About Peace of Mind Interior Design

Peace of Mind is a residential interior design for a 90 square meter home. Modern minimalism guides the project, with pure geometry and low color saturation. A neutral grayscale palette moves from snow white to dark gray, while light gray walls and white ceilings diffuse light evenly. Matte metal, concrete paint and solid wood veneer add depth and warmth. Clean lines connect the kitchen, living room and multifunctional lounge. Concealed storage within walls and cabinets keeps the space open and uncluttered.

The Peace of Mind Interior Design by Chen Chia Yu exemplifies a refined approach to contemporary residential environments where architectural discipline and human comfort achieve balanced synthesis, situating itself within the broader lineage of minimalist spatial design while demonstrating particular sensitivity to material expression and atmospheric subtlety. This interior composition draws upon established principles of modernist reduction and Scandinavian-influenced warmth, employing a restrained material vocabulary that privileges quality over abundance and spatial clarity over decorative excess, a philosophy that traces its aesthetic genealogy through mid-century rationalism while embracing contemporary fabrication technologies and evolving domestic lifestyle patterns. The compositional achievement rests substantially in the designer's calibration of visual weight and material contrast, particularly evident in the tripartite wall treatment that balances neutral uniformity with dramatic natural patterning, the swirling black and white marble veneer serving as focal anchor whose organic veining patterns provide necessary visual energy within an otherwise geometrically controlled environment, this juxtaposition of geological time recorded in stone against manufactured precision in metal fluting creating productive tension between natural formation and human construction. The spatial planning demonstrates sophisticated understanding of circulation and sight lines, with the modular seating system positioned to accommodate multiple conversational configurations while maintaining clear pathways and visual connections to both the storage zone at left and the daylit window area at right, this open yet defined arrangement supporting flexible occupation patterns appropriate to contemporary domestic life. Chromatic restraint proves particularly effective in establishing calm atmospheric unity, the warm neutral foundation punctuated by strategic black accents creating sufficient tonal variation to prevent monotony while maintaining overall harmonious continuity, a limited palette that paradoxically expands perceived spaciousness by eliminating visual fragmentation and allowing architectural form and material character to register without chromatic distraction. The lighting design warrants particular attention for its layered subtlety, combining ambient cove illumination that washes walls with gentle indirect light, natural daylight filtered through adjustable blinds permitting graduated brightness control, and focused accent lighting within display niches that highlights sculptural objects while contributing to overall illumination levels, this multi-source approach eliminating harsh shadows while maintaining adequate task lighting and establishing temporal atmosphere suggesting late afternoon tranquility. Material selection reveals discerning attention to tactile quality and aging characteristics, the leather upholstery offering supple comfort that develops patina over time, the stone flooring providing durable permanence with minimal maintenance demands, the metal elements contributing industrial refinement through powder-coated surfaces that resist fingerprints and wear, each material chosen not merely for immediate visual impact but for long-term performance and evolving aesthetic character. The incorporation of living plants introduces essential organic presence that softens architectural severity while providing health benefits through air purification and biophilic connection, the fiddle-leaf fig's sculptural foliage forms creating naturalistic counterpoint to geometric rigor without compromising spatial clarity. This residential environment invites contemplation of how thoughtful design choices accumulate into coherent atmospheric effect, how material quality resonates beyond initial impression into daily lived experience, how spatial arrangement can support both social interaction and private reflection, and ultimately how domestic interiors might cultivate the mental ease and contemplative calm suggested by the design's evocative title, offering viewers opportunity to consider their own spatial environments and the subtle ways architectural and material decisions shape emotional well-being and psychological comfort.

Unique Properties
The design omits vibrant accents in favor of a neutral grayscale palette, creating a meditative and tranquil atmosphere through the use of white space and desaturated colors. Light gray walls and white ceilings diffuse light evenly, creating a calming and serene atmosphere. Dark gray or jet-black details enhance the layers of detail, maintaining a low-key and understated aesthetic. Like a blank canvas, where distractions settle, residents can relax their minds and return to their true selves.

Production Technology
The design utilizes a rich palette of materials, including matte metal, concrete paint, and solid wood veneer. Cabinet handles and fine line accents create a subtle metallic sheen, while exposed concrete walls and concrete floors lend a rugged industrial aesthetic. The warmth of natural wood veneer infuses a touch of warmth and a human touch, mitigating the space's starkness. The careful proportions and coordination of the various materials enhance the overall sense of depth.
Design Challenge
The homeowner, a 55-year-old woman, left the design entirely to the designer, which proved to be the biggest challenge. The overall mood of the space is based on a sense of tranquility and meditation. Through minimalist visual white space, low-saturation color schemes, and organic curves, the space presents an understated yet intriguing aesthetic. The delicate textures and layering of materials guide the viewer's attention, allowing them to discover diverse details.
Project Duration
Started in June 2024 and completed in April 2025, in New Taipei ity,Taiwan.
Operation Flow
Streamlined corners, contoured walls, and ceilings create a sculptural aesthetic, enhancing the overall design's sculptural quality. The interplay of gently rounded ceiling edges and the geometric interplay of wood paneling on the walls creates a rhythmic aesthetic in every detail, evoking the space as a tranquil work of art. A clever blend of grayscale tones, rustic materials, and precise lines creates a simple yet dynamic living space, showcasing both professionalism and artistic refinement.
Research
The kitchen, living room, and lounge areas are integrated into a seamless, natural flow. Concealed storage cabinets are incorporated into the walls and cabinets to maintain a clean, uncluttered overall design. This allows living areas to extend into one another when needed without sacrificing order: the open kitchen seamlessly connects to the living room, fostering family interaction. Concealed storage systems maintain a spacious and airy space without disrupting visual flow or movement.
Inspiration
With modern minimalism as its core concept, the design creates a calm and restrained home atmosphere through pure geometry and low-color saturation. A neutral grayscale color palette, with a gradual transition from snow-white to dark gray, creates a tranquil atmosphere. Clean, sleek lines seamlessly connect the kitchen, living room, and multi-functional lounge area, allowing the eye to flow freely between the various functional areas, fully showcasing the openness and fluidity of modern living.
