About Glacier C Ceiling Lamp

Glacier C is a ceiling lamp designed for contemporary living spaces. The lamp body is made of natural quartz crystal, finely polished to keep the raw texture of the stone. An internal aluminium alloy frame supports the crystal, while a custom diffusing structure and LED modules spread soft and even light. The cutting angles recall the layered forms of glacial ice. Concealed wiring and embedded fittings give the lamp a floating appearance. A smart dimming system allows preset lighting scenes through a remote control or a mobile application. Two lengths are available, 1000 mm and 1200 mm.

Chen Wang's Glacier C Ceiling Lamp engages contemporary lighting design's ongoing exploration of materiality, texture, and the transformation of functional objects into sculptural presences that enhance spatial experience while fulfilling practical illumination requirements, positioning itself within broader conversations about biophilic design principles that bring natural forms, organic textures, and elemental references into built environments. The work demonstrates considerable compositional sophistication through its tripartite arrangement of overlapping illuminated elements that create dynamic spatial rhythm while maintaining overall balance, each bar positioned at subtly different angles and depths to generate visual movement and dimensional complexity within what might otherwise present as simple horizontal repetition, this careful orchestration of position, length, and overlap revealing the designer's sensitivity to proportional relationships and spatial choreography. The chromatic achievement proves particularly noteworthy in its restriction to a warm amber palette that reads as honey, aged cognac, or mineral-rich water catching sunlight, this thermal warmth contrasted against deep atmospheric darkness to create maximum luminous impact while maintaining tonal unity across the three elements, the color selection evoking natural phenomena including glacial ice backlit by golden hour sun, crystallized amber preserving ancient light, or mineral formations in limestone caves catching torch glow. The surface treatment represents perhaps the work's most distinctive formal accomplishment, where each illuminated bar appears thoroughly encrusted with irregular granular texture suggesting frost crystals, salt deposits, or barnacle accumulation, this heavily textured epidermis creating optical complexity as light interacts with countless micro-facets to produce varied reflection, refraction, and diffusion effects that prevent the surface from reading as flat or uniform despite the overall glow, instead presenting as richly tactile and optically active across every millimeter. The slender vertical suspension cables provide essential compositional counterpoint to the dominant horizontal elements while demonstrating structural honesty, these fine dark lines acknowledging the physical reality of gravity and support while achieving such delicacy that they read as minimal visual interruption, the transparency of the suspension system allowing the illuminated forms to appear almost weightlessly hovering within their atmospheric void. The relationship between the luminous sculptural elements and the substantial wooden base element in the lower frame suggests thoughtful consideration of installation context, where the warm-toned hardwood surface grounds the ethereal floating forms while establishing human scale reference and suggesting the domestic or hospitality environments where such lighting might create intimate atmosphere, the clean geometry and reflective finish of the base providing rational counterpoint to the organic textural expression above. The work participates in lighting design traditions that treat illumination as sculptural medium rather than mere functional necessity, recalling pioneering efforts to create luminous objects that reward contemplation as visual art while serving spatial needs, this dual functionality characteristic of design excellence that refuses the false binary between aesthetic achievement and practical utility. The textural vocabulary suggesting crystallization, mineral formation, or organic accumulation invites consideration of natural processes, geological time, and elemental materials, bringing these associations into inhabited space through designed object that references ice, stone, coral, or salt while transforming these typically cold or neutral materials into sources of warmth and welcoming glow, this material paradox creating conceptual richness beyond pure formal achievement. What questions might this work invite about our relationships with natural phenomena, our desire to domesticate elemental forces, our capacity to find beauty in frozen moments, our need for warmth and light in darkness, and the ways designed objects can simultaneously serve practical needs while enriching sensory and emotional experience of the spaces we inhabit?

Unique Properties
This smart ceiling lamp uses natural quartz crystal as the main material for the lamp body. By simulating the interlocking forms and light-transmitting properties of polar ice crystals, it creates rich layers of light and shadow. The levitating installation and minimalist wiring design ensure visual purity and lightness. The smart dimming system is seamlessly integrated, making this lamp both a levitating sculpture of light and shadow and an intelligent companion for daily life.
Dimensions & Packaging
The product comes in two sizes: 1000mm x 80mm x 80mm and 1200mm x 80mm x 80mm.

Production Technology
The lamp body is crafted from natural crystal rough stones, selected for quality and finely polished to preserve the natural form and raw texture of the material. An internal aluminum alloy framework ensures stable load-bearing capacity. Light passes through a custom diffusing structure and smart LED modules, delivering uniform and soft illumination. A simplified wiring system, combined with dedicated embedded components, creates a pristine visual effect as if floating in space.
Design Challenge
The core challenge lay in how to imbue the hard, cold crystal with the fluidity of glaciers and a rich interplay of light and shadow. We overcame this through precise experimentation with crystal cutting angles and a multi-layer diffusion structure. Achieving the highly accurate embedded installation required for the floating effect was equally complex; by developing modular embedded components and a tolerance adjustment mechanism, we ultimately ensured the design vision was flawlessly realized.
Project Duration
Designed in Shanghai in December 2024, completed in July 2025.
Operation Flow
The included smart remote allows you to turn on the light with a simple press, initiating a soft, glacier like fade in illumination. Through the dedicated smart app, you can preset lighting scenes for activities like reading or relaxing, or sync the brightness with the natural daylight cycle. The core of its interaction lies in making light adjustment as intuitive as breathing, with technology subtly receding behind its natural texture.
Research
This study focuses on integrating the form and luminous quality of glaciers into modern home lighting. Using natural crystal glass and multi-layer optics,it addresses the issues of harsh lighting and lack of decorative appeal found in traditional lamps. With minimalist wiring and smart dimming, it delivers a soft, adaptive light source while achieving visual purity. The result is an integrated lighting solution blending natural beauty, emotional ambiance, and smart convenience.
Inspiration
The design of this pendant lamp is inspired by crystal formation. Drawing inspiration from the crystalline structures of glaciers and their visual effect on light refraction, we seek to merge the unique luminosity of natural crystal with modern smart home technology. The material qualities of natural raw crystal resonate with glacial imagery, and its layered interplay of light and shadow offers a lighting solution that brings both natural artistry and minimalist aesthetics to contemporary living spaces.
