About Zhonggu Logistics Working Space

Zhonggu Logistics is an office interior located in a container shipping logistics park in Rizhao, China. The building has nine floors and covers 10000 square meters, with areas for business, a corporate culture exhibition, offices, a restaurant and staff accommodation. Corrugated metal sheets recall the surface texture of containers and appear on the lobby wall, the reception desk background and the floor signage. Reflective light strips on the ceiling and the floor guide visitors toward the dispatch center control room on the ninth floor.

Liang Wei's reception environment exemplifies the spatial and material intelligence characteristic of accomplished contemporary commercial interior design, where architectural elements serve simultaneously as functional infrastructure and as carefully calibrated brand communication establishing organizational values through built form. The reception desk emerges as the compositional and conceptual focal point, a sculptural volume whose substantial mass paradoxically achieves visual lightness through immaculate white surfaces that seem to dematerialize under diffused illumination, while the contrasting metallic base in warm gold or bronze finish provides both literal and metaphorical grounding, the precious metal connotation elevating the functional furniture element into symbolic territory suggesting value, permanence, and institutional stability. The vertical fluted wall treatment dominating the upper register demonstrates technical sophistication through its rhythmic repetition and precise execution, creating visual texture that enlivens the large planar surface without introducing pattern noise or competing with the primary reception volume, this ribbed surface potentially serving acoustic functions while contributing aesthetic refinement that rewards sustained looking. The horizontal ventilation grille establishing the middle zone datum demonstrates how utilitarian building systems can be integrated as deliberate compositional elements rather than concealed necessities, its linear geometry reinforcing the orthogonal discipline governing the entire spatial composition while its dark metallic finish provides tonal contrast that articulates spatial layers and enhances depth legibility. The material palette reveals careful consideration of psychological effect and cultural associations, the predominant white suggesting cleanliness, efficiency, modernist values, and neutral professional ground, while the gray tonalities introduce sophistication and urban contemporary character without the severity of pure black or the coldness of steel, and the warm metallic accents inject notes of luxury, quality, and human warmth that prevent the neutral scheme from reading as austere or uninviting. The polished floor surface creates reflective doubling that expands perceived spatial volume while its linear grain pattern introduces subtle movement directing circulation flow, the hard smooth material suggesting durability and ease of maintenance appropriate to high-traffic commercial contexts while its refined finish quality signals investment in environmental quality and attention to experiential detail. The soft-focus botanical element at right edge, though peripherally positioned, serves crucial compositional and atmospheric functions, providing organic irregularity as relief from geometric discipline, introducing life and growth symbolism that humanizes the architectural precision, and creating atmospheric depth through reduced definition that suggests spatial extension beyond the photographic frame. The lighting strategy appears to embrace natural illumination sources, avoiding the harsh artificial quality of typical commercial fluorescent systems in favor of soft diffused daylight that flatters materials, reduces visual fatigue, and connects occupants to diurnal rhythms and external environmental conditions, this lighting choice supporting both functional visibility and psychological wellbeing while allowing materials to express their inherent chromatic and textural qualities without color temperature distortion. One might consider how this reception environment negotiates the complex spatial semiotics of threshold zones, spaces that must simultaneously welcome and control, invite approach while maintaining institutional boundaries, communicate accessibility while preserving security, and establish organizational identity while accommodating diverse visitor populations, the formal resolution here suggesting that these apparent contradictions can be held in productive tension through thoughtful spatial design and material selection.

Production Technology
The design incorporates corrugated metal sheets that replicate the traditional surface texture of containers, serving as a fundamental aspect of the overall space. This is evident in various elements, such as the display of the company logo of Zhonggu, digital signage on each floor, the lobby wall, and the reception desk background. Collectively, the square spatial configuration and the use of metal panels evoke the sensation of a massive container.
Design Challenge
In the corporate culture display area, the ceiling features a corrugated design, evoking the sensation of being inside a large container. The floor is designed around a cargo ship motif, with a water ripple pattern radiating outward, implying that the enterprise is a ship navigating through waves, steadily advancing and thriving in the commercial landscape. This design effectively communicates the core values to its visitors.
Project Duration
The project commenced in March 2023 and wrapped up in October 2024 in Rizhao.
Operation Flow
The building comprises nine floors, covering areas for business, corporate culture exhibitions, offices, a restaurant, and staff accommodations. Notably, the ninth floor is designated as the dispatch center control room, along with spaces for business meetings and negotiations. The design underlines technology and modernity, utilizing reflective light strips on the ceiling and floor to guide visitors toward the control room along a luminous pathway.
Research
The ninth floor offers a stunning view of the container yard to the east and the sea to the south. With this perspective in mind, the design incorporates the concept of a sales office reception to establish a negotiation area that merges breathtaking views with a welcoming atmosphere for visitors. The flooring is crafted from black mirrored marble, creating a reflective effect that the negotiation area seems to be floating above the water, enhancing the overall ambiance.
Inspiration
Geometric lines and textured elements inspired by standard containers are integral to the overall design of the space. These features not only contribute to a visual identity but also reconcile with the industrial characteristics and context of the park on a deeper level.
