About The Cross Coffee Shop

The Cross is a coffee shop and cultural venue set in a basement in Taiwan. The design turns a dim area with limited natural light into a lively gathering place of 1200 square meters. Full color LED media walls span the interior surfaces and support interactive visual experiences. The bar counter is made of glass bricks with programmable LED lighting. Stainless steel and mirrored cladding reduce the visual weight of structural beams and columns. The open plan layout and flexible zoning host exhibitions, live music and community events.

Arthur Li's spatial intervention within the café typology emerges from contemporary retail design discourse that privileges multisensory brand experience and environmental storytelling over purely transactional service models, positioning the coffee shop as an immersive destination where illumination, color saturation, and spatial choreography collaborate to construct memorable place identity and differentiated market positioning within increasingly competitive hospitality sectors. The compositional achievement demonstrates sophisticated understanding of environmental psychology and the affective potential of atmospheric design, deploying cool-spectrum saturation as a bold departure from conventional café environments traditionally anchored in warm earth tones, natural materials, and soft ambient lighting, instead proposing that the energizing stimulation of saturated artificial color and dynamic linear light installations can activate social behaviors, extend dwell time, and establish distinctive brand recognition. The chromatic strategy reveals particular accomplishment in the calculated deployment of complementary temperature relationships, where the pervasive cool ultramarine and violet ambient wash establishes technological contemporaneity and nocturnal sophistication while strategic insertions of warm coral and terracotta upholstery prevent chromatic coldness and maintain human-scaled intimacy, demonstrating nuanced color theory application that balances atmospheric drama with functional hospitality. The linear ceiling lighting installations transcend mere functional illumination to operate as kinetic sculptural elements that structure spatial perception, guide circulation, and create Instagram-worthy visual moments that extend brand presence into social media channels and digital culture, acknowledging how contemporary retail environments must perform simultaneously for physical inhabitants and photographic documentation. Technical facility appears throughout the material palette selection and detailing resolution, where industrial elements including exposed ductwork, structural systems, and utilitarian finishes establish authenticity and urban edge while plush upholstered forms and textile softness prevent austerity, achieving that delicate equilibrium between designed sophistication and approachable comfort essential to successful café environments. The spatial organization demonstrates considered human factors thinking, with varied seating typologies accommodating diverse use patterns from intimate dyad conversation at small tables to larger social clusters to individual laptop users, while the layered spatial recession from foreground lounge seating through middleground café tables to background service counter creates intuitive circulation logic and behavioral zoning. The illuminated signage typography participates in contemporary sans-serif minimalism that communicates clarity, modernity, and international design currency, while the "CROSS+CAFÉ" nomenclature suggests thematic layering around intersection, convergence, and hybrid experience potentially worth contemplating. This spatial intervention invites consideration of how retail environments increasingly function as theatrical sets for self-presentation and social performance, how artificial lighting and saturated color can construct emotional atmosphere and brand personality, how material contrasts between industrial and luxurious generate visual interest and tactile variety, and ultimately how café design evolves to meet changing cultural expectations around third places, work-leisure boundaries, and experience-driven consumption within urban contemporary life.

Unique Properties
This project is a hybrid cultural venue that blends cafe operations with multimedia, cultural, and artistic elements. It stands out with its integration of interactive led media walls, exposed ceiling finishes, and a bar counter made of glass bricks with programmable LED lighting. The space encourages community engagement and serves as a dynamic gathering point for exhibitions, live music, and AI-related content.
Dimensions & Packaging
The space covers an area of 1200 square meters. The design incorporates a range of materials, including tiles, marble, aluminum grilles, stainless steel, artificial stone, stained oak veneer, mirrors, and glass bricks. The full-color Led media walls span across the interior surfaces, with ceiling finishes combining exposed sprayed finishes and diamond-shaped colored light strips.

Production Technology
The design utilized advanced materials such as led media walls and glass bricks for the bar counter. The led walls were employed to create a dynamic multimedia environment, while glass bricks were chosen for their versatility in the bar counter. Stainless steel cladding was used to reduce the visual heaviness of structural beams and columns. These materials were selected for their aesthetic value and their ability to meet the project's technological and structural demands.
Design Challenge
The greatest challenge was the transformation of a dim, underutilized basement space into a vibrant, multi-functional cultural hub. The design had to address the lack of natural light while preserving the building's structural integrity. External factors, such as existing piping systems and large structural beams, required innovative design solutions, like using stainless steel and mirrored cladding to enhance spatial perception.
Project Duration
The project started in October 2024 and finished in August 2025 in Taiwan, China.
Operation Flow
The space is designed for flexible zoning and multi-functional use. The LED media walls allow for interactive visual experiences, while the open-plan layout facilitates a seamless flow between various activities. The bar counter, with its programmable LED lighting, serves as a focal point, creating a dynamic space for social interaction, exhibitions, and performances.
Research
This project focused on transforming a dim basement into a vibrant cultural venue using multimedia elements like LED walls. The research aimed to enhance the space's visual impact and community engagement. Design trials and expert consultations were conducted, leading to a successful integration of technology, which revitalized the space and fostered a dynamic cultural atmosphere.
Inspiration
The inspiration stemmed from the challenge of transforming a basement with limited natural light into a lively cultural space. The concept focused on creating an immersive environment through interactive led media walls and dynamic lighting, effectively bringing the space to life with technology and vibrant visual energy.
