About History Addict Education App

History Addict is an education mobile app that turns the traditionally tedious process of learning history into an engaging, gamified experience. It harnesses data analytics and AI algorithms to recommend history courses tailored to users interests. The app also transforms historian-endorsed learning tools into interactive puzzles within its quiz module, helping users effectively reinforce knowledge while enjoying a game like experience. By making history learning more entertaining and accessible, History Addict aims to inspire more people to appreciate and engage with history in their lives.

The History Addict Education App by Xi Pang situates itself within the expanding landscape of educational technology design, where mobile interfaces serve as primary portals for cultural knowledge transmission and historical learning experiences, drawing upon traditions of museum digital interpretation, academic content delivery platforms, and consumer-facing educational applications that balance scholarly rigor with accessible engagement. The compositional achievement demonstrates sophisticated understanding of spatial presentation conventions in product visualization, employing dynamic angular arrangement across three device instances that suggests both dimensional materiality and interface narrative progression, inviting viewers to understand the application ecosystem through multiple entry points and use contexts simultaneously visible within a unified presentation frame. The chromatic sophistication evidences thoughtful palette construction balancing warm accent colors that guide attention and establish interactive affordances against cool neutral grounds that ensure typographic legibility and sustained reading comfort, while photographic content introduces saturated hues that celebrate cultural richness and historical visual heritage without overwhelming the restrained interface architecture, creating harmonious tension between content abundance and design restraint that serves pedagogical clarity. Technical facility appears throughout the interface design system, with typography demonstrating careful attention to hierarchy through weight variation, scale modulation, and strategic deployment of color to distinguish navigational elements from content headers from body text, ensuring information architecture remains immediately scannable while accommodating substantial textual content within limited screen real estate. The course detail screen suggests robust feature integration including user ratings displayed through familiar star iconography and numerical precision, testimonial cards with user imagery and temporal markers establishing social proof and community engagement, and clear action prompts for enrollment or registration that balance commercial functionality with educational mission, the overall interface communicating both institutional credibility and approachable accessibility. The article reader interface demonstrates particular accomplishment in balancing visual richness through prominent photographic headers that immerse viewers in cultural content against text-optimized layouts employing comfortable line lengths, appropriate leading for extended reading, and subtle navigational elements that remain accessible without dominating the reading experience, suggesting thoughtful consideration of how users engage with substantive historical and cultural content within mobile contexts. The personalized dashboard interface introduces warmer, softer chromatic treatments and card-based content organization that emphasizes discovery and recommendation, the greeting by name establishing intimate user relationship while course thumbnails with overlaid text and imagery create browsable exploration opportunities, the interface architecture suggesting adaptive learning pathways and user preference accommodation that extends beyond static content delivery toward responsive educational experiences. Thematically, the work celebrates the democratization of cultural and historical knowledge through contemporary digital access, honoring the richness of human heritage across traditions and geographies while making such knowledge available beyond institutional walls and traditional educational gatekeeping, the interface design itself enacting values of clarity, accessibility, and respect for both content and user through its restrained elegance and functional sophistication. The photographic content visible across screens gestures toward diverse historical and cultural traditions, from architectural heritage suggesting vernacular building traditions and urban development patterns, through portraiture conventions that document social customs and artistic practices, toward decorative and material culture that embodies aesthetic values and craft traditions, the application serving as vessel for multifaceted historical exploration. One might observe how the three-device presentation invites consideration of the application as ecosystem rather than singular tool, suggesting how educational engagement unfolds across multiple contexts, use cases, and user needs, from goal-oriented course enrollment through immersive content consumption toward ongoing discovery and personalized learning journeys, each interface moment serving distinct pedagogical purposes within a cohesive design framework that appears both technically accomplished and pedagogically intentional in its construction of digital learning experiences that honor historical knowledge while embracing contemporary interaction possibilities.

Unique Properties
History Addict is an education app that turns the traditionally tedious history learning process into a gamification experience. It leverages data analytics and AI algorithms to suggest courses that match user interest. Besides, the app builds on effective learning tools recommended by historians and transforms them into interactive puzzles in the quiz module. As such, users can effectively consolidate their learning outcomes via the quiz while having a game like experience.
Dimensions & Packaging
Through data analytics, the home page feed automatically recommends courses that are currently trending based on other users interest on the app. On top of this, the app also leverages machine learning algorithms to suggest courses to the user based on his or her past searching, browsing, and learning behaviors. This ensures the user can get a good mix of familiar history topics that are similar to those they have learnt before and fresh history topics that they have not touched on yet.

Production Technology
History Addict followed a human centred design process. At the start, the designer conducted extensive research to understand the problem space and user needs. Various tools were then used to extract research insights, like persona, user journey map, and qualitative coding. Based on the research findings, the designer created early prototypes to experiment with different directions. Eventually, hifi interfaces were crafted based on the final design idea. See the attached pdf for more details.
Design Challenge
The biggest challenge was to make the app entertaining and fun. There were some competitor products before History Addict so it is vital for the app to have a unique value proposition. I focused on the quiz as a breakthrough as it was often considered a daunting and tedious part in the learning process. Then I dedicated myself to active brainstorming and extensive literature review, which eventually helped me uncover various learning tools and turned them into game like puzzles for the quiz.
Project Duration
The user research and low fidelity mockups of this project were completed between October and November of 2019 in Shanghai, China. In the spring of 2021, it was revamped with a new visual style and updated UI elements in Edinburgh, Scotland. The final stage of this project was conducted to further refine design details in 2024 in California, United States.
Operation Flow
All product features can be easily interacted with via common hand gestures. On the reading page, users can press and hold on text that they are interested in, then a toolbar will pop up giving them options to copy, highlight, or share the selected text. Plus, in the quiz module, users can solve the questions with multiple ways, like clicking on the right answer card or dragging and rearranging answer cards in the correct order. The variety of interaction adds more fun to the user experience.
Research
Multiple research methods were adopted in this project, including literature review, competitor analysis, and user research. For example, extensive surveys were conducted to collect both qualitative and quantitative data from over 50 history learners of different age groups. The goal was to understand the users pain points, needs, learning preferences and expectations. For more detailed research results and insights, please refer to the uploaded pdf document due to the 500 character limit.
Inspiration
Learning history can be challenging sometimes. Firstly, memorizing various historical times and figures is difficult and time consuming. Secondly, existing learning materials feel tedious to some learners. To tackle these issues, I conducted research to explore effective learning tools that help users strengthen their memory, like family trees and flashcards. Afterwards, I leveraged these tools with gamification design to make the history learning process more entertaining and enjoyable.
