About Salamat Apartment Residential

Salamat Apartment is a meticulously crafted architectural design that strikes a harmonious balance between functionality and aesthetic appeal. The project faced key challenges, such as limited natural light and the irregular geometry of the site. These issues were addressed with thoughtful planning to maximize natural light and air circulation while ensuring privacy and comfort for the residents. The apartment consists of multiple levels, including duplex units, strategically positioned to offer scenic urban views while optimizing space usage.

Faezeh Tavasoliara's Salamat Apartment Residential engages contemporary architectural discourse surrounding material authenticity and environmental responsiveness within residential design, positioning the work within broader investigations of how traditional masonry construction techniques can be reinterpreted through modern compositional strategies to create dwelling environments that balance privacy, community, and atmospheric mediation. The design demonstrates sophisticated formal accomplishment through its volumetric composition, where asymmetrical massing creates dynamic equilibrium between a dominant vertical tower and a lower horizontal wing, the two elements unified through consistent material treatment yet distinguished by their spatial organization and relationship to the ground plane, establishing a hierarchical reading that guides visual comprehension from dominant to subordinate forms while maintaining overall compositional coherence. The perforated brick screens represent a particularly successful passage of architectural resolution, serving simultaneously as functional climate modulation devices that filter harsh sunlight while permitting air circulation, structural elements integrated into the load-bearing masonry system, and aesthetic features that activate the façade with rhythmic pattern and textural contrast, this integration of performance and expression exemplifying design thinking that refuses the dichotomy between utility and beauty. The chromatic restraint evident in the earth-toned palette achieves notable sophistication through its subtle gradations, the play of warm and cool values emerging not from applied color but from the inherent character of fired clay brick responding to changing light conditions, shadows reading as cooler umber against sunlit surfaces that bloom into warm ochre and pale buff, this chromatic variation arising from tectonic conditions rather than surface decoration demonstrating an understanding of how material behavior generates visual richness. The balcony elements extend inhabitable space beyond the building envelope while creating critical zones of environmental transition between interior and exterior, their deep recession providing shade and shelter while establishing spatial complexity that prevents the façade from reading as a simple plane, instead articulating the building skin as a thick, layered membrane with depth and dimensional presence. The formal vocabulary appears to draw upon regional traditions of brick construction, perhaps evoking courtyard housing typologies and vernacular screening devices adapted to climatic conditions, while simultaneously engaging modernist principles of geometric abstraction, modular repetition, and the expression of structural logic, this synthesis of traditional wisdom and contemporary sensibility suggesting an architectural approach that seeks continuity rather than rupture with cultural heritage. The work invites consideration of how residential architecture can provide both individual privacy and collective identity, the repeated modules suggesting democratic seriality while subtle variations in balcony depth and screen placement acknowledge differentiation, and how material choices that respond to environmental conditions through passive means create buildings that age with dignity while reducing energy consumption, positioning architecture as both cultural expression and ecological responsibility, asking viewers to contemplate what forms of dwelling best serve contemporary life while honoring the accumulated knowledge embedded in long-standing building traditions.

Design Challenge
The most challenging aspect of the Salamat Residential Apartment project was addressing the constraints posed by the irregular shape of the plot, limited access to natural light, and restrictive municipal regulations. The plot's geometry was difficult, creating issues with spatial organization and façade design. The building had limited frontage, which further constrained the design, requiring a solution to provide both functional living spaces and an aesthetically coherent exterior.
The most critical challenge was the lack of light from two sides due to neighboring properties and city regulations that restricted direct views. This made it difficult to ensure that each apartment received adequate natural light, which is a key factor in creating livable spaces. The design needed to avoid traditional solutions like light wells, which are often used to bring in light in dense urban environments. Instead, the solution was to strategically place windows, terraces, and an angled break in the side wall to redirect light deeper into the building. The introduction of a two-meter-high secondary wall also helped improve daylight access for the internal spaces.
Another challenge came from the regulatory constraints imposed by the neighboring property, which had a significant impact on the design of the façade. The neighboring building limited view access and imposed restrictions on window placement. This required careful planning to maintain privacy while still allowing enough light into the apartments. The façade was also subject to strict municipal guidelines, which required the integration of specific materials, like brick, into the design.Incorporating these constraints while maintaining a high level of design quality and spatial comfort was the most difficult task. Balancing the need for natural light, privacy, and compliance with regulations required innovative thinking, as well as a deep understanding of the spatial dynamics at play. Despite these challenges, the final design successfully created functional, light-filled living spaces and a cohesive façade, overcoming the complexities of the site and local regulations.

Grand Interview about Salamat Apartment Residential

Our innovative approach to maximizing natural light involves a cutout strategy and facade design that directs light into the core of the building instead of relying on traditional light wells. By utilizing expansive windows and strategic terraces, we have transformed the living experience by emphasizing the interplay between light and shadow.

The brick lattice shell acts as a modern reinterpretation of traditional Iranian architecture. It serves as a dual-purpose element: providing necessary privacy from neighbors while acting as a light filter that softens incoming sunlight, enhancing both the aesthetic character and the functionality of the interior spaces.

We embraced the site's irregular geometry as an opportunity rather than a constraint. By introducing structural breaks and precise plan subdivisions, we regularized the primary living spaces while utilizing the unconventional corners to form spatial voids and unique circulation areas and unique circulation areas.

The duplex units were strategically positioned to optimize the separation between public and private zones and to make the most of the building's height. This arrangement allows residents to enjoy maximum urban views and sunlight, providing an experience reminiscent of a villa in the sky.

To address complex municipal regulations regarding privacy and overlooking, we developed an innovative facade. By integrating custom-designed brick screens and false walls, we met strict zoning requirements while maintaining our creative vision for the building's envelope.

The integration of sustainable features is rooted in thermal and light simulation analysis. By leveraging cross-ventilation and precise aperture placement, the design regulates internal temperatures throughout the seasons and significantly reduces the reliance on mechanical heating and cooling.

My academic background in architectural tourism and spatial perception heavily influenced the project. Every design decision—from the orientation of views to the quality of illumination—was guided by the objective of creating a human-centric experience that resonates with the residents' perception of their environment.

The choice of brick honors traditional Iranian materials while pushing for contemporary implementation. Through the use of modern installation techniques and mechanical connections, we created a dialogue between heritage and modernity, ensuring that the material serves both a structural and a performative role in light management.

To foster a sense of belonging and well-being, we focused on creating "safe spaces" within the home. By controlling light, utilizing natural materials, and establishing a strong visual connection to the exterior, we designed the interiors to be comforting and emotionally grounding for the residents.

Winning the Bronze A' Design Award is a testament that high-quality, human-responsive architecture is possible even in dense urban settings with strict limitations. I hope this project serves as a model for future residential architecture in Iran, demonstrating that we can move beyond purely quantitative density toward qualitative, livable urban housing.
