About Symmetry of Comfort Integrated Residential Space

Symmetry of Comfort is an integrated residential interior that unites living, dining, and kitchen areas in a continuous, harmonious flow. The project emphasizes balance between functionality and emotional warmth through natural materials, soft lighting, and muted tones. Custom furniture and precise detailing enhance spatial fluidity, creating an atmosphere of refined simplicity and comfort. The result is a serene environment that blends aesthetic elegance with the calm rhythm of everyday life.

Nathália Cristina de Souza Vilela Telis's Integrated Residential Space exemplifies the contemporary design movement toward holistic domestic environments where rigid spatial divisions yield to fluid interconnected zones that maintain functional clarity while promoting visual and experiential continuity throughout the dwelling, a philosophical approach rooted in mid-twentieth-century modernist spatial innovations and renewed through twenty-first-century emphasis on wellness, biophilic connection, and the integration of living spaces that respond to evolving patterns of domestic inhabitation. The compositional achievement of this dining environment resides in its masterful balance between architectural discipline and organic warmth, the rigorous symmetry of the central dining arrangement providing stable visual anchor while carefully calibrated asymmetries, including the placement of the small canine figure and the progression of spatial thresholds, prevent static predictability and invite the eye to wander through layered spatial zones. The chromatic sophistication demonstrates nuanced understanding of how subtle tonal variations within a restricted warm neutral palette can create spatial articulation and atmospheric richness without chromatic drama, the earth-toned butterfly artwork providing just sufficient contrast to command attention while remaining harmonious with the overall temperature register, and the strategic introduction of verdant and crimson seasonal accents in the background living zone suggesting the designer's awareness of how minimal chromatic punctuation activates neutral fields. The lighting design reveals particularly accomplished technical resolution, the custom pendant fixture with its horizontal brass armature and trio of spherical luminaires combining sculptural presence with functional illumination, the opalescent glass globes diffusing light gently to eliminate harsh shadows while the metallic elements introduce subtle reflective animation as viewers move through the space, this luminaire functioning simultaneously as focal object and atmospheric generator. Material selection and surface treatment choices demonstrate sophisticated sensibility regarding tactile experience and visual richness, the juxtaposition of the table's mirror-bright reflective finish against the soft matte absorption of chair upholstery creating textural dialogue that rewards both distant viewing and intimate proximity, while the transition from warm wood flooring to cooler neutral tile subtly demarcates functional zones without introducing visual rupture. The wall treatment employing raised panel molding evokes neoclassical architectural heritage while maintaining contemporary restraint, these shallow relief rectangles providing geometric structure that echoes the rectilineear discipline governing furniture placement and spatial organization, their subtle dimensional projection capturing ambient light to create delicate shadow lines that articulate wall planes and prevent flat monotony. Thematically, this residential environment seems to explore the possibility of domestic spaces that nurture both social congregation and individual repose, the substantial circular dining table proposing egalitarian gathering around a shared center while the visible recession into background living zones suggests the availability of retreat and solitude, the composition thus encoding values of balanced communal and private experience within the contemporary home. The butterfly motif commanding the primary wall plane may reference transformation, natural beauty, ephemeral grace, or the human impulse to capture and frame fleeting moments of natural perfection, while its division across two framed panels could suggest duality, mirroring, or the constructive tension between separation and unity, fragmentation and wholeness, the individual wings achieving their full symbolic power only when perceived as integrated whole. One might contemplate how this carefully orchestrated environment proposes a particular vision of domestic flourishing, inviting consideration of the relationship between spatial order and psychological ease, between material quality and experiential richness, between design intention and lived inhabitation, and how spaces crafted with such evident care for proportion, light, texture, and flow might shape the daily rhythms and relational dynamics of those who dwell within them, the environment ultimately suggesting that thoughtful design operates not merely as aesthetic arrangement but as framework for enhanced human experience and domestic well-being.

Design Interview about Symmetry of Comfort Integrated Residential Space

The main inspiration behind this design was the idea of home as a place of refuge. The client wanted a space that would provide a sense of safety, comfort, and emotional well-being after the demands of everyday life. My goal was to create an environment where she could truly feel at peace and reconnect with herself.

My main focus was to create a home that would feel welcoming, functional, and deeply personal to the client. Beyond designing a visually cohesive space, I wanted every area to contribute to a sense of comfort, security, and well-being.

My future plans for this award-winning design are to continue sharing its story and the ideas behind it with a broader audience. The project represents my belief that design has the power to improve everyday life by creating spaces that promote comfort, emotional well-being, and a sense of belonging

I began designing the project in mid-2023, developing the concept and refining the details according to the client's needs and lifestyle. Construction started in May 2024 and was completed in December 2024 in Volta Redonda, Brazil. From the initial concept to completion, the project took approximately one and a half years.

This design was commissioned by the client. Our professional relationship began when she hired me to design her company’s commercial space. After seeing the results of that project and developing confidence in my work, she invited me to redesign her entire apartment. The concept was driven by her desire for a home that would provide comfort, security, and emotional well-being. My goal was to create a warm and welcoming environment that reflected her personality while offering a sense of peace and belonging in everyday life.

This project was commissioned for a specific residential client and was fully developed for her personal use. There are no plans to sell, license, or transfer the production rights of the design. It is a highly customized project, created exclusively to meet the client’s lifestyle, needs, and personal preferences. While some of the design solutions may inspire future projects, this work was conceived as a unique and individual response to a particular client and context.

Residential design has always interested me because it has a direct impact on people’s daily lives. A home is much more than a physical space; it is where people feel safe, build memories, and find comfort after the demands of everyday life. I am particularly inspired by the opportunity to transform spaces into environments that improve well-being and reflect each client’s personality. This project allowed me to explore those values by creating a home that balances functionality, comfort, and emotional connection.

Yes, I am constantly inspired by design fairs, exhibitions, and contemporary architecture and interior design projects. These experiences contribute to my creative process and professional growth. However, the strongest influence is always the client. Each project is developed around the client’s lifestyle, needs, and personal preferences, resulting in a design that is unique to that individual rather than based on a specific designer or reference.

This design is intended for people who want their homes to reflect who they are. Although my work is supported by research, experience, and design principles, the client always remains at the center of the process. My goal is to create spaces that express each individual’s personality, lifestyle, and aspirations while providing comfort and functionality.

What sets this design apart is that it was not driven by trends or by my personal signature as a designer. Many people feel pressured to follow what is fashionable at a given moment or to reproduce a particular designer’s style. My approach is different. I believe a home should reflect the person who lives in it, not the designer who created it. Throughout the process, I focused on understanding the client’s personality, habits, values, and emotional connection to the space. The result is a home that feels authentic and timeless because it is deeply rooted in the identity of its owner rather than in temporary design trends.

The name Symmetry of Comfort reflects the sense of harmony that defines the project. From the soft blue palette to the dialogue between materials, textures, and spaces, every element was carefully composed to create balance and emotional comfort. The name also reflects the client’s personality and her desire for a home that feels peaceful, welcoming, and authentic. It is a way of expressing how beauty, functionality, and well-being come together in perfect harmony.

I used a combination of digital design tools and hands-on design methods throughout the project. AutoCAD was used for technical drawings and documentation, while SketchUp and V-Ray were used for 3D modeling and visualizations. Material samples, mood boards, and regular meetings with the client were also essential during the design process, helping to refine decisions and ensure the project accurately reflected the client's needs and personality.

The most unique aspect of this design is that it reflects the client rather than the designer. Many residential projects are driven by trends or by a recognizable design style, but my goal was to create a home that genuinely expressed the client's identity. By carefully understanding her lifestyle, preferences, and emotional needs, I was able to design a space that feels authentic, welcoming, and uniquely hers.

I developed the entire project independently. I was responsible for the concept development, space planning, material selection, custom millwork design, technical drawings, and overall design coordination. Close collaboration with the client was essential throughout the process, ensuring that the final result reflected her personality and lifestyle.

Technology plays an important role in enhancing comfort and convenience throughout the apartment. The home is fully integrated with an automation system that controls lighting, air conditioning, and window treatments through voice commands or simple wall switch interactions. Rather than being a feature on its own, the technology was incorporated to make everyday routines more intuitive and effortless, contributing to the overall sense of comfort, well-being, and ease that defines the project.

Yes, I continuously research new materials, technologies, and market developments to ensure my projects remain current and well-informed. However, my design decisions are primarily guided by professional experience and a deep understanding of the client. Over nearly ten years of practice, I have learned that what works best is not always what is trending, but what genuinely fits the client's lifestyle, needs, and personality. This project was developed through that balance between industry knowledge and a highly personalized design approach.

The greatest challenge was translating the client's personality into a cohesive design. Rather than relying on trends or predefined formulas, every decision needed to reflect her lifestyle, preferences, and emotional connection to the space. The challenge was finding the right balance between functionality, comfort, technology, and aesthetics while creating an environment that felt authentic and truly personal.

I decided to submit the project because I believe international competitions are a valuable way to validate the ideas and design principles that guide my work. It is always a pleasure to see a project that was created with care, purpose, and authenticity being recognized by an international jury. For me, participating is not only about awards, but also about professional growth and sharing my work with a broader audience.

This project reinforced the importance of listening to everyone who will live in the space. While the design process was primarily developed with the client, additional ideas and adjustments emerged during construction through conversations with other family members. It reminded me that a home is shared by different people, each with their own expectations and perspectives. Since then, I have become even more intentional about involving family members early in the process to create stronger alignment and a more successful final result.

One aspect I would like to emphasize is that I see residential design as a deeply personal process. Beyond aesthetics, a home should support well-being, create meaningful experiences, and reflect the identity of the people who live there. Throughout this project, my intention was not to follow trends or impose a particular design style, but to carefully listen to the client and translate her personality into a functional, welcoming, and timeless environment. For me, the greatest success of a project is when people truly feel at home in the spaces created for them.
