About Frames Of Memory Apartment

Frames of Memory is an apartment interior design located in New Taipei City, Taiwan. The 100 square meter home includes a master bedroom, two secondary bedrooms, a living room, a multifunctional dining area, a kitchen and two bathrooms. North American neoclassical elements are reinterpreted for a contemporary Asian residence. A custom 1 to 4 paneling system is built with moisture resistant foam boards suited to the humid local climate. A dark toned foyer, a retractable kitchen door and full height built in storage support privacy, order and daily comfort.

Chen Yu Ching's Frames Of Memory Apartment exemplifies contemporary residential design's sophisticated engagement with transparency, material refinement, and spatial layering as primary compositional strategies for creating environments that balance openness with intimacy, visual connectivity with functional zoning, and architectural clarity with atmospheric warmth. The work participates in longstanding modernist traditions that privilege honest material expression, spatial flow, geometric order, and the elimination of superfluous ornament in favor of carefully calibrated proportion, refined detail, and the intrinsic beauty of well-chosen materials thoughtfully deployed, a lineage extending from early twentieth-century European modernism through mid-century international style developments and continuing into contemporary minimalist practice informed by global design discourse. The architectural achievement here resides particularly in the strategic deployment of reeded glass as both freestanding partition and integrated storage facade, a material choice that addresses the perennial residential design challenge of maintaining spatial generosity while articulating functional boundaries, the vertical striations fragmenting direct sightlines while allowing light transmission and preserving a sense of visual connection between adjacent zones, a solution that demonstrates sensitivity to the psychological importance of both openness and enclosure in domestic environments. The compositional intelligence evident in the careful alignment of architectural elements, furniture placement, and lighting fixtures creates clear visual axes and rhythmic relationships that guide movement and organize experience, the perspective recession drawing attention through layered spatial thresholds toward the luminous background storage wall, while the sculptural brass pendant fixture establishes a compelling focal point that anchors the middle-ground dining zone. Chromatic restraint demonstrates sophisticated color sensibility, the predominantly cool neutral gray foundation providing calm visual temperature that allows the warm wood tones of the dining table and the brass lighting fixture to register as intentional thermal accents, while the translucent glass panels introduce subtle luminosity without chromatic assertion, an overall palette that suggests quietude, clarity, and contemplative atmosphere conducive to the restorative functions residential space ideally provides. The lighting design reveals layered thinking about how illumination shapes spatial experience across different times of day and use scenarios, the prominent pendant fixture offering both functional task lighting for dining activities and ambient glow that establishes welcoming atmosphere, while the translucent background panels suggest borrowed light from adjacent spaces or integrated illumination, creating gentle luminous presence that dematerializes the storage wall and extends perceived spatial depth. Material vocabulary throughout emphasizes refined surface quality and precise fabrication, from the mirror-polished floor tiles that reflect and multiply architectural elements to the finely striated glass panels that display consistent modulation of transparency, from the richly figured wood grain of the dining table to the smooth upholstery of the seating and the brushed finish of the metallic hardware, every material choice contributing to an overall impression of careful curation and quality consciousness. The built-in display niche carved into the left wall demonstrates thoughtful integration of storage and presentation functions, the horizontal shelving offering opportunity for personal expression through displayed objects while the architectural framing maintains visual order, a gesture toward the inhabitants' presence and individual taste within the designer's controlled compositional structure. One might observe how the work negotiates between architectural assertiveness and inhabitable warmth, between the clarity of minimalist reduction and the comfort necessary for daily domestic life, achieving a balance that neither sacrifices spatial sophistication to conventional coziness nor prioritizes aesthetic rigor at the expense of livable functionality. The transparent and translucent thresholds invite consideration of how contemporary domestic space increasingly values visual connectivity and flexible zoning over the cellular compartmentalization characteristic of earlier residential planning traditions, reflecting evolving patterns of household life, changing expectations of privacy and openness, and growing appreciation for light-filled environments that maintain connection to multiple adjacent spaces simultaneously, allowing inhabitants to feel both individually focused and part of larger household presence.

Production Technology
This design was realized through precise on site measurement and meticulous proportion control. A 1 to 4 paneling system was custom built with moisture resistant foam boards, ideal for the climate of Taiwan. KD eco friendly PP boards ensure durability and low emissions. Every material and joint was carefully selected to balance aesthetics and longevity, while iterative modeling and close client collaboration shaped the design into a refined, livable space.
Design Challenge
The greatest challenge was translating North American neoclassical language into a compact Asian home without losing balance. Internally, it required reinterpreting historical aesthetics within modern daily life. Externally, humid climate, fire codes, and material of Taiwan limits demanded careful selections. Navigating between emotional memory, cultural beliefs, and technical constraints shaped a design both refined and deeply personal.
Project Duration
The apartment design began in August 2023 in New Taipei City, Taiwan, and was completed in January 2024.
Operation Flow
The design invites users into a gentle flow, where each step reveals thoughtful layers. Entering through a dark toned foyer, the retractable door glides smoothly shielding the kitchen while preserving openness. Full height built in storage quietly hides clutter and groceries, protecting the minimalist elegance of the space. Every interaction balances privacy, comfort, and a sense of belonging, carrying traces of distant memories from a life once lived beyond the sea.
Research
The research explored spatial behavior and cultural memory, aiming to balance neoclassical beauty with daily function. Through interviews, site studies, and iterative modeling, data from client stories and environmental analysis guided the design. Reconstructing memories into proportions and materials, the process deepened cultural sensitivity. The result shapes emotional connections, influencing residential design and living experiences.
Inspiration
Inspired by fond memories of the client living in Canada, the design reimagines North American neoclassical charm through a modern, heartfelt lens. It reflects a longing for familiar proportions, comforting textures, and the quiet elegance of home. Guided by emotional connection and the desire to create a warm, enduring living space, the project celebrates both cultural heritage and everyday rituals.
