About Between Force And Stillness Tennis Inspired Sculpture
Between Force and Stillness is a public sculpture created for a national tennis center in Beijing, China. The work interprets a tennis form through 24 sphere shaped units arranged along a vertical axis, evoking natural rhythm and cyclical time. The composition draws on Daoist thought, in which movement and stillness are understood as mutually dependent. Mixed media are used, including fiberglass, marble, weather resistant automotive paint and lighting. Modular construction allows separate shipping and assembly on site.
Yuan Zhuang's Between Force And Stillness Tennis Inspired Sculpture engages the rich tradition of found object transformation and material elevation that extends from early twentieth-century readymade investigations through contemporary sculpture's ongoing dialogue with everyday objects, athletic culture, and the poetics of arrested motion. The work demonstrates considerable compositional intelligence in its spiraling vertical arrangement, where seven tennis balls ascend in helical formation interwoven with dark weathered metal bands, the entire assemblage rising from a luminous marble plinth that provides both physical foundation and conceptual grounding. The chromatic achievement centers on the brilliant acid yellow-green of the tennis balls, their vibrant hue creating striking visual impact against the neutral white marble and dark oxidized bronze or metal bands, while warm golden afternoon light models the spherical forms and creates dramatic tonal contrasts that enhance the three-dimensional presence and sculptural weight of the composition. The technical facility evident in the precise engineering required to achieve this gravity-defying vertical thrust while maintaining structural integrity demonstrates sophisticated understanding of balance, weight distribution, and material properties, the precarious stacking creating productive visual tension between stability and potential collapse that activates viewer engagement and sustains prolonged looking. The work invites contemplation of sport's explosive kinetic energy transformed into sculptural permanence, the tennis ball's actual flight trajectory frozen and elevated into aesthetic monument, suggesting broader investigations of how ordinary objects carry cultural significance and emotional resonance that can be amplified and reframed through artistic intervention. The juxtaposition of humble sports equipment with noble sculptural materials including the fine-grained marble base and the substantially weathered metal bands creates productive dialogues about hierarchy, value, commemoration, and the transformation of the ephemeral moment into enduring form. The spiral composition itself carries rich symbolic freight, evoking ascension, growth, evolution, and the continuous upward striving that characterizes both athletic achievement and human aspiration more broadly, while the alternating rhythm of spherical and geometric elements creates formal counterpoint and textural variety that rewards close examination. One might observe how the work negotiates the threshold between movement and stillness, capturing the precise instant where kinetic energy meets structural repose, inviting viewers to consider their own experiences of athletic endeavor, competitive striving, recreational play, and the moments of suspended animation that punctuate dynamic action, while the environmental setting on manicured lawn with soft atmospheric background suggests both the tennis court context and the elevated gallery or garden installation space, positioning the work at the intersection of sport and art, recreation and contemplation, popular culture and high aesthetic discourse.

- Production Technology
- Mixed media including marble fiberglass and weather resistant metal automotive paint suitable for outdoor use.
- Design Challenge
- The key challenge was translating abstract Daoist concepts into a public art form that could be intuitively understood within a fast paced sports environment. The project needed to balance expressive form with structural safety weather resistance and efficient installation while remaining clear and engaging for diverse international audiences.
- Project Duration
- Core Area of Beijing Olympic Park, China
- Operation Flow
- Visitors experience the sculpture through movement and pause as they approach walk around and observe it from multiple distances. The work guides emotional rhythm within the space rather than requiring direct interaction.
- Research
- The project investigates site oriented public art within a national level sports venue during an international tennis event. Through site observation pedestrian flow analysis and material testing it explores how public art can support spatial identification cultural communication and emotional guidance for large scale audiences. Drawing from Daoist philosophy the study translates the balance of movement and stillness into a modular sculptural system suitable for long term public display.
- Inspiration
- The inspiration for “FORCE AND STILLNESS” comes from the Dao De Jing, which sees movement and stillness as mutually dependent forces. Movement conveys change and energy, while stillness offers balance and calm, and their harmony reflects the order of nature. The 24 spheres symbolize natural rhythm and cyclical time. Through a static tennis form, the work expresses this motion, quiet dialectic and connects the dynamic spirit of a tennis event with China’s enduring cultural heritage.
