About Proof of Rain Artwork
Proof of Rain is a contemporary glass sculpture inspired by rainfall. The work is made of hot shaped glass in varying shades of blue. Small droplets, formed through flameworking with a controlled splashing effect, represent raindrops. A blown blue form beneath the droplets represents the accumulation of life experiences. The sculpture measures 380 by 200 by 450 millimeters. Proof of Rain is shown as a static installation, and light reveals the depth and reflections of the glass. The intent is to join nature and craft in one form.
Derya Geylani Vuruşan's Proof of Rain Artwork engages with contemporary sculptural practices that investigate the intersection of materiality, temporality, and natural phenomena, positioning itself within traditions that seek to capture ephemeral moments and render them permanent through technical mastery and material innovation. The work demonstrates sophisticated understanding of color theory and optical effects, deploying saturated blue tones that evoke aquatic environments, atmospheric conditions, and the poetic associations of water in its myriad manifestations, from raindrop to ocean depth, from reflection to refraction. The technical achievement evident in the seamless integration of translucent white splash forms within the luminous blue matrix suggests advanced casting or encapsulation processes, whether through resin embedding, glass blowing and layering, or ceramic glaze application, each method requiring precise control to achieve the optical clarity, color saturation, and spatial relationships visible in the finished piece. The formal sophistication appears in the balanced asymmetry of the three splash elements, their varied scales and orientations creating visual rhythm and directional flow that activate the composition while maintaining overall coherence and equilibrium. The choice to freeze fluid dynamics at the moment of maximum complexity and beauty reflects longstanding artistic fascination with temporal arrest, joining historical precedents from high-speed photography to Futurist attempts to capture motion, yet here translated into a contemplative rather than aggressive register, inviting sustained looking rather than immediate impact. The ovoid format itself carries rich symbolic resonance across cultures, suggesting containment, potential, origin, and wholeness, while the vertical orientation aligns the work with the human figure and upright stance, creating an implicit scale relationship and embodied viewing experience. The chromatic intensity achieved through the blue field demonstrates mastery of color saturation and optical phenomena, creating depth through subtle gradation while maintaining chromatic coherence, the blue tones perhaps alluding to spiritual traditions associating this hue with transcendence, infinity, and contemplative states, or to more immediate associations with sky, water, and the natural world that sustains life. The embedded marbled patterns visible within the blue matrix add secondary visual interest and suggest the artist's engagement with chance, fluid dynamics, and the aesthetic possibilities of controlled spontaneity, embracing rather than eliminating the marks of process and material behavior. The relationship between the opaque white splash forms and the translucent blue field creates spatial complexity, the white elements appearing simultaneously to rest upon, float within, and emerge from the colored ground, generating productive ambiguity about layering, depth, and material structure that rewards prolonged observation. How might this arrested moment of liquid transformation invite reflection on broader themes of preservation and loss, the human desire to capture beauty before it dissipates, the tension between flow and stasis that characterizes both artistic practice and lived experience, and the poetic possibilities that emerge when technical mastery serves contemplative ends?
Press Kit
- Unique Properties
- This is a contemporary glass art piece that uniquely combines hot glass shaping with symbolic representation. The piece features droplets, shaped by splashing effects, symbolizing raindrops. The blue blown form beneath them represents the accumulation of life experiences. What sets this design apart is its innovative approach to capturing the natural essence of rain, blending technical precision with emotional depth, resulting in a striking, meaningful artwork that merges nature and craft.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- 380 mm x 200mm x 450 mm
- Tags
- glass, contemporary glass, glass art
- Production Technology
- The piece was created using advanced hot glass shaping techniques, where molten glass was carefully blown into forms with varying shades of blue. The droplets were shaped through flameworking tecnics with a controlled splashing effect, simulating the impact of rain. Precision in temperature control and timing was essential to achieve the desired texture and fluidity in the glass. The final form was carefully constructed to represent both the raindrops and their accumulation, capturing the interplay between craftsmanship and nature.
- Design Challenge
- The creative challenge in artwork is lay in capturing the delicate essence of rain through glass, balancing artistic expression with technical precision. The difficulty stemmed from the need to replicate the fluid, dynamic nature of raindrops using static material. Overcoming the physical constraints of glassblowing, such as controlling splashing effects and maintaining form integrity, was crucial. Additionally, integrating historical symbolism with contemporary techniques posed a challenge, demanding a deep understanding of both craft and meaning.
- Project Duration
- The project started in 20th of February and finished in April 2025. It exhibited during CI BLOOM, which is a leading art fair in Turkey, İstanbul in 25-28 April 2024
- Operation Flow
- It operates as a static installation, where viewers interact with the piece visually. The transformation happens through the glass's intricate design, where each droplet and form is carefully shaped to evoke the sensation of rain. The key interaction comes from observing the piece's details and reflections, with the light revealing its depth. Its effectiveness lies in the combination of delicate glasswork and its symbolic representation, offering a powerful emotional connection to nature and life.
- Research
- The research behind the artwork is an experimental, focusing on the intersection of nature and glass art. The objective was to explore how glass can symbolically represent natural phenomena, specifically rain. The methodology involved trial and error, using hot glass shaping and splashing effects to replicate the fluidity of rain. Data was gathered through observation and adjustments to temperature, pressure, and technique. Insights revealed that blending symbolism with craftsmanship creates deeper emotional resonance. The impact extends to design by pushing the boundaries of traditional glass techniques, encouraging innovation in both artistic and functional contexts.
- Inspiration
- The inspiration stems from the natural phenomenon of rainfall and its symbolic connection to life and memory. Motivated by the desire to capture the transient beauty of rain, the project explores how water droplets accumulate and shape the landscape. Technically, it combines hot glass shaping techniques with splashing effects, reflecting the intersection of nature and craftsmanship, while also delving into the emotional significance of lived experiences and their accumulation over time.
