About Ripples of Time Residential Apartment
Ripples of Time is a residential interior design that merges two units into a 1056 square metre home for a multi generational family. The 13 original structural columns are clad in translucent stone, so the structure becomes an artistic feature. A freestanding audio visual unit replaces the traditional television wall and keeps the panoramic views open. A 4.7 metre marble dining table is held by a concealed steel structure, so no table legs are needed. Recycled Italian stone and an integrated smart home system are used throughout the residence.
This residential interior demonstrates how contemporary spatial design can orchestrate multiple sensory and material dimensions into a cohesive environment that serves both practical dwelling functions and contemplative aesthetic experience, drawing upon international design vocabularies while maintaining cultural sensitivity to traditions of light, material, and spatial refinement. The compositional achievement rests substantially in the sophisticated calibration of contrasts: the organic flowing curves of the custom seating arrangements providing soft yielding forms against the precise rectilinear discipline of the architectural envelope, the warm amber luminosity of the translucent columns and their geometric patterning creating intimate human-scale warmth against the vast cool atmospheric depth of the metropolitan panorama beyond, the deliberate restraint of the interior chromatic palette allowing subtle variations in texture and tone to register with heightened sensitivity, and the interplay between zones of brightness and shadow creating spatial rhythm and visual interest across ceiling and floor planes. The three vertical illuminated columns function simultaneously as practical spatial dividers that define conversation zones within the open plan, as sculptural light features that contribute ambient illumination, and as compositional anchors that establish measured intervals lending classical proportion to contemporary openness. Particular accomplishment appears in the ceiling-mounted fixtures whose perforated or layered construction projects intricate organic patterns across the smooth pale ceiling surface, these shadows suggesting natural phenomena such as light filtering through forest canopy or rippling water reflections cast upon stone, bringing biophilic design principles into the cosmopolitan context through poetic light manipulation rather than literal natural elements. The designer's material selections demonstrate refined understanding of how surface qualities affect spatial atmosphere: the polished stone flooring with its delicate gray veining provides luminous reflectivity and cool visual temperature grounding the composition, the matte upholstery offers tactile softness and sound absorption crucial for residential comfort, the translucent column material transforms electric light into warm glowing presence, and the expansive unobstructed glazing dissolves the boundary between interior sanctuary and urban context without compromising the sense of protective enclosure. The furniture arrangement suggests careful study of circulation and social interaction patterns, with the generous curved sectional oriented toward both the view and the space itself, creating multiple seating positions for solitary contemplation or gathered conversation, while the nested coffee tables of varying heights and the singular lounge chair provide functional and visual variety. What emerges is a residential environment that honors the human need for both connection to broader context, achieved through the dramatic urban vista, and retreat into refined intimate space, achieved through the carefully modulated interior atmosphere, inviting consideration of how contemporary dwelling can balance openness and enclosure, stimulation and tranquility, material luxury and aesthetic restraint, ultimately creating spaces that support the full spectrum of domestic life from social gathering to solitary reflection.

- Unique Properties
- This project merges two units into a residence for a multi generational family. Its unique features include aestheticizing the original building columns with translucent stone, blurring the line between structure and art. The design also replaces the traditional TV wall with a freestanding AV unit to maximize panoramic views. A comprehensive smart home system was integrated from inception, alongside the use of recycled Italian stone for a sustainable and technologically advanced home.

- Production Technology
- The design methodology transforms the original structure into an artistic flow. Key features include the living room's TV wall free design and an intricate CNC carved marble screen at the entrance. The project utilizes diverse materials, from translucent stone on columns to a 470kg raw stone sink in the bathroom. The 4.7 meter suspended marble table, which uses an invisible steel structure to eliminate table legs and create a sleek, modern aesthetic.
- Design Challenge
- A key challenge was transforming the building's 13 structural columns from obstacles into artistic features. The design required solving complex engineering problems, such as securely suspending a 4.7 meter marble table and a 470kg stone sink. Balancing the demands of grand entertaining with the intimacy needed for multi generational living was also crucial. Finally, integrating a sophisticated smart home system seamlessly from the initial design phase presented a unique technical and creative hurdle.
- Project Duration
- The project finished in August 2024 in Taiwan.
- Operation Flow
- The design is highly interactive and user focused. The smart home system allows residents to control the entire environment via voice or smartphone for different scenarios. Spatial fluidity is key, with non directional sofas and a circular flow in the bedrooms encouraging social interaction. The custom designed dining tables are not only visually striking but also highly practical, with a leg free design that ensures comfort and facilitates large scale entertainment. The tea room's motorized lift table provides functional flexibility.
- Research
- This project involved significant engineering innovation. To support the 4.7 meter dining table, a complex steel frame with over 700 components was engineered and concealed within the bar counter. The 470kg stone sink also required a custom steel support system for safe suspension. Additionally, the smart home system was integrated from the start, extending to advanced humidity and air pressure controls, ensuring optimal air quality and a seamless user experience.
- Inspiration
- The design draws inspiration from the building's original architectural structure, transforming its 13 structural columns and symmetrical layout into a rhythmic, artistic statement. A key motive was to seamlessly integrate the natural landscape, using views of the Taichung skyline and Central Mountain Range as a core design element to harmonize with nature, art, and function.
