About Splash Social App

Splash is a social networking application created to help college students meet new friends in person. Users sign up with a phone number and see upcoming events on the home page. One click joins an event, and new meetups can be created in seconds. Matching is based on time, location and shared interests. Second degree connections and private phone number exchange support trust and safety. Reminders encourage attendance. Splash is built for iOS and Android and removes cost and time barriers to campus socializing.

Junjie Xu's Splash Social App represents an accomplished exploration of contemporary mobile interface design addressing the perennial human need for meaningful social connection through technology-mediated interaction, positioning itself within the evolution of location-aware social networking applications while demonstrating notable sophistication in visual communication hierarchy and user experience orchestration across critical onboarding and engagement touchpoints. The compositional achievement evident in this four-screen progression reveals careful attention to information architecture principles, establishing clear visual rhythms through consistent spatial modules, typographic scale systems, and chromatic discipline that guides user attention systematically from brand introduction through functional understanding to profile discovery and interaction completion, with each interface state building upon established visual patterns while introducing necessary new information without overwhelming cognitive capacity or disrupting the coherent design language that unifies the experience. The chromatic strategy employed throughout suggests deliberate psychological positioning, deploying cool cyan and navy tonalities traditionally associated with trustworthiness, technological competence, and professional credibility, while strategic warm accents in illustrative and photographic elements introduce essential human warmth and approachable personality that counterbalances potential sterility of purely systematic design, creating a visual voice that appears simultaneously competent and friendly, efficient and empathetic, organized and playful. Technical merit manifests in the crisp rendering quality, precise alignment systems, legible typographic hierarchies optimized for mobile viewing distances and contexts, and thoughtful component design that suggests a mature design system governing button states, card structures, modal behaviors, and content organization patterns, demonstrating facility with contemporary digital design tools and methodologies while avoiding gratuitous decoration or trend-driven styling that might date the interface prematurely. The thematic territory this work inhabits centers on reducing friction and anxiety in social connection formation, particularly within campus communities where proximity and shared context create opportunity for meaningful interaction yet social barriers and matching inefficiencies often prevent realization of that potential, with the interface design choices appearing calculated to build user confidence through predictable patterns, clear affordances, transparent information sharing, and agency-preserving interaction models where users maintain control over participation timing and challenge selection parameters. The sequential narrative structure from onboarding splash screen through challenge discovery to profile matching and meetup completion demonstrates sophisticated understanding of user journey mapping and progressive engagement design, introducing complexity gradually while maintaining visual continuity and interaction consistency that reduces learning curves and supports confident navigation even for first-time users unfamiliar with the application's specific conventions. Iconographic elements including the wave-form brand mark and reclining figure illustration introduce playful visual metaphor suggesting flow, ease, movement, and relaxed social engagement without rigid formality, while the photographic profile imagery showing outdoor campus settings grounds the digital experience in physical place and authentic human presence, reminding users that the application serves as catalyst and facilitator rather than replacement for face-to-face human connection that remains the ultimate goal. One might contemplate how this interface design negotiates the inherent tension between technological mediation and authentic human connection, asking whether such systems ultimately enhance or complicate our capacity for spontaneous social formation, while appreciating the thoughtful design choices that appear oriented toward minimizing digital friction and maximizing real-world interaction outcomes.

Production Technology
Splash was built using Swift for iOS development with a Firebase backend for real-time event matching and authentication. We employed React Native for cross-platform scalability, leveraging Google Cloud Functions for instant event processing. The UI was crafted using Figma, focusing on minimalistic yet engaging interaction flows. Our design methodology followed Lean UX and rapid prototyping, allowing for iterative user testing and agile improvements.
Design Challenge
The biggest challenge was balancing spontaneity with user safety and trust. Unlike traditional networking apps, Splash required instant but meaningful social matching, ensuring low drop-off rates while maintaining a seamless UX. We tackled this by leveraging second-degree connections for social proof, implementing privacy-first phone exchange, and designing a minimal-input event creation process. Rapid iteration and real-world testing allowed us to optimize engagement.

Inspiration
Splash was inspired by the struggle of making real-life friends on campus without investing excessive time or money. We saw a gap—students craved spontaneous, effortless social interactions. Drawing from Uber’s instant matching model, we designed Splash to remove the friction in meeting new people. Our research included a 500-person CMU survey and 100+ user interviews, refining our MVP for real-world needs. With fast iterations and data-driven UX, we built a seamless, intuitive experience.
