About Bco Yangzhou Zhongji Restaurant Interior Design

Bco Yangzhou Zhongji is a restaurant interior design located on the ground floor of the Zhongji Wenchang Center in Yangzhou, China. The space covers nearly 500 square meters and is double height, with full height windows that bring in daylight. The material palette combines low saturation concrete, pale oak and off white surfaces. Cascading ferns, monstera plants and a living moss wall of 1.8 meters add greenery to the dining area. The facade was rebuilt so that the restaurant reads as transparent from both inside and outside.

Situated within the evolving discourse of contemporary hospitality design, this Silver A' Design Award-winning restaurant interior by Vega Lee, Yin Yu, and Larry Lee demonstrates exceptional command of spatial narrative and material refinement. The work engages longstanding architectural traditions of the processional axis while articulating distinctly contemporary sensibilities through its restrained material palette and integration of atmospheric lighting technology. The barrel-vaulted ceiling, perhaps evoking the grand passages of classical architecture, transforms through the incorporation of concealed linear luminaires into a distinctly modern expression that nonetheless honors the ceremonial weight of vaulted space. The designers seem to engage principles of biophilic design through the strategic incorporation of substantial interior planting that softens the geometric precision of the architectural envelope while introducing chromatic vitality. Technical accomplishment manifests particularly in the seamless integration of multiple lighting systems that collectively establish a warm, enveloping ambiance suggesting late afternoon golden hour regardless of external conditions. The rhythmic repetition of the slatted timber screens generates visual music across the space, their horizontal lines creating counterpoint to the ceiling's sweeping arcs. Material choices throughout suggest careful consideration of sensory experience: the warmth of natural timber, the coolness of marble surfaces, the suppleness of leather seating, and the durability of terrazzo underfoot. The composition invites contemplation of how contemporary hospitality spaces might honor tradition while serving present needs, and how architectural gesture might elevate the quotidian act of dining into something approaching the ceremonial.

Unique Properties
BCO Yangzhou Zhongji sits on the ground floor of Zhongji Wenchang Center at 618 Wenchang Middle Road—locals call it “the most Instagram able brunch oasis on Wenchang.” Nearly 500 m² of double-height space is washed in daylight by full-height windows; inside, low-saturation concrete, pale oak and off-white set the tone, while cascading ferns, monsteras and an 1.8-metre living moss wall drop the perceived temperature by three degrees.

Design Challenge
The transformation of the facade of the original building, and internally and externally transparent.
Project Duration
The project started in September 2024 in Yangzhou, China, and finished in February 2025. And the restaurant opened for business in February 2025.
Inspiration
BCO is an emerald quietly set into the city’s steel ribs. Push the door and a seven-meter glass vault pours liquid sunlight over the din, rinsing it into soft silhouettes. The timber bar meanders like a river; the kettle’s silver stream draws an improvised violin string in mid-air. Concrete walls are tamed into warm rice paper where moss and ferns splatter ink, growing into breathing mountains.
