enhancing its architectural synergy. By allowing users to personalize the design, the lighting solution fosters a dynamic relationship between the space, its purpose, and the people who inhabit it.
Research
In designing this product, we explored geometric principles and graphic patterns, ultimately drawing inspiration from the work of Swiss graphic designer Armin Hofmann.
Using his principles, we developed a series of patterns specifically suited to our space. We analyzed the challenges of constructing patterns derived from the tangent connections of circles, which guided us through the detailed design and manufacturing process of the lighting fixtures.
For the body profile, we optimized the design using aluminum extrusion, ensuring a perfect fit for the top aluminum cap, bottom diffuser, and adequate space for LED installation. After testing the models in various spaces with different architectural requirements, we found that this product not only interacts with its primary user but also serves as an essential element for designers and architects, contributing significantly to the identity of the space.
Inspiration
Inspired by Armin Hofmann’s geometric studies, our lighting design explores the connection between circles and their tangents. This approach enabled us to create adaptable patterns that respond to both the spatial context and the objects they illuminate. By refining these patterns for both form and function, we enhance the interplay of light and shadow, enriching the atmosphere while ensuring that the design is both aesthetically pleasing and functionally effective in the space.
