About Dongtou Passenger Port Cruise Terminal

Dongtou Passenger Port is a cruise terminal located at Tantou Mountain Bay in Dongtou, China. The terminal links urban and scenic areas. Guided by the concept of symbiosis of mountain and sea, terraced setback buildings and planted slopes form a three dimensional space. The design connects the mountains and the coastline lengthwise and includes an 800 meter commercial and waterfront belt across the site. Transport, commercial and ecological corridors are placed on separate levels. A curved concrete shell structure, inspired by seashell forms, keeps the interior free of columns.

Dongtou Passenger Port Cruise Terminal by Pengfei He represents a distinguished achievement within the evolving tradition of maritime civic architecture, wherein the designer appears to engage meaningfully with both the phenomenological experience of threshold crossing and the ecological imperative of landscape-sensitive intervention, the work participating in contemporary discourse surrounding biomorphic parametric design while simultaneously honoring vernacular coastal building traditions through its scaled, clustered massing that suggests natural geological accretion rather than imposed geometric order, technically the composition demonstrates sophisticated understanding of processional sequence as visitors would experience gradual revelation moving from forested arrival zones through intermediate gathering plazas toward the culminating waterfront pavilions, the chromatic strategy employing deliberate restraint that allows architectural form to achieve prominence through shape and shadow rather than surface embellishment, the three primary pavilion structures seem to reference both maritime imagery of billowing sails and natural phenomena of wave-smoothed stones, creating what might be termed a productive ambiguity that invites multiple interpretive frameworks, formally the curvilinear promenade functions as connective tissue binding discrete programmatic elements into unified experiential narrative while the floating pier extensions establish rhythmic counterpoint through their orthogonal geometry, the work suggests thoughtful meditation on the symbolic significance of departure and arrival spaces as liminal zones where terrestrial certainty gives way to maritime possibility, one might observe how the deliberate preservation of substantial forest buffer demonstrates ecological sensitivity positioning the terminal as guest within its landscape rather than dominant intervention, how does this careful negotiation between human infrastructure and natural systems reshape our understanding of what civic architecture might aspire to achieve in an era of environmental consciousness?

Unique Properties
Located at Tantou moutain Bay in Dongtou, the site links urban and scenic zones. Guided by the "Symbiosis of Mountain and Sea" concept, terraced setback buildings and vegetated slopes blend mountain and sea to create a three-dimensional space. Longitudinally connect mountains and coastline, transversely integrate an 800-meter commercial-waterfront belt, vertically zone transport, commercial, and ecological corridors, shaping a low-carbon symbiotic entity.

Design Challenge
In a complex terrain environment, how can buildings blend seamlessly with the "mountains and seas", and how can they provide people with a leisure walking space?

Research
The base at Tantou Mountain in Dongtou constructs a three-dimensional space based on the concept of "mountain-sea symbiosis" and creates a low-carbon entity. The cruise terminal integrates the elements of Buddhist grottoes and seashells, creating the artistic conception of "Buddhist Grottoes in a Mirage City by the Sea".
Inspiration
The Dongtou passenger port draws inspiration from the curvilinear forms of seashells, integrating the morphological essence of Buddhist grottoes to craft the poetic concept of "Maritime Mirage of Sacred Caves." Resembling a colossal shell cradling a pearl, the structure materializes as a mirage-like seascape. Through layered archways and streamlined shell-like volumes, it enhances its landmark identity as a pilgrimage gateway while transcending Buddhist cultural motifs into contemporary poetics.
