About Wuliangye Yuandingjinsheng Baijiu Packaging

Wuliangye Yuandingjinsheng is a packaging design for Chinese baijiu served at wedding banquets. The box opens with a pull-out mechanism, so that two pandas drawn in ink painting style appear to embrace each other. Six illustrated stages of a shared life are linked to the steps of opening the package. The bottle shape is based on bamboo, and the cap follows the form of a traditional embroidered ball. The package is made of recyclable pulp material. The spiral bottle mouth allows the bottle to be reused as a cup or a vase.

Sinong Wu's Wuliangye Yuandingjinsheng Baijiu Packaging exemplifies the sophisticated integration of cultural symbolism with contemporary packaging design methodology, positioning this work within traditions that honor ceremonial gift-giving practices while embracing modern visual communication clarity and material innovation that serve both protective and expressive functions in the domain of premium spirits presentation. The compositional achievement demonstrates rigorous formal intelligence through the dynamic interplay between the vertical cylindrical bottle form and the horizontal rectilinear presentation box, creating satisfying geometric tension while maintaining unified visual identity through carefully orchestrated chromatic strategy and repeated iconographic motifs that reward close examination, the vermillion red elements creating chromatic rhyme across disparate package components while establishing immediate shelf presence and communicating festive occasion appropriate to the matrimonial celebration theme embedded in the illustrative content. Technical accomplishment emerges through the masterful handling of translucent and opaque materials, the frosted bottle surface achieving delicate luminosity that suggests purity and refinement while providing suitable substrate for the subtle gray-scale illustration that appears to float within or upon the curved surface, this material choice demonstrating understanding of how packaging materials can transcend mere functional containment to become active participants in brand storytelling and aesthetic experience, while the pristine white box substrate establishes clean visual field that allows the charming anthropomorphic character illustrations to command attention without chromatic or textural competition. The illustrative vignettes depicting paired figures in matrimonial attire reveal particular sensitivity to character design that balances accessibility with dignity, rendering the figures with gentle humor and warmth while maintaining respectful treatment of ceremonial dress and symbolic significance, these characters appearing to embody auspicious blessings and celebratory wishes appropriate to weddings and union ceremonies within cultural traditions that prize such symbolic communication, the symmetrical positioning of bride and groom figures on the dual drawer fronts reinforcing themes of partnership, balance, and harmonious duality that resonate across universal human experiences of committed relationship and family formation. The chromatic restraint demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how limited palette can amplify communicative impact, the predominant whites and grays establishing refined elegant atmosphere while allowing the strategic deployment of vermillion red to function as both chromatic accent and cultural signifier, this warm saturated hue carrying associations with celebration, good fortune, joy, and auspicious occasions across Asian cultural contexts while also providing practical shelf differentiation and visual hierarchy that guides consumer attention through the package ensemble from cap to ribbon to illustrative elements. The structural innovation of the drawer-style presentation box suggests thoughtful consideration of unboxing experience and ritual reveal, transforming the functional act of accessing product into ceremonial gesture that extends brand engagement beyond initial visual encounter, this attention to tactile interaction and sequential disclosure demonstrating understanding of how packaging design operates across temporal as well as spatial dimensions, inviting consumers to participate actively in the aesthetic experience rather than merely passively receiving visual information. The work appears to navigate successfully between local cultural specificity and international design sophistication, employing visual vocabulary rooted in particular traditions while achieving formal clarity and compositional discipline that communicates across cultural boundaries, this synthesis suggesting how contemporary design practice can honor heritage while remaining legible within globalized visual culture where products circulate beyond their originating contexts. One might contemplate how this packaging ensemble functions as material culture artifact that encodes social values around celebration, relationship, tradition, and ceremonial marking of significant life transitions, inviting consideration of how designed objects participate in human rituals and carry meanings that extend far beyond their immediate functional purposes to touch on fundamental questions of how communities celebrate, how traditions evolve, and how material forms can embody intangible cultural values that connect individuals to larger social fabrics and shared symbolic systems.

Research
This is a project that creates an interactive, cute, and fun core for consumers. In terms of emotional appeal, through interactive design, the six stages of getting to know each other, deepening understanding, getting married, having children, and growing together are combined with illustration design to make consumers feel interesting and novel, thus attracting them.
Inspiration
The task of this project is to apply the concept of fun and interaction to bring new experiences to young consumers.
The brand originates from Sichuan, the hometown of giant pandas, and "yuandingjinsheng" means destined to be together. Using ink painting style and personification techniques, compare the cute panda to two people in love. By combining the six stages of acquaintance, in-depth understanding, marriage, childbirth, and mutual growth with the opening method of packaging design, a unique and interesting interactive experience is created. The inspiration for the bottle design comes from bamboo, and the shape of the bottle cap comes from Xiuqiu (an ancient Chinese mascot and textile).
