About Toke Decorative Bookshelf
Toke is a decorative tabletop bookshelf designed for interior spaces. A polished limewood sphere with a diameter of 16 centimetres sits at the centre of the design and acts as both support and balance point. The sphere moves with gravity and keeps the books in order. The frame is made of specially bent metal rod and cut metal plate, joined by welding and finished with electrostatic powder paint. Toke measures 18 centimetres in height, 49 centimetres in width and 16.5 centimetres in depth. The simple form suits living rooms, bedrooms, restaurants, cafes and shops.
Maisonord's Toke Decorative Bookshelf represents a compelling convergence of functional object and sculptural statement, embodying contemporary design's ongoing dialogue between utility and aesthetic experience. The work demonstrates sophisticated understanding of material expressivity, pairing the industrial precision of bent steel rod construction with the organic warmth of hand-turned hardwood, a juxtaposition that speaks to broader currents in craft-informed contemporary design practice. The continuous metal armature, finished in restrained matte black, describes an elegant geometry of angles and curves that simultaneously cradles and displays its contents while asserting its own formal presence. The wooden sphere, positioned at the structural and visual fulcrum, functions as both counterweight and focal element, its turned form and visible grain patterns introducing qualities of handcraft and natural variation into the otherwise precise industrial vocabulary. One might observe resonances with the material philosophies championed by mid-twentieth-century designers who sought to elevate everyday objects through thoughtful formal resolution and honest material expression. The asymmetrical composition creates dynamic visual interest, the weighted book collection at left balanced against the open cantilevered extension at right through the mediating presence of the wooden orb. This tension between mass and void, between weighted occupation and airy openness, invites contemplation of balance as both physical principle and aesthetic value. The design successfully transforms the prosaic act of book storage into an opportunity for visual pleasure and material appreciation, suggesting that objects of daily use might also serve as vehicles for beauty and meaning. Viewers are encouraged to consider how thoughtful design can elevate domestic environments and how the dialogue between disparate materials might speak to broader harmonies between nature and manufacture.

- Selecting and processing the appropriate natural material, polishing it to the correct color after processing. Selecting the correct metal sheet and rod, and joining them together after bending and cutting methods.
- Project Duration
- The project began in istanbul, Türkiye, in January 2025. The first prototype was released in May 2025. Mass production began in July 2025.
- Operation Flow
- The sphere in Toke moves thanks to gravity and balances the books on it, ensuring they stay in order.
- Research
- When designing Toke, it was crucial to select the right material for the sphere at its center. We debated extensively between beech, hornbeam, or walnut. Because exotic woods are generally expensive, we settled on linden, which was readily available locally. Its soft texture made it easy to work with and polish.
For the metal, we strived to select dimensions and thicknesses that could be easily machined on cnc and bending machines. We then engaged local craftsmanship and assembled the parts using welding.
We tried to evaluate different color options for the metal part. We chose both electrostatic paint and gold and silver plating as alternative methods. - Inspiration
- Toke's story is built on the theme of "Balance point and the flow of knowledge." Toke acts as a bridge, holding, displaying, and elegantly balancing precious information (books). The wooden sphere, the central element of the design, forms the weight and focal point of the entire system, creating an illusion of gravity by balancing the books' position. This reflects the idea that knowledge is a central force that keeps our minds and lives in balance.
